@teocalli's activity:

The Bike. It is the central tool in pursuit of our craft. A Velominatus meticulously maintains their bicycles and adorns them with the essential, yet minimal, accoutrement. The Rules specify the principles of good taste in configuration and setup of our machines, but within those principles lies almost infinite room for personal taste. It seems in s...

  1. @Buck Rogers   yup off ebay and it did cost a ridiculous amount! »

  2. @Buck Rogers I could do with a bigger one as this is pretty small…… »

  3. Quite a nice little clip……. »

  4. @Puffy Sweeeeet.  Not so sure about the top race on the headset though………. »

I think it would be hard for anyone to make the case that Eddy Merckx was Roger de Vlaeminck’s Cycling Sensei, but I think we can all agree that De Vlaeminck was a student of Merckx, if only a student of his domination. But every student at some point becomes the master, and the driven student will always challenge the Order of Things.Eve...

  1. @brett The only DAFs I remember were smaller on account of the rubber band drive not being up to powering a bigger car as I remember them.   »

  2. @brett I have a funny feeling given the B plate on the car (suspecting that international travel was not that common even in Belgium back then) and the fact that it’s a smart/large car and the direction of EM’s bike that the offender is he himself. »

  1. @ChrisO That is sooooo true! WindyMilla bikes are on one of my loops and I regularly see a group out from there so may have passed him sometime. The bit that amused me are the prices she quotes – it did make me think of that quote “My biggest fear is … »

The Ride. It is the cathedral of our sport, where we worship at the altar of the Man with the Hammer. It is the end to our means. Indeed, The Bike may be the central tool to our sport, but to turn the pedals is to experience the sensation of freedom, of flight. It is all for The Ride. The world is overflowing with small, twisty roads that capture ou...

  1. @the-farmer Surprised you’ve not been blown away these last few days.  Been a bit grim up North? »

  2. @ChrisO Yup I’ve had to put on a long sleeve jersey the last couple of rides have been below 10 C. »

The darker months bring out the macabre in each of us; for Gianni it was the extinction of his beloved Park Tool adjustable clamp. For me, I found myself mourning the fact that I recently purchased a headset press. Ignoring the fact that a Velominatus of my stature didn’t already own one, the mourn behind the mourn is where the interest lies...

  2. @osbk67 I have those laced to lightweight Fiamme rims.  Beautiful. »

We want to look like Pros, sure, but what we’re really after is feeling Pro. All the aesthetics are just a tool we use to fuel the fickle internal combustion engine of Morale. In the end, there is little that will make you feel Pro more than clattering along a stretch of cobbles in a small group; instant “select breakaway”. One...

  1. @gilly Yeah I saw that too.  One of those “now why hasn’t someone thought of that before” moments.  I can think of a few different ways that might actually work. »

@Blackpooltower is obviously spending all his n+1 money on new cycling books, or he works in the little seen cycling-specific bookshop. Either way, he is nice enough to catch us all up on what is vvorthy. The lead image alone is enough, it’s fantastic. It’s worthy of its own article or, even better, a movie. It is not too late for hint...

  1. Nice list to work through there, thanks for the additions to pass to the VMW for the Christmas list. »

  3. @Beers I do usually aim at an oily rag but sometimes the darned things have a mind of their own.  The funniest one recently was the bright idea to use a tin so they couldn’t roll away from the rag.  It’s surprising how much bounce a ball bearing can get… »

  4. @pistard I work on the principle that a god set of old balls beats a young set every time….. »

  5. No forgetting free ball bearings in the pedals too.  Which reminds me I need to service mine. Though the thing that always seems to get me is carefully removing forks and making sure the bearings don’t drop out but there is always one from the bottom set… »

Waiting has never been my strong point. I’m anxious, but don’t really suffer from anxiety. Good things come to those who wait isn’t at the top of my list of proverbs to live by. White is a troublesome color; hard to keep clean. I have a white dress shirt that I never wear because even if I manage not to spill on the front of it, the cuffs and collar will look crap by the end of the day regardless. I mean, I can keep from eating something all day, but I can’t keep from drinking coffee or wine, and before very long som...

  1. @wilburrox Yeah but you know the old story – give a US car maker a 4 litre engine and you end up with a Truck with a Hemi, give it to a Euro car maker and you end up with a Rocket Sled. »
