  1. Next time let’s. Hit reply instead of quote, shall we? Once is too much already.

  2. i really wanted to add something pithy, but all those pictures of cipollini have rendered me confused and angry like an old man trying to return soup at a deli

  3. Maybe Andy Schleck should focus on the riding.

Proving that the rule about the colour of shorts is entirely valid.

  4. Are we not doing a Paris-Nice VSP??

I see the Schleckii twins are doing that

Finally we’re getting back to Eurosport TV sensory overload and marital strain levels of bike racing coverage again, at long last

Yes we are! It will be going up later today. Thanks!

Back to arguing over what has priority on the sky+ box; Come Dine With Me, East Enders, anything cycling related, Pony Club or Pair of Kings. To be fair the kids don’t argue about it too much, not because they don’t care but because the bulk of deletion goes on after their bedtime.

  8. @Chris
sounds like there is no argument to be had there

    @frank
is someone going to let Ron know? He seems to be viewing the site at the moment, but maybe a quick phone call to him might avoid recurrent bitter disappointment come the end of the Day 1 TT??

  9. @Dr C
I’m sure that if we shared a sky+ box it wouldn’t be an argument but Mrs Chris doesn’t really get anything that doesn’t require contestants to be voted off either by a panel of judges or the public. I suppose that could be why she did rather enjoy the elimination Women’s Omnium Elimination race from the recent track racing from the Olympic Velodrome.

I have had “photochromic” radar paths since 2009. Awesome!! Dark enough for Southern California on the brightest day, light enough that I never use anything else! Not prescription though but I don’t see why they should be different.

I picked up some Oakley Flack Jacket XLJ for this season. Have opted for the photochromatic lenses so I don’t have to carry another “clear” pair in my back pocket. Right now the dark seems dark enough, and the clear end looks good for the shady stretchs of the road. Mine are Rx and I had them made by SportRx (ads in all the bike magazines) we have used them for a couple years now and their service has been exceptional.

Which photochromatics do you have? Very temped to get some myself – in Seattle we have lots of light variation and I find myself taking them on and off. I notice Oakley has two brands – the transitions and some unbranded ones – and have long wondered which are better.

  13. @frank

Not that you asked me but I have the regular non transition ones. Before that I had some Tifosi ones which were much cheaper but broke when I cleaning them with a little too much rigour.

Both work very well and very quickley. Other than that if you wanted to not use photochromatics I have found that the Oakely persimmon lens is one of the best all round lenses for going from light to dark conditions, for skiing anyways. Never used them for cycling but I would think it’s the same.

ps my oaks are hydrothingymagig…works very well also….sweat beads and flows off.

Atala is a classic no doubt, in the same way as Castorama and Carrera.

I like all three of them! Yeah, I know, I’m crazy & I definitely have an unusual fashion sense, but I like all three of those. Castorama’s faux hogwasher bibs – Classic!

  15. Oh, and I thought about this while out riding in the rain today. What saddle is Gilbert riding this year? I know he’s ridden the Sella Italia Flite Team in recent years.

  16. @Ron
“faux hogwasher” — Love it, you sound like a New Yorker displaced to the South!

Would you say the Oakley photochromatics get light enough to use at night?

I always wear sunglasses while riding, even in cloudy/rainy conditions, as my sunglass lenses are light enough that I can see in those conditions, but dark enough to take the the edge off of really bright sunlight.

When I was thinking about getting transitions lenses, I was thinking about the ones you usually see people have on their normal glasses, as those will go from totally transparent to standard “sunglasses” dark. Only I’d be mounting them in nice sunglasses frames.

I guess I should really go into an Oakley store and ask them all these questions. I have a Flex account that I put extra into this year specifically for new riding glasses.

  18. @mcsqueak

Hmmmm…I shall experiment forthwith and get back to you. I never ride in the dark. In Los Angeles drivers turn in to mental crazy persons at about 4pm…best to get off the road. I am working nights these next three nights. I don’t have my Oakleys with me right now but tomorrow night I shall begin my experiment!!

  19. @ dr squeekers

I would say that..hmmmm..in fading light or a well lit area you might get away with the Ok photos. Maybe. But not in full on dark. And they would be off my eyes and in the vents well before that if it was me. So i guess I’m saying no. I wouldn’t want to risk it.

Based on the website link in the most recent article I’d say it’s a Fizik Kurve

  21. @frank
After a bit of searching, I was able to track down the non-photoshopped version of your infamous Cipo photo.
Though he’s Rule #33 compliant, He is sporting a fairly impressive set of wookie shorts.

  22. I’m resurrecting this thread because there seemed to be a lot of questions and interest regarding optical solutions/alternatives for cyclists. I was in exile during this time so I couldn’t respond…

In any case, I will be at the 37th Annual Rhode Island Bike Show on Saturday from 9 to 2 answering people’s questions about just those things. If you are in the area, stop by, met me in person, and see why I am so awesome. Bring me your prescription so I can better help you, as well!
