Finally, some cold nasty Belgian one day racing. Oman, Qatar, does anyone brag about winning those stage races? Yes, they might but really, it’s a tune up for the real season which finally begins this Saturday. Will racing in China or Oman grow the sport? Will there be a new wave of inspired young racers from these countries. Does professiona...

  1. I came to this after the race was over, so……. But this? This is PERFECT! “What is the point? The money spent getting everything to China would be better spent supporting the smaller historic races and making sure they include women’s categories.” … »

Every night I pray to Merckx that in the morning when I wake up I’ll have a Campagnolo Free Candy Van with a Super Dome. And every morning, its a fresh disappointment that it didn’t come true. Continue reading...

  1. @Jim  – Bill was in and out of Boulder a lot in those days (Red Zinger etc). I went to a party he was at once and met the guy but don’t remember all that much more about it or him (it WAS the ’70′s, if ya know what I mean). »

That is the question. Are carbon wheels a viable option for everyday riding? Should carbon wheels be your go-to wheels rather than your just-for-racing wheels? I don’t really race and I don’t own any carbon wheels and I wonder. Granted, every professional is and has been on carbon wheels for many years so it’s easy to think we sho...

  1. Oh. And I think that tire may be on backwards. »

  2. Bike #1 started with some cheap Shimano wheels at close to 1900 grams….. soon followed by an old set of Velomax wheels at 1655…. and then ditched for some customs build by my son at 1405. They are SILVER on SILVER on SILVER and shine like they’re on f… »

  1. Never too much of a climber myself, rock that is. However, living in Boulder Colorado a good number if my cycling friends also enjoyed climbing and running to the higher altitudes. A fave of two friends was….. leave Boulder (5,400′ elevation) at dark th… »

Exposure to religion in my youth was by way of a brief dose of sunday school at the local Unitarian church. The point there, evidently, was to learn about other religions and turtles. If a point was being made, I missed it. When Catholic friends of mine came over for the weekend I would accompany them to the closest Catholic church and we would end...

  1. re: Campy tool prints…… #4 is a fixed cup installer/remover. #5 is for cutting or cleaning up BB threads. #’s 2 & 3 sorta have me stumped. I think #2 is for reaming head tubes and #3 is for pressing in HS cups. Been a while since I’ve seen the rea… »

There must still be a few readers out there who have not followed the Dutch Monkey down the merry tubular path; for them I offer an update on an alternative. Road tubeless has been lauded as the best thing to happen to cycling since the introduction of seatpins. These have been around for years but the road version has not gathered the expected mom...

  1. @Oli – Yeah I have. Not easily, but do-able. I’ve saved a few tubis by going right through the sidewall into the tube. »

  2. Good read. I’ve worked in bike shops off and on since 1978 (“a friggin’ old guy-groan”) and always had tubis on at least one of my bikes up until 3 or 4 years ago, BUT, these days a GP4000S with a light tube and a pair of 1405gram wheels is what I’m ridin… »
