Velominati Super Prestige: VVomen’s World Road Race 2016

I cannot get excited about a world championship road race on a flat course. I get it, the sprinters need their moment too, but really, the desert, where most people would not know who Beryl Burton was…correction, where nobody knows who Beryl Burton was. Yeah, yeah, they have tons of money and would like their kids to ride bikes, I still think it is a fucked place to have the worlds. And yet, the riders make the race, not the course. Think of it as a flat Dutch race with cross winds, super hot cross winds.

All you kids get off of my lawn now.

Start list is here. Good luck and good betting.

  5. It’s even more of a fucked-up place to hold a Football World Cup. On the bright side, for the cyclists, they may just have resurfaced a few roads. For the World Cup, the Qataris are employing thousands of slave laborers to build stadia that six months after the event will be rotting husks.

  6. **Yeah! What’s up with these new nations wanting some of what us historically dominant imperialist entities have had  for a couple of centuries. Don’t they know their place?

  14. Forecast of a windless weekend, to rob anything of interest- though the women were always only doing laps of The Pearl, the tourist island made even quieter by deciding not to sell alcohol there after all.

I’m all in favour of running the Worlds outside of Europe, obviously. Colombia is probably due another go- or maybe Argentina or Venezuela, to mix things up? I hope we see one in Eritrea in the 2020s, and somwehere such as Chongming Island in China, maybe Saitama in Japan? Malaysia?

But not the Gulf States. They have no passion for this. Qatar is collecting international sporting events like trinkets, but it has no interest in the actual events. As tourist ads for Doha it’s been awful, just deserted lifeless streets and people passing out due to the heat.

And that’s without delving into how awful the regime is. And that the Israeli riders will have needed special dispensation to get visas (the same would be true the other way if Israel held a championships)
