We close out the 6 Days of the Giro with our sixth and final installment.A body at rest, stays at rest. A body in motion, stays in motion. Things get a bit more ambiguous when it comes to a body on a bicycle tearing down a twisty mountain descent at speed, particularly in the rain. But it is here, on the boundary between clarity and ambiguity, wher...

  1. To all WA Velominati – I know you’re out there!

What be better way to celebrate The Prophet’s birthday than riding with a bunch of like minded souls through the diversity Perth has to offer. As we near the winter solstice , this is perhaps the most Flandrian Perth can get!

Starting at the Narrows on our beloved Swan River we’ll head out to the Hills through JFNP, Mundaring Weir and the Bickley Valley, down the sweeping decent of Canning Mills, through deepest, darkest Kenwick to swing on to the Shelley loop back to the Narrows. We can then recount the days exploits at the Belgian Beer Cafe, drink a toast to Eddie and all avow to be on KT2014!

    Let’s make it happen!

As referenced in the 2012 V-Moment of the year article and ensuing discussion, it was a most Vawesome year for cycling. It’s been hypothesized here and on cycling sites with more integrity that the fantastic racing of 2012 may be, at least in part, attributed to a cleaner peloton. Unless you watched the Tour de France you’d think the da...

As a dyed-in-the-wool Northerner, my time living in the South was a mixed bag. Southerners think differently, speak differently, eat differently, and prioritize life differently than do Yankees. In many ways, I became a better person during my time in the South, learning to relax a little bit and stop chasing my tail over everything all the time...

The severity of a crash exists on two planes, the physical and psychological. The physical is the most obvious and one we busy ourselves with in the immediate vicinity of coming down. Our bodies need time to heal, our kits may need replacing or mending, and our bicycles may need repair work. For weeks and sometimes months, we may carry with us t...

  5. @Mikael Liddy @Giles It’s looking like 35 plus until this time next week. I think I’ll be doing a bit of night riding to keep at it over the next few days. »

  6. So here’s a question… When does hot weather become Rule #9 worthy? We’re looking at 5 consecutive days over 40 degrees (C) here. Right in the middle of my summer break and prime riding time. I’d love a bit of rain and snow right now! »

The days of the proper head badge, I’m afraid, are numbered. It seems it used to be that any road bike with a pedigree that was really worth riding was festooned with an artful adornment on the head tube. By that I mean something made with a bit of heft, stamped or cast of alloy and riveted front and center. More and more though we’re s...

Clouds hang heavy in the sky, plump with a rain which contemplates the opportunity to hurl itself towards the Earth below. What I have always loved about Mountain Biking is the immersion into the woods; the sense of solitude that comes in the wilderness that is lost entirely in the convenience and hustle of the cities I’ve always lived in. What I always hated about Mountain Biking is that my mountain bike never feels enough like my road bike.I was but a budding...

During the birth of The Rules, just like the Big Bang, there was a flurry of new activity, too much expanding and not enough contracting; certainly not enough thinking. 1. Ask anyone from Melbourne or Sydney about Adelaide & you’ll see them roll their eyes before laughing about our interesting use for bank vaults and quiet, deserted streets in the middle of the ‘city’. Narrow your survey field down to cyclists there & while they’ll still carry out the same actions, once they’re done you’ll see those same eyes glaze over as they daydream about what’s widely regarded as some of the best riding terrain in Australia that doesn’t involve a 2hr drive from the city just to get to.

With that in mind @DaccordiRider & I have decided it’s time to wrangle together a Cogal on some of those roads, and just in case catching up with a bunch of blokes (and possibly sheilas) from the internet isn’t enough to tempt you, we’ve decided to hold it the weekend before the Tour Down Under to throw in the chance to watch & possibly ride with the Pros while they’re out here working on their Rule #7 compliance.

The ride itself will start on the city fringe and will head south towards the sea & vines of McLaren Vale, what we’ll be hunting however is Old Willunga Hill to test the legs up same the slope the pros will be fighting for the TDU’s Queen Stage on just 6 days later. Once up top we’ll wind our way back through the picturesque Adelaide Hills before taking in one of the better descents towards the city down Greenhill Rd. All in all we’ll cover 144k’s with just over 1,500m of up (and just as much down).

It wouldn’t be a Cogal without some Malted Recovery Fluid and luckily we’ll be able to rely on the hospitality of the Belgian Beer Café for Mussels, Frites & Ale to fuel the crafting of stories describing a day of riding like lions. For  some post Cogal entertainment it’ll be a 2 minute walk to the parklands to find ourselves a spot to watch the pro’s 50k criterium that loops around the east end of Adelaide as the traditional pre cursor to the Tour Down Under kicking off on the following Tuesday.

Cycling and crashing are the kinds of things that come together whenever you liberally combine Newtonian Physics, skill, and overconfidence.
