Velominatus: Buck Rogers

Order: Guest Contributor

Started road racing in 1987 in VT. Raced through college at UVM and then fell away from the true path and started running. Have been back now for about five years. Currently riding a 2007 Eddy Merkcx Premium SL with 2009 Dura-Ace STI groupo, Mavic Premium SL wheelset, Selle San Marco saddle and Cinelli stem and handlebars, a dream of a bike for me. Recently acquired a 1992 Team Motorola Eddy Merckx with all circa 1992 componentry. she has quickly become Bike #2. Also have a Lemond Poprad CX for bike #3. Still looking for bike #4 (i.e. n+1).

We just finished a thorough examination of the Cyclist’s marquee accoutrement, the Cycling Cap. Today’s lesson is about the Cycling Cap’s red-headed step brother, the Winter Cycling Cap.This is a toque born of necessity; the thin cotton cap is nowhere near warm enough for the demands of the Flemish winter training season. Form s...

We are the Keepers of the Cog. In so being, we also maintain the sacred text wherein lie the simple truths of cycling etiquette known as The Rules. It is in our trust to maintain and endorse this list. The Rules lie at the beginning of The Path to La Vie Velominatus, not at the end; learning to balance them against one another and to welcome them...

  1. @thfc1987 Bike fittings are super important but $250 seems way too steep to me.  Seems like a decent fitting should not run you more than $100. And like someone else said a bit ago, you can self fit to a point using numerous online fitting sites. »

  2. @wiscot Just today I was having a discussion with a West Point Cadet who is on the cycling team and from the El Paso area.  Even though he’s from El Paso he is a HELL of a climber and very small.  I asked him if he knew of Raul Alcala and he said that h… »

It doesn’t take a genius to see what’s going on here. Rule #5, Rule #9, Rule #10; every rider in this frame Looks Fantastic (most other Rules). The riders are in short sleeves and shorts while the public apparently has scavenged materials from rubbish bins and the local grain elevator in a very visually unpleasant effort to keep war...

  1. @gerty Agree on all accounts.  REALLY wanted LeMan to win that day, esp after gifting Le Blaireau the stage in ’86.  Then he overcooked that corner and could not hold on to the line.  DAMN! We had to wait another two years before the first American win o… »

  2. @TommyTubolare This all really stemmed from him trying to drop the moniker of Elephantino, no?  He hated that nickname and wanted to try to create a new one and came up with the whole Pirata persona. »

  3. @Giles He always seems to have his tongue out in his photos.  Too funny. »

If we liked breathing stale, recycled air, we’d all take up a sport like wrestling or indoor fly-fishing. But we love the feel of a gale on our faces. We cherish the smell of cow manure filling our nostrils with its almost tangible grittiness. We hold scared the privilege to breathe in diesel fuel while doing hill repeats up l’Alpe d...

One of the things that strikes me most about the English is they don’t appear to have developed any sort of “inner dialog”. It seems anything that passes through the brain is parlayed directly to the tongue; if the thought being expressed is an insult to you, it will generally include a query for confirmation: “You’r...
