Velominatus: Alex

Order: Level 4 Velominatus

Dad. Husband. 40+ year old guy who dreams of a lean and mean body, but loves pie too much too much to get below 200lbs. I ride a Specialized Allez Steel road bike. The last of the Steel Allez's back in 2005. It's been re-painted, upgraded with Ultegra, Mavic Open Pro's, Chris King bottom bracket, etc. It's black. It's steel. It rides like a dream. I also have an old Mountain bike, a Trek 1000, and I'm building up a single speed from an old frame.

Life is full of surprises. Some you don’t want, like a funnel web in a shoe, while others are completely unexpected but more than welcome, even if you are then left with figuring out the hows, whys and HOW?s of the serendipitous conundrum now presented to you. This is how I now feel, after fate knocked at my door via a source that doesn’...

If Rouler does not do reviews, we don’t do reviews. Think of this as a commentary on Bont’s Vaypor+ road shoe. Any discussion of points-of-contact will generate a storm of comments ending in why Sidi shoes and fi'zi:k saddles are the best. They may be the best for you but not for me. Everyone’s feet and everyone’s butt has d...

  1. I’ve got 2 points of contact that I’ve tried to swap out from my norm, but every time I do I go back to my “fredly” norm. The first is my shoes. I’ve tried (expensive) Sidi’s and not-as-expensive Shimano’s. The Sidi’s were terribly uncomfortable and I so… »

The race of the funny hat.Every team seems to have included one or two riders fresh off the Tour. One would either feel ruined or unbeatable a week after that slug fest, more than likely, ruined. I imagine there are a few riders dodging calls from their directors this week. Continue reading...

Het Volk (it will always be Het Volk to me) and now the Strade Bianche may well mark the sentimental beginning to the season, but those are specialized, pre-season races that appeal mostly to riders who are preparing for bigger objectives later in the year, such as the Cobbled or Ardennes Classics. Same goes for Tirreno Adriatico and Paris-Nice; t...

Twiggo is dreaming of a Giro-Tour double. He has sent out mixed messages about his Tour ambitions. Will he use the Giro as the ultimate Tour preparation or will be burn all his matches in May and hope he can find another pack for July? He has abandoned his successful 2012 Tour run-up strategy of winning every stage race he entered the previous spri...

We continue our Six Days of the Giro series with a look at the troubled bond between Marco Pantani and the Giro. Some were meant to be tormented, as though it were preordained that their brilliance should be balanced with fatal flaws. These are tortured souls, whose dramatic highs are equalled only by the devastating depths of their lows. Continu...

During the 1969 Tour de France, Felice Gimondi and Ray Poulidor were fined for taking a ride from a lorry up the Tourmalet. What about Merkcx? Well, he was towing the lorry. Its an old joke, but like any good joke, it stays funny no matter how many times you hear it. I bet it’s even funnier if you know what a lorry is. I knew a girl named Lori...

  2. Breakaway will get reeled in and leaders will mark each other until the 5k banner. Not much will change. Maybe it will be a day of crazy attacks, but I don’t think it will. »

It came to me in a moment of absolute clarity, the kind of clarity which only arrives to one in an oxygen-depleted state and at high speed – usually down a steep descent. It would be awfully nice to justify wearing my Molteni jersey, rather than having it hanging in my workshop all the time.It had been suggested a few times already by the tim...

  1. Long time lurker, first time poster. Anyway, I love the idea. I’ve already got clearance from the Wifey to ride that weekend. Now this gives me an excuse to buy one of these! http://www.vintagevelos.com/en/superlight-jerseys/42-molteni-wool-cycling-jerse… »
