    Speaking of pimps – I got my new Jawbones today and what with the matching S-Works and Podium shoes… Well, I may not go too fast but I look marvelous doing it.

    Everything was all in line and you looked Fantastic, but those shades you had were awful. Overjoyed you’ve pulled it together to get the Jawbones. Did you end up going prescription?

    @Cyclopsbut surely you only wear The V-Kit, no? Whoops, forgot the state champs jersey.

    Actually, we are not allowed to wear The V kit in USAC sanctioned races, are we? Only USAC recognized and registered teams can wear team kits. I have just been wearing my generic cycling outfits in my races so far this year.

    I’ve been thinking about registering as a team, but haven’t made it on my priority list as of yet. If you need something done in order to wear the V-Kit (and you actually want to race in it) let me know and I’ll kick it up the list. I’m planning on racing in mine this year as well.

    My eyes are so bad that Oakley can’t make Rx to fir me so I’m going with contacts.

    I’m the same way. Now how the hell am I supposed to spend all those flex dollars?

  5. @The Oracle @Cyclops

    Ha, I’m lucky my eyes aren’t so bad yet that I can’t get Rx sunnies, as I despise putting in contacts.

    I am determined to get new shades this year before summer rolls around, as my current ones let in too much air, and aren’t really bike specific. Riddle me this: would it be stupid to have sunglasses with transitions lenses?

    The thing I hate about needing eyeglasses is that summer rides after work can often run past dusk. I then have to remove my sunglasses to see, but now everything more than 10 feet from me is blurry. And I’m certainly not going to carry around another pair of glasses.

    Transition lenses would allow me to continue to wear my sunglasses past dusk with no problems. You normally only see those on regular glasses, however. I’ve never seen someone with a pair of sports sunglasses that transition.

  6. @Cyclops
    Great action shot! But what’s up with the doo-rag on under the helmet? Should be a cycling cap man!

    Myself as well. Trust me, the irony of being an eye surgeon who is fellowship trained in cornea and refractive surgery not being able to have refractive surgery (too large a prescritpion with too thin of corneas) is not lost on me.

    Contacts and oakleys for me as well.

    I would wear my V-kit in a second if it was legal in races, without a doubt. Hell, they V kits I have are by far the nicest and best kits I own. Maybe I am paranoid but the regs say that you cannot wear any kit from a team unless it is officially registered with the USAC. Not sure what the process is or if it costs money (probably) but if it was an easy process and free, I would encourage you to do it. But I imagine that’s all you need, a little more work on the whole Velominati side of your life!

  9. @Buck Rogers
    Yep. that’s definitely ironic. And it sucks, to boot.

    Actually, I can see okay without glasses, and I don’t use contacts. However, I have a huge contrast between how well my left and right eyes see. One of the lenses in my glasses is very “coke bottle,” while the other has hardly any curvature. My understanding is that this difference is the reason why I can’t get prescription sunglasses (for reasons that I’m not really smart enough to grasp). Actually, I wouldn’t even need them for the daytime; it’s when I put in the clear lenses at night (I do a fair amount of riding after dark) that I could use the extra depth perception and lower fatigue that prescription lenses provide.

    @mcsqueak
    Methinks that most sport sunglasses give you a transitions option. Oakley calls them “Photochromic.” It looks like you can get them with prescriptions, as well.

  10. @The Oracle
    Oracle -I have the exact same problem. My Dad is an Optometrist and I have tried everything and the best so far has been contacts and clear lenses for night time riding. I did get him to grind some lenses to try in my Jawbones and after 20 minutes of riding I pulled over, threw up, then pitched the lenses into the ditch…it was horrible. The curve of the lense combined with my Mr. Magoo prescription was like riding with fish eye lens over one eye and a telescope on the other. Maybe time to kick it like Fignon?

  11. @Buck Rogers
    If the Velominati don’t contend to be a “team” but just a community of people who like riding road bikes a lot and argue amongst themselves you’re not violating their regs.

  12. @The Oracle

    Cool, thanks for the link. My crap HMO has an in-house vision center, which does carry Oakley glasses but they never have the nice sunglasses on display. I’ll have to ask them what they can do in that case. My current sunglasses are Raybans with Oakley lenses, and I like the optics a lot.

  13. @Cyclops
    Yes, an old-timey prison. He had a cape, a top-hat and a handlebar moustachio, and was last seen being pursued by the keystone cops accompanied by a silent movie score.

  14. @Tobin

    I wish I could drop the V like the Professor. Unfortunately, I’ve got a long ways to go before I’ve got the guns to back up that look.

    @mcsqueak
    No problemo. I happened across that last year when I was researching for my Jawbones (once again hoping in vain that I could get the clear lens in my prescription). Your HMO shop may not stock the frames and lenses you want, but I’d bet that they could order them up for you.

  15. Freuler knew how to rock him those stripes. Doesn’t look as prisony when you’re layin’ down some massive V and rollin that kind of Casually Deliberate.

    [dmalbum: path=”/velominati.com/wp-content/uploads/readers/frank/2012.02.29.22.21.41/”/]

  16. @frank
    Freuler could lay down the V, without doubt. But I’m sorry, that kit was fugly, and I don’t see how you can deny that he looks like an old-time prisoner escaping from the law in those photos, especially the third and fourth ones.

    @Tobin
    That. Is. Uncanny.

  17. @frank
    Is that really Urs in @Tobin’s pic? There is only the slightest hint of a moustache on that guy.

    A black hole would have spontaneously formed if Urs was wearing the Atala stripes in this photo:

    More discussion here.

    Is that really Urs in @Tobin’s pic? There is only the slightest hint of a moustache on that guy.

    No – that’s not Freuler as far as I can tell. That’s just some dude. Freuler is the only one I could pick out of a lineup on that team.

  19. @Nate

    @Tobin
    Wow, that Atala kit is horrendous. Looks like prison stripes.

    Hush yo mouth! That Alata kit is one of the greatest kits ever. Super cool, super distinctive and when worn by the greatest ‘tash-sporting style icon Urs Freuler, simply irreproachable.

    Let’s face it, most kits are fugly or simply forgettable. T\For classic kits the 70s had the Peugeot checkerboard and Renault, the 70’s/80s had Raleigh, the 80s had Alata, Sem/Skil/Mavic and La Vie Claire, the 80s/90s had RMO.

    What other kits are classics?

    It’s well known that Tom Selleck was green with envy of the Mighty Urs.

    Hey Frank, when you gonna run the piece on Urs and let everyone know what a stud he was?

  20. Too much black and white in the amateur peloton now.

    Yeah. I agree!

    If you can’y decide black or white bar tape, this dude has it covered!

    Nah, it’s not Urs. 1) no mustache, 2) bike’s too small. Urs rode huge frames. Like, Frank big.

    Whew. Re-read the post there Sthilzy. Thought that was a pic of your good self. There’s only one human on the planet who can get away with looking like that, and that Dude is not him. I mean, that’s the most offensive pic hat’s been posted here in a long time.

    By the way, I hope he doesn’t live in WI as he’ll not be joining one of the WI cogals dressed like that.

    See, the guy pointing at Laurent is saying, “see that Castorama kit with its pinstripes. It’s pure shite. The only real striped kit was the Atala one that Urs used to wear.

    I have to say this, but in that pic LF looks like a scared wee boy while UF looks like the man.

  24. @Nate

    @wiscot
    Atala is a classic no doubt, in the same way as Castorama and Carrera.

    Easy now! Which Carrera are we talking about? The Roche Carrera or the “denim” Carrera of Pantani?

    With you being a proud wearer of an apron, I thought you’d like the Castorama? No?

    The denim Carerra of course.

    I wear my apron when I am maintaining my steed, or gluing up tubulars, and have the good sense and taste to remove it before throwing a leg over.

    WAAYYYY too much going on there. All the stripes fighting the lines on the garage door in the background, gloves, HB tape. I had to take some anti seizure we had laying around here in the OR.
    But hey, at least he looks like he thinks he looks good. Happy.

  27. That is a Mario fan right there – puts us all to shame. Holy shit. The bike, wheels, grouppo, kit, overshoes…the only things he got wrong are the helmet and the shades.

    All told, though, this one is probably bordering on not enough going on. I’m glad the guy knew where to draw the line, as far as we know.

    Thank you. I saw someone in Italy with that full kit and I have searched high and low for one. It fucking rules. Those Urs photos are great, what a stud. He and his ‘stash did that kit proud.

  29. @sthilzy
    Unless he’s got 4 or 5 pieces of each of those kit options (perhaps not gloves & shoe covers) then he’s doing a bucket load of washing to make sure he’s matching that god awful paint scheme each ride, because it’s obvious that this dude has even more matching OCD than @Frank.

    @ALL STOP FUCKING QUOTING THE ORIGINAL POST! Seeing that photo once is bad enough, and yes the shouting was necessary.

    Oi Squeeky, I have had “photochromic” radar paths since 2009. Awesome!! Dark enough for Southern California on the brightest day, light enough that I never use anything else! Not prescription though but I don’t see why they should be different. Lot of mullah$$ though.. I got mine (which were $215) for $100 when I bought my bike from the LBS. After much haggling and having done the deal, almost, I said “chuck in those Oakleys for $100 and we’re done ” and he did and we were.
