The Kemmelberg is a brute. In my opinion, its the hardest of the cobbled climbs in the Spring Classics; it has a high speed tarmac approach that saps the guns of their snap. The transition from tarmac to cobbles is awful, the stones are very badly laid throughout and if you don’t hit it just right, you’ll come to a standstill. The cobbl...

Het Volk (it will always be Het Volk to me) and now the Strade Bianche may well mark the sentimental beginning to the season, but those are specialized, pre-season races that appeal mostly to riders who are preparing for bigger objectives later in the year, such as the Cobbled or Ardennes Classics. Same goes for Tirreno Adriatico and Paris-Nice; t...

  1. @strathlubnaig Brad needs to MTFU and check out Rule #5. It is well and good winning TdF in summer sun but what has he won in the wet? Never won at Crystal Palace, a proper hard race, what chance a damp race in Italy? Back to the boards I’d say. »

  2. @imakecircles Yes brilliant move by Costa. Commentary never mentioned him though he sat for 10k behind Vaverde. »

  3. @Steampunk Well if I had to ride past warm showers every twenty minutes after five hours in the rain i think i would take a DNF too. Mind you i don’t recall collecting a paycheck as a bike rider. Poor showing GB. »

  4. I don’t think valverde will be happy with JRod and his double attack after Nibbles was good enough to set up Valverde. Magnus Bakstedt saying a Spaniard not wearing rainbow is unforgiveable with two riders in the finale. »

  5. Hushovd, what? I am 47yr old, show me a big climb I will hang on till the near end. Show me ten hills, forget it. I am not Horners doctor but i think not. Spains ‘tres capitan’ sounds like a car crash waiting to happen. A day for a spoiler me thinks. So I… »

The early eighties saw the tide change in the European Peloton. Components were taking on a new, curvy shape as they left their boxy forms behind. The glint of toe clips in the sun would become a rarer sight as the move towards clipless pedals would take hold in 1985. English speakers were winning the big races classically won by continental Pros.T...

  1. Betancur did me proud again today. Even as a devote follower of Rule V, i was happy to watch the suffering but given the chance would have feigned a life threatening saddle sore rather than take to the wheels. Well done strathlubnaig! »

  2. To most of the field The Giro is the biggest race of the year. There is no way the Italians are going to let a non-Italian win two in a row. Just watch Wiggo and Ryder get worked over in the mountains. Watch them  get worked over before the TT’s. Teams ar… »
