Velominati Super Prestige: Women’s World Championship Road Race 2017

The Women’s road race has to be my favorite one-day road race after Paris-Roubaix and de Ronde van Vlaanderen. Those two races are obviously on a pedestal that no mortal race could ever hope to achieve.

But what I love about those classics is also what I love about the women’s road race: unpredictability. Set over a tough course, the girls are sure to make an interesting race around Bergen – especially with powerhouse riders like Mary V and Queen Lizzy being on the comeback trail and lacking some of their usual dominance.

So start your engines, check the start list, and good luck.

van der Breggen and van Vleuten could easily win and it would be nice to see van Vleuten do the double rainbow!

Ha! I wish, although the first year there are no prizes, I’m challenging!

San Sebastian – Kwiatkowski, Dumoulin and Landa all in the wrong order.

  7. @JohnB

    A win is a win!

I was about 7 points ahead before the TDF. I think I did ok there, probably scored about the same as you. I missed SS so you’ll have come back a bit there, possibly into the lead.

I did pretty well on the Vuelta though (top 3 in the right order) so who knows now?

  8. @RobSandy

Spookily enough I got the Vuelta top 3 in order too so still on your wheel. I had hoped for better from Betancur but crash injuries saw him off. That’ll be him ballooning in weight again!

I’ve done some back-if-a-fag packet maths and I reckon I’m on about 180 points and you’re around 10 points behind. So still all to play for.

I tried to work out who is 3rd but there are a lot of contenders. Think it might be dancollins.

  14. So the entire Dutch team could win this. Maybe they will ride away team time trial style with maybe an American on their wheel? Or a Brit? Or someone no one is talking about who can slip away with the win?

    VSP PICKS:

    1. VOS!

  18. Lizzie just had an operation to get her appendix removed. That’s arguably disadvantageous, but I theorise she just wanted to shed those few appendix grammes!

Also I totally agree with @frank that women’s Worlds is one of the best races on the calendar.

  28. Great to see that the new Women’s Elite Road Race Champion adheres to Rule #13. The V is clearly with her.

Kudos to Ms. Blaak and to her teammates. The Cycling news feed reported that Van der Breggen and Van Vlueten controlled the pack to ensure a Dutch World Championship. That has to be tough for the two biggest favorites but is great teamwork.

Chapeau to the Dutch women’s team!
