Hey man, I am a freelance musician who plays the double bass. I mainly play in symphony orchestra's but have also love playing some bluegrass and jazz. I teach music at Christopher Newport University. I also work at the Williamsburg Winery, cheers. I fell back in love with bikes while playing at a music festival in Lucca, Italy. I rented a bike there for the summer and rode all over that beautiful Tuscan town after not riding a bike since I was a child. After coming back to the US I finally got a bike of my own. My first modern ride has been a 1987 TREK 400 Elance. I recently upgraded to a 2010 TREK 4.5 Madone, n+1. Cheers

Choice, or the perception of it, is one of the most powerful forces on Earth. The great secret lies in the locus of control, which suggests that if given the perception of a choice we will be more willing to endure hardship or suffering. We’ll suffer even for the promise of a future intangible reward so long as we feel we have a choice...

  1. Great article. I work in a business that involves tourism, retail, and the service industry  all rolled into one. There are days when I want to choke someone…well most days. But I have found the trick to getting through is riding to and from work. It ma… »

July 13 2014 marked the 35th anniversary of the seminal ‘cycling film’ Breaking Away. 35 years. Nothing stays popular for that long, right? Things get dated, lose their edge (if there was edge in the first place) and eventually become irrelevant (I’m looking at you, Rolling Stones). Yes, even legends get stale if left out too lon...

  1. Great movie. Ever since it became available on Netflix I have watched it a few times. It is good motivation to get the old 80′s steel frame Trek out for a ride. There is something about those down tube shifters I love and of course the fantastic feel of t… »

It has been many years (25!) since professional female cyclists have raced on the cobbles of the Champs Elysées. While running the Giro Donne concurrently with the Tour de France makes no sense to me, this Sunday’s women’s race does make sense. It should be the model for a Women’s Tour de France: the route, infrastructure, roadsi...

The Kemmelberg is a brute. In my opinion, its the hardest of the cobbled climbs in the Spring Classics; it has a high speed tarmac approach that saps the guns of their snap. The transition from tarmac to cobbles is awful, the stones are very badly laid throughout and if you don’t hit it just right, you’ll come to a standstill. The cobbl...

Het Volk (it will always be Het Volk to me) and now the Strade Bianche may well mark the sentimental beginning to the season, but those are specialized, pre-season races that appeal mostly to riders who are preparing for bigger objectives later in the year, such as the Cobbled or Ardennes Classics. Same goes for Tirreno Adriatico and Paris-Nice; t...

We are the Keepers of the Cog. In so being, we also maintain the sacred text wherein lie the simple truths of cycling etiquette known as The Rules. It is in our trust to maintain and endorse this list. The Rules lie at the beginning of The Path to La Vie Velominatus, not at the end; learning to balance them against one another and to welcome them...

I’m a naturally loud and weird person who expresses excitement through volume. Also, alcohol is supposed to be a depressant, but it doesn’t appear to work for me; all it does is make me happier (and louder) – until I have a little too much at which point I get weirder (a too-happy, too-loud kind of weird). But being a happy pers...
