The future is dark, which is the best thing the future can be, I think.- Virginia WoolfOur actions lie on the horizon of the present, in that swirling cloud where fantasy turns into reality. To plan is to cast a shadow into the future, to attempt to lay shape to the unknown. As the present merges with the future, reality will try our plans on for s...

  1. @harminator  I was nervous the first couple of times but you get used to it pretty quick. Great challenge to learn to ride properly in synch with another person. Really makes you think about what you do, and how to get better. »

  2. That’s me on the front showing the barest hint of calf muscle. But I think we can agree in the calf department I’m pretty much fully optimised! »

  3. Frank, who needs calves anyway. I’ve lived my whole life without a set, I think it saves weight! »

Never forget your roots, they say… OK, I’m a child of the 70′s, and back then bicycles were as big a part of my life as they are today. We’d always be out riding, building tracks and jumps, and tinkering with our Dragsters, stripping them down to emulate our motocross heroes, with varying results. All these memories came f...

  1. I had a Malvern Star Dragster, mid 70′s into the 80′s. Mine was a budget model, no t-bar shifter but I could get it round a BMX track just fine. I lusted over a Redline or Diamondback but the old dragster just wouldn’t die no matter what I did to it. Then… »

The race of the funny hat.Every team seems to have included one or two riders fresh off the Tour. One would either feel ruined or unbeatable a week after that slug fest, more than likely, ruined. I imagine there are a few riders dodging calls from their directors this week. Continue reading...

  1. Yates Boys. They are going to be stars, I’ve just submitted their Australian Residency applications for them. None of us like Valverde much, but shit he knows how to win a race. That was a masterclass in pacing himself on that last climb and putting in t… »

Attention all Velominati. The Tour VSP is going on line and it should be a good one. Sure, between Froomy and Bertie a person could hedge their bets but Moviestar is all in for Valverde, BMC for TeeJay, Astana for the Shark and Garmin is finally committing to a team leader in Talansky. Some other teams (ahem…Trek Factory Racing for one) have...

  1. The site seems to be running again. Gianni must’ve been dispatched to pour beer into it again. Good work! »

  2. Gutted for Bertie and the rest of our viewing pleasure. Can Richie take the fight to Nibbles? I hope so and want him to do well, but it’s almost impossible for an Aussie to cheer for Sky. It’s like an Aussie is captain of the English cricket team, you’re … »

  3. VSP PICKS: 1. Contador 2. Valverde 3. Froome 4. Purito 5. Rolland »

  1. Only 11 Aussies in the peloton, 9 Yanks. What’s going on England? Poor show chaps. I hope Bertie hits this one out of the park. »

Climbing is something I enjoy more than I am good at it; any time I see a new road pointing up to the heavens, I find myself irresistibly drawn to explore where it leads. Every season I come to the conclusion that my training routes are all very hilly and I arrive at the brilliant idea that I should plot out a new course which seeks out the flatt...

  1. @VeloSix It’s interesting to see what people’s tactics are in approaching KOM’s in races. I have a pretty good success rate being more of a goat myself. We use Old Willunga and nearby Wickhams hill in these races. They are 10 minute 3km climbs that bot… »

  1. @frank Which would lead you to wonder why Pettachi is left out, surely they need a climbing domestique? »

  2. @piwakawaka Was a great couple of days. Great watching Bertie soar. Interesting to note he was the only guy Sur le Plaque on those last two climbs. Showing some real strength. »

There are two ways in life to be good at something. The first way is the most obvious, which is to actually be good at something. This is harder than it sounds because you need things like skills, talent, fortitude, and light sabers. The other way doesn’t require those things but it has its own challenges; basically, you have to be holistical...

For the simple reason that the Cobbled and Ardennes Classics are behind us, I have not alternative but to get back on my soap box about the Giro being the best of the three Grand Tours. Well, usually, at least. Last year’s race sucked the big one (even if it was supremely Rule #9), but for the most part it is the race that is the most c...

  1. Pretty pumped to see how these next few days play out. Stelvio and Gavia followed by Zoncolan in one week is some kind of viewing heaven! Still hoping the old man toughs it out whist each of the young uns suffer a bad day. With the cold and damp a great p… »

“You ruined a heap of photos!” Not the words you want to hear when the photos in question are ones you didn’t shoot, but were in. “How?” “You’re too low, too compressed.” At least he didn’t say I was ugly. “And you’re ugly.”When you work with professional photographers, you pic...

  1. @minion Tyler blamed someone else for hitting the brakes in front of him, big bunch going through a tight corner, who could have  seen that coming…. »

  2. Tyler doesn’t need luck, he needs to learn to ride a bike. Anyone who falls off that much isn’t out of luck, he is out of skill. The other guys must quake in fear when they see him near them. End rant. Cuddles continues to be spot on with his positioning… »

  3. Great win by the most Aussie Dutchman in the peloton, Pete Weening! »

  4. Bloody Hell, I’m top 10 even with J-Rod gone. »

  5. The old man and his team to diesel to the win. An unfortunate J Rod to just miss again. VSP PICKS: 1. Cadel 2. J Rod 3. Quintana 4. Majikka 5. Sammy Sanchez »

The 100th running of Liège-Bastogne-Liège takes place this Sunday. Danny-boy Martin will be marked heavily as the defending champion. Malmerde, and Phil Gil have shown they are peaking too. Froomy has thrown his hat into the ring, as he did last year but after last years 26th place, maybe it’s training. 263 kms, past winners include a long...

  1. @Marcus Oh yeh, but most of the stuff in the right photo are non genuine parts. »

The Ride. It is the cathedral of our sport, where we worship at the altar of the Man with the Hammer. It is the end to our means. Indeed, The Bike may be the central tool to our sport, but to turn the pedals is to experience the sensation of freedom, of flight. It is all for The Ride. The world is overflowing with small, twisty roads that capture ou...

  1. @Mike_P I’d imagine Fast Phil still wakes up with a stupid grin on his face when he dreams about that win. Incompetence of the highest order. »

The Amstel Gold Race, 251 km from Maastricht to Valkenburg, the hard way. There appears to be no flat sections longer than ten meters. There are thirty-four mean little climbs to ruin the legs. We have moved on from the real Spring Classics. There is no rest in this VSP; The Ronde and Roubaix were amazing but we must continue. Legs that are smoked...

  1. Great to see Fast Phil back. And kudos to BMC, that was a faultless team ride. »

It’s no secret that I’m prone to riding in the big ring as much as possible, mostly on account of my not being a giant sissy. In accordance with the ISO Non-Sissy Standard, I also never read instruction manuals or ask for directions when lost. I make sure to only rarely ask my VMH to turn up the radio when Adele comes on, usually follo...

  1. @Mikael Liddy Yeh, sorry about that. We were mid brand change for the team and the new gillet had not come in yet. I am now sorted with nicely matching kit, gloves etc. The EMPS stays though! »
