@Mark1's activity:

The Bike. It is the central tool in pursuit of our craft. A Velominatus meticulously maintains their bicycles and adorns them with the essential, yet minimal, accoutrement. The Rules specify the principles of good taste in configuration and setup of our machines, but within those principles lies almost infinite room for personal taste. It seems in s...

  1. @DocBrian …. but look fugly don’t you think? For the similar money as Ultegra Di2 you can have Campag Record which, regardless of your opinion about its function, looks like it should be in an art gallery. »

  2. @Dan_R Exactly, if you re-read my initial post I think you will see you have misunderstood… this is the Kilo frame built to my size/spec with the ‘standard’ Kilo frame shaped tube set/1k weave wrap. I am saying I could have had a lighter frame if I ha… »

  3. @Dan_R I’m not sure I’m clear on what you are trying to say and I’m afraid I have no idea what a ‘stop & desist’ order is? The link you sent was for the complete bike, not the frame – the frames are specified here http://www.sartoantonio.it/. Howev… »

  4. Following my post several weeks ago with a photo of the hubs for my new number 1 bike stealth build, I am pleased to report a recent delivery from Italy. A semi custom Sarto Kilo frame. The semi custom is a standard tube set cut to your size. They do obvi… »

  5. @Dan_R @Gianni Well, I considered various frame options. Full custom Sarto was a little pricey and the ultra lightweight frame makes some aesthetic sacrifices to my taste. I have therefore sacrificed saving weight in some areas, largely because skippin… »

  6. @RedRanger Was I supposed to get these free with my hubs? I’ll be asking the question. »

  7. @Dinan @Chris @Dinan Yes, delivery to work is an excellent idea. Ultimately the VMH will become aware of the bike as you suggest @Dinan, frequent deliveries can cause more concern than necessary. I will indeed post developments. I have pretty much dec… »

  8. @unversio Now there’s an idea! »

  9. @roger Yes, there are a few less than favourable reviews however most, if not all, reference the previous MAG180 that had issues from creaking, durabilty and even complexity of servicing due to the pre-load mechanism. The new 170 from 2012 on appears to… »

  10. @Mark1 I of course meant VMH… is there no edit option or have I missed it? »

  11. Having, for various reasons, decided n+1 needs to be a stealth build and following many hours of consideration I have now begun the process of aquiring the chosen components. The first arrived this morning whilst I was at work. The box was so pleasingly l… »

That is the question. Are carbon wheels a viable option for everyday riding? Should carbon wheels be your go-to wheels rather than your just-for-racing wheels? I don’t really race and I don’t own any carbon wheels and I wonder. Granted, every professional is and has been on carbon wheels for many years so it’s easy to think we sho...

  1. @piwakawaka Three things: Rotational weight… you have to keep the weight of the wheel turning, harder the more weight is at the rim – rollers or road no difference. Rotational drag, alll about the wheel spinning as you say – rollers or road no diff… »

  2. @Marcus I would suggest that if every aspect of purchasing bike equipment needed a point other than ‘looking fast or cool’ 95% of cyclists would be riding around on £500 hacks and the the cycling industry would be on its arse. (I guess this goes for man… »

Truth be told, how many of us can resist a photo of ourselves Looking Fantastic on the bike? How many of us can resist the temptation of taking our eyes off the road and stealing a glimpse of ourselves in a shop window as we pass by? Not me, but then again a strong case could be made for my being a narcissist and I freely admit that I love looking...

  1. Taylor Phinney squeezing out the last drop 3km from the finnish of the London 2012 Olympic Time Trial. … and here’s Wiggo just 3kms from Gold. Did someone mention body fat? »

  2. This is me on the Dragon Ride this year. 215 kms and 3,300m of climbing. This is the Devil’s Elbow, 20-25% in the main and 30% at this particular point. Apologies for the lack of ‘V’ kit but if you look very closely, that’s a Velominati decal on the … »

Joshua – of Beer in the Bidon fame – returns from the depths of doing something scholarly in Montana. I hadn’t realized that Montana even had schools, but apparently they have loads of them. And, based on the fact that they awarded him a Ph.D., they are apparently prone to poor judgement.Josh deposited this little gem in the queue...

Clouds hang heavy in the sky, plump with a rain which contemplates the opportunity to hurl itself towards the Earth below. I get the sense that we wait for each other, the Rain and I; the rain relishes the opportunity to soak my clothes and skin, seeking to corrode my resolve while I cherish the opportunity to prove to myself that it will not be s...

  1. Whilst out on the Sunday Club run yesterday in the crappiest weather the Gower could throw at us, complete with sheep shit covered roads, it was suggested to me that I “get a winter bike, and old hack, £300 should do it…., saves all that cleaning” Trut… »

It seemed so easy, when I was young, to decide who to love and who to hate. These days, life is a complicated web of heroic deeds and dark shadows. As we get older, it appears our heroes and villains get mixed up.Fortunately for us, Cycling is about much more than bike racing. It is about loving the machine, submitting ourselves to the cathedral ...

  1. @heinous Visibly worn is probably far too late for the chain. I use a Park Tool Chain Checker (Item # CC-2) and change at .75% wear as recommended. Change the chain regularly and change the cassette when a new chain doesn’t change smoothly. It’s hard to … »

What is the best pro team kit ever? I’m talking team kit only, not a leader’s jersey, national team jersey or the national champion jersey. Not the worst either, for those are legion and worthy of a much longer article than this. @wiscot and I exchanged emails about Urs Freuler and the fantastic Atala kit which led to quick discussion o...

  1. @EricW Me too, the first modern kit that came to mind that doesn’t have “too many sponsors, too much sublimation”. Sorry, but I can’t agree on the Sky kit, just don”t like it for some reason.A lot seem to though, certainly plenty wearing it. »

I’ve said it once before, but it bears repeating now: adherence to Rule #29 carries with it the ultimate mission of the aspiring Velominatus, which is to geek out endlessly over the minimum amount of gear which yields maximum security in the event of a mechanical incident while riding. The goal here is twofold. First, with no European Poste...

The Olympic track racing fires off tomorrow and it’s time to remember an event discarded to the bin of noble sports. The Olympic roster of events is constantly evolving and devolving which is why we are now watching synchronized diving as an Olympic sport. What a world, what a world. Maybe it’s a sign of me getting too old but it makes m...
