Velominati Super Prestige: Gent – Wevelgem 2016

Deinze – Wevelgem really but Gent sounds correct, like Het Volk. Last year’s windy wet edition was a pretty awesome race except Luca Paolini won it wearing tights (FFS!?) and maybe high on Italian marching powder. Riders were leaning into the wind and being blown off the road. It was awesome to watch maybe not so awesome to race.

Tony Martin will be lining up as he prepares for a Spring Classics campaign. If you have Ronde van Vlaanderen dreams you best ride this and see how the gun prep has gone. Tomeke, Faboo, it should be a proper battle.

Here is the start list and it is impressive. Let us hope the Belgian weather is true to form. The prize list is equally impressive and after that weird Milan-Sanremo finish, no VSP savants are crushing it yet. So do some stretches, limber up, if you need to unload some bad choices (H. Haussler), get those out of your system now before the real races begin.

2 things: Haussler’s a baller, no bad pick IMHO. Also, a workmate suggested Paolini’s coke may have been from a blood bag that he filled during the offie, and got sprung for after re-infusing. No place for scurrilous gossip quite like the interweb, is there

Yeah I’ve heard that guess/rumour as well, but lets be honest, the test was the morning after J-Rod won up the Muur de Huy. My guess is simply that they celebrated…

  8. The Norwegian looked good early in the year, but has been pretty quiet since. Reckon he’ll want to get a result before the big shows. Stumping for the back ups for the remaining positions as the big dogs look to keep the powder dry for next month

  11. Either Pat’s bollocking will work for EQS, or I’ve fucked up badly. Sorely tempted to change picks based on E3, but feel that would be unpure.

  12. No way Pistoff is going to survive Kemmel in rain and wind with this kind of form. I’m going with the Strongmen. It certainly won’t be Cocolini this year. Too bad there are only V picks, that’s a heck of a start list!

If you’re watching the race on television: if you see an idiot in a YJA stopping traffic while shivering heavily with a grim smile on the face in the rainy and windy descent of the Kemmelberg, that’s me, spare me a thought.

    VSP PICKS:

    1. Debusschere
    2. Vanmarcke
    3. Sagan
    4. Stannard
    5. Terpstra
  13. 20 knot SSW wind, 11deg, sunshine and 30% chance of showers. Looking like another breezy edition, cross/headwind start, echelons fracturing the bunch as it heads away from the coast plus a 30% chance of greasy pave. The race could be in bits before they even make it to the bergs. The tailwind finish is a wee light at the end of the 240km

    tunnel of pain.

  21. I can’t help but think that the World Champion is out front animating races this early season in a way that he expects will have him better prepared for P-R. It is one bad mo-fo that can attack t/o, drive winning selections and breaks, gap up and pull folks along, and race largely void of team mates, and podium a pile of 2nds.

Contrast his racing now with his race in Richmond.

He’s just getting warmed up. Having fun. With a little bit of good fortune on his side, he will win P-R. He is a crafty racer.

I’m also sure everyone has noted his well maintained guns. No surprise there.

I was thinking sprinters for tomorrow. Windy though could leave some folks caught out. Hmmm…

  22. VSP PICKS:

    1. Jens Debusschere
    2. Peter Sagan
    3. Greg van Avermaet

I would love a P-R win from him.

I am always astounded by the lack of support that Sagan has from his team. Where’s the squad, in stealth mode? All through last summer it was, “Go get results. No, the team’s riding for Contador.” Even at the World’s he was largely a man alone (though for different reasons.)

The guy can definitely land some second place finishes, but I also feel like he experiences this, “What about a win? What about a win? What about a win?” hectoring that other riders don’t get.

  24. Quick change up

    VSP PICKS:

    1. Alexander Kristoff

CyclingNews reports that Bouhanni will ride Gent-Wevelgem.

I’m not overly fond of M. Bouhanni, personally. What’s the general view of him among the Velominati?

Not that I count myself as Velominati per se. I, however, find him to be a particularly irritating little twunt.

  26. G-W Picks – thinking it will end in a sprint…

    VSP PICKS:

    1. Viviani
    2. Sagan
    3. Demare
    4. Benoot
    5. Gaviria
  27. Sprint. Sags saving it for P-R. Fabs too. All those guys will leave it to the sprinters for this one. You can’t get a car up the Kemmelberg with the peloton, so Demare could be fucked.

And I gotta put Heiny in at least once, even though he’ll never win anything ever again.

    VSP PICKS:

    1. Kris Pistoffagen
    2. Che
    3. Nacer Spades
    4. Give us a Lift
    5. Heiny
  28. Updated picks, dropping Van Avermaet and picking Boonen in his stead.

    VSP PICKS:

    1. Peter Sagan
    2. Tom Boonen
    3. Tiesj Benoot
    4. Zdenek Stybar
    5. Edvald Boasson Hagen
  29. All change. It’s time for Bouhanni to earn his millions.

    VSP PICKS:

    1. Bouhanni
    2. Gaviria
    3. Nizzolo
    4. Kristoff
    5. Sagan
  30. It was either this 5 or a group of sprinters- with Graviria to win

    VSP PICKS:

    1. Zdenek Stybar
    2. Peter sagan
    3. Alexander Kristoff
    4. Fabian Cancellara
    5. Bosen Hagen
