Velominatus: Cantona

Order: Level 3 Velominatus

@Cantona's activity:

Twiggo is dreaming of a Giro-Tour double. He has sent out mixed messages about his Tour ambitions. Will he use the Giro as the ultimate Tour preparation or will be burn all his matches in May and hope he can find another pack for July? He has abandoned his successful 2012 Tour run-up strategy of winning every stage race he entered the previous spri...

@Cantona's posts:

  1. Bradley is a mod. That means he likes skinny ties. That was important for us to know while he was winning. So maybe it is now. »

It looks so easy on the television. Well, no, actually it looks pretty bloody hard. We think we have some understanding of how they suffer, how their bodies can take the continual beating. But we don’t really know. Not even by riding these abominations they call roads twice in the space of a few days can we understand the scale of the thing...

@Cantona's posts:

  1. What an amazing tense end to a beautiful race »

  2. @Rob check steephill.tv links. Very good now »

  3. Fabian eating up the gap now »

  4. @RedRanger He did. I dislike his commentary in general »

  5. @RedRanger »

  6. @Cantona i meant him, not Jim »

  7. And there he goes. »

  8. Cancellara 20 seconds back and Eurosport is counting Jim out?  Very premature….. »

As referenced in the 2012 V-Moment of the year article and ensuing discussion, it was a most Vawesome year for cycling. It’s been hypothesized here and on cycling sites with more integrity that the fantastic racing of 2012 may be, at least in part, attributed to a cleaner peloton. Unless you watched the Tour de France you’d think the da...

@Cantona's posts:

  1. I can’t belive there are people swallowing his bullshit that he rode clean for Retirement Shack. I guy who doped his whole life comes back to the sport after years off,much older, and then still manages to go toe to toe with contador for the bulk of three… »

I must admit to not having read most of the cycling memoirs in the Works. I may eventually but the local public library doesn’t carry any of them and never will so I’ll have to buy them or ask Frank to tote everything he has to Hawaii. I did get off my wallet and buy these two and it was money well spent. David Millar and Tyler Hamilton...

@Cantona's posts:

  1. Thank you both – and for the link. Good to know »

  2. @Chris I agree.  But in general — not looking at Sky specifically — shouldn’t the average speed of the peloton be dropping if doping is less prevalent? »

  3. Here’s a question that was being debated last night with some cycling friends: Many are viewing the Lance uproar as a reflection of a time when doping in cycling was more rampant, and that today’s riders are in general more clean.  If this were true, sho… »

  4. @Giles It’s a good story but it doesn’t allude to Betsy being able to get compensation for being dragged through the mud all these years, which is pretty hard to swallow. »

  5. Interesting conversation I was having with a friend: What happens with all the people that Lance sued for libel over the years (his old soigneur, various whistle blowers and journalists). Do they have a case now to try to recuperate all the money spent f… »

I’ve said it once before, but it bears repeating now: adherence to Rule #29 carries with it the ultimate mission of the aspiring Velominatus, which is to geek out endlessly over the minimum amount of gear which yields maximum security in the event of a mechanical incident while riding.The goal here is twofold. First, with no European Poste...

@Cantona's posts:

  1. Lezyne pump as shown above.  Used it just this morning and she’s a beaut. One tube.  Two levers. ID, Bank Card, Phone. No patches, no multitool. »

You can all wave “goodbye” to your Post GT Depression Syndrome, because the Men’s Olympic Road Race is only three days yonder. I don’t typically give two shits about this particular event; while contested by national teams, unlike the Worlds it appears as just another one-day race on a calendar filled with events that carry...

@Cantona's posts:

  1. @TommyTubolare First off, I’m not English, nor do I live anywhere in GB, so let’s get past that bit. Second, I too would prefer third in PR to a bronze, but what I meant to say is that there is an award for third in the olympics and that’s a big deal. … »

  2. Re: first place, I think the olympics are the only time when that isn’t true.  Nobody cares who finishes third in Paris-Roubaix, but in the Olympics, third place gets a bronze medal.  That’s a big deal.  Winning an olympic medal of any colour is a big de… »

  3. @Marcus Probably not. Vino’s doping episode, coming when it did in the tour, just hurt so much more. Such a black day that I remember too well. »

  4. Druggy cunt. Awful Olympic winner Nice worn from Uran »

We are proud to announce a change to the Velominati Super Prestige moving forward: sponsorship. We are delighted (if a little surprised) at the interest our partners showed in this endeavor, despite the short notice we gave them. Four sponsors will be gracing the sides of our team bus for this year’s race: fi’zi:k is our Super Domesti...

  1. Easily the most boring Tour in years.  Amazing job by Sky nonetheless. Hope the Vuelta delivers more….. »

Everyone knows that things like “tactics” and “thinking” are for the weak. After all, if you’re strong enough, loud enough, and stubborn enough, you should be able to outlast those pesky details like evidence, facts, or people who can ride their bikes faster than you can.Ivan Basso knows this, and Ivan Basso believes h...

@Cantona's posts:

  1. @brett Pardon me, but what a load. Ryder is a young racer coming in to his own and there’s no reason to think he’s “second rate”. Phinney wins a 10 km time trial and we have to suffer through a week of the American announcers talking about him as though … »

The Poggio. It’s probably one of the most famous easy climbs in the world; going through old cycling photographs, I rarely come across one where the leaders haven’t moved Sur La Plaque. It has a reputation, however, for being a real leg breaker, mostly because any climb is a big climb once you cross its summit after a paltry 291 kilomet...

@Cantona's posts:

  1. I love Fabian, and he is often the strongest on the course, as he was today. But if he doesn’t start to use his head as much as his legs he will have more and more of these second place finishes. Hats off to Gerrans for a great finishing sprint. »

Our balaclava wearing friend, @Oracle, submitted this winter reflection on The V. The article is a little ripe, but for many, spring is still a long way off and the gym or a balaclava are the only solutions to some tough questions. Yours in Cycling, Gianni Continue reading...

It’s right around this time of year when the little voice in my head that spurs me on in cold, wet, Rule #9 conditions starts getting overpowered by all my other personalities who at this stage are gathering stones and crowbars and getting ready to enforce their will on him regarding their preference for riding in nice, warm, sunny conditi...
