My wife and I live in subtropical Maui. We moved here partly to break the horrible cycle of fall fitness followed by winters of undersubscribed gym memberships, eleven minute turbotrainer sessions, weight gain followed by depression and a complete loss of cycling fitness every f’ing spring. Bib knickers worn until May to ride exhausting littl...

  1. @RedRanger You do want to be a small amount lower on an MTB than a road bike so be careful about going too low – longer cranks on an MTB, and a more upright riding position will mean lower saddle height (centre of BB to top). Having said that, if you ri… »

Twiggo is dreaming of a Giro-Tour double. He has sent out mixed messages about his Tour ambitions. Will he use the Giro as the ultimate Tour preparation or will be burn all his matches in May and hope he can find another pack for July? He has abandoned his successful 2012 Tour run-up strategy of winning every stage race he entered the previous spri...

  1. *can’t* »

  2. @brett Still got the lantern. Cant waif for Contador to do the same all over the tour and Bretto to be wildly ecstatic over every stage. »

While all evidence points to the contrary, the 20th century’s greatest twatwaffle LE Gunderson may have got something at least half right after all. Of course it’s about the bike, otherwise we’d be runners. But there are other factors that contribute to what makes us Cyclists which can often be overlooked completely. Not the cloth...

  1. @Marcus You see those lumpy things in the photo? They’re called “hills”. Apparently there was one in Australia once but you dug it up and sold it to China. »

  2. “What is wrong with these people?”  They’re hanging out with you for starters (ba doom tish.) Nice article and nice pic though. »

  1. Wow. Even with my monumentally stupid picks that include 2 abandons (Wiggles and Ryder) and Van Garderen not even on the same continent, I’ve still got more points than Bretto. Any chance of getting bonus points for TJ winning a separate race while the G… »

  1. @Dan_R The Venge/EPS combo is a frame killer, particularly the Sworks Venge. Had one rider go through 3 frames here recently, cracking the frame at the FD mounts. For some reason the position of the FD moves under upshifts, and pushes the chain into the… »

  1. So according to Cyclingnews the stage today is going to finish at the Pantani monument on the Galibier. Should be a stage to send the Tifosi into Paroxysms if an Italian rider wins. »

To me, there is nothing cooler than riding in awful weather.  It automatically associates you with the Spring Classics, held in wet, wind, and rain, over the the worst roads you can imagine.  There is no image of cycling that I love more than of a tough Belgian Pro dressed in knickers, arm warmers, cycling cap perched beneath their helmet, grimac...

  1. In amidst all the Schleck love in this thread, is it just me or is Schleck’s bike fit looking less fucked now than it was? At the TOC it at least looks like he’s on a bike the right size. If I’ve got the wrong schleck I couldn’t care less they’re probably… »

  1. @Chris Aw hell no. I can’t see how you’d attach the spokes to the rim if they’re anchored to the hub. Your best bet is to try and get a replacement rim from Shimano and reuse the spokes and hub. If the freehubs’ rooted that’s probably a waste of time. »

Day 5 of the Six Days of the Giro continues with an impromptu VSP event.Lets have a look at where we are in the 2013 Giro. Wiggins must have spent time training in Luxembourg because he’s been descending like a Schleck when things get dodgy before disappearing into the team van to have a cry about it. Hesjedal has put in some good moves and...

  1. @PeakInTwoYears Yep. You’re trying to change the way the engine uses fuel, not starve it, stop it and start it. I’m 6 foot with a solid build and spent 2 seasons as a lightweight rower (72kg) which is not impossible but my ideal riding weight is around 78… »

  2. @Spun Up Also, I know it’s hidden in there somewhere, but (and this is just from personal experience) if I eat and hydrate with proper fluids on a ride, I’m less hungry hen you get off and less likely to smash through a ton of post ride food cos you’re … »

We’re into day four of the Six Days of the Giro series, let’s talk trash. Yes the Tour de France started a few years before the Giro and has always been credited as The Tour to win. You win the Giro, you are a stud. Win the Tour and you are a stud for life. Why is that? Is the Tour longer, tougher, more murderous, more beautiful? In the 20...

  2. @frank Do you mean Shimano lost the plot design wise when they started looking like Campy cranks? Caveat: I love all the Dura Ace cranks because they say Dura Ace on them. That and they’re fucking amazing, but you know whatever. »

  1. Nah fuck that. Ride the shit out of it with a 90mm stem on it. 1.5cm is doable in terms of reach, if that’s the only thing holding you back don’t worry about it. You might also be able to get bars for it with less throw, so that the levers aren’t as far a… »

  2. No problem. I’ve seen images of 11 speed Ultegra on the interwebs as well which shares the 4 arm crank, so that if you go down this route in future replacing rings won’t make you feel like you’ve just had your wallet dragged out of your back pocket throug… »

  3. @DocBrian That’s on the 9000 series 11 speed Dura Ace, the cranks use a 110bcd but they are making rings up to 55 tooth for them now. They’re also 4 bolt, so not quite standard compared to what is currently available. »
