Velominatus: Dr c

Order: Level 2 Velominatus

God loves a trier

@Dr c's activity:

You can only spend so much time with the Schlecks before you start talking like them, and the fabulous Fabs seems to have crossed the threshold. I’ve heard more complaining from him this season than I have talk about pushing harder on the pedals or going steady up with more speed or going full gas like everyone else, but just doing it for ...

  1. And that tees us up nicely for 2015 – I think we’ll be seeing plenty of the Rainbow Bands nest season »

There was never any question in my mind that tubulars are more romantic than clinchers, and as a Velominatus I was always convinced that the additional time and care that goes into gluing on a set of tires would make you feel just that much more connected to your bike and the history of the sport itself. I was skeptical, however, that tubs would ri...

  1. This stuff is just the ticket Ridden my Veloflex Roubaix with puncture resistant layer….. Piece of glass gashed rear during a circuit race, unstitched etc and inner patched – now my spare Then slow flat on front – getting pissed off – couldn’t find… »

Brett’s fine Nick Cave article got me thinking about music and cycling. We spend lots of time alone on our bikes. The bike is on autopilot, it stays upright from second to second, freeing up our brains to consider anything or nothing. Music might be the only riding companion we have but it has to be the right music. Being as Pro as possible is...

  1. True, the earplugs are a shortcut to the Rearly Gates, but a compromise is to jam your phone in your central helmet vent, vertivally, much like a Shark fin (I assume this is how Vince Nibali got his name You do look like a twat, but Barbra Streisand has … »

Attention all Velominati. The Tour VSP is going on line and it should be a good one. Sure, between Froomy and Bertie a person could hedge their bets but Moviestar is all in for Valverde, BMC for TeeJay, Astana for the Shark and Garmin is finally committing to a team leader in Talansky. Some other teams (ahem…Trek Factory Racing for one) have...

  1. Indeed, Geraint Thomas is my favourite rider, not least for the crappy but entertaining FB postings he comes up with – just a good lad – I particularly loved his teambus doorway comments on Stage 5 when he said it was really tough to lose Froome, and ever… »

There was a time when the world was painted in hues of black and white. Right and Wrong were separated by lines painted in such a thick, heavy paint that even to wander close was to already alter your very nature. The Elders taught us on which side we were to dwell and what evils would descend upon us if we were to transcend into the void. Litt...

  1. but this is my favourite, just across the road from my surgery – I just ride on the road where it is safer »

  2. We like to make it just a little more tricky in Belfast »

The Tour de Suisse can be everyone’s warm-up for the Tour de France, including all you VSP dreamers. The big show seems to be the Critérium de Dauphanié this year, as far as Tour de France contenders go but the Tour de Suisse still has some big guns showing up. Twiggo is here, not for a Tour warm up, unless people are worried about Richie P...

I don’t know how a guy who shows off the better part of a half meter of seat post comes to the conclusion that his saddle is too low, but that precise thought occupies an enormous amount of time. Ever closer looms the minimum insertion point on my seat pin, yet I am irrevocably bound to explore its limits.I actually wish my legs were shorter...

  3. Are you sure you have not just grown another 4mm taller? I have a good video to post about this (well, vaguely, at best, borderline relevant), but shalln’t until you explain how I post a vid link in it’s full glory as a large coloured square with a white… »

For the simple reason that the Cobbled and Ardennes Classics are behind us, I have not alternative but to get back on my soap box about the Giro being the best of the three Grand Tours. Well, usually, at least. Last year’s race sucked the big one (even if it was supremely Rule #9), but for the most part it is the race that is the most c...

  2. @Dr C Scratch that, they are actually climbing from the other side and descending the way we went up and down – hell of a descent in that case! It is soooo fast on the bottom 1/3 just before Bormio – yikes….. brown trousers »

  3. Can you not hack into Eurosport somehow? – that said, only showing the last 3 hours, so will only see the second half of the Stelvio presumably Shame, as having climbed both the Stelvio and the Gavia Pass, I reckon the Gavia is the one to see, as much mo… »

  4. @sthilzy He knows he beaten – shame, much more fun when he loses the rag Good to see Rigo getting some exposure as team leader after all his donkey work at Sky – justifies his shift in teams – interesting to see how second string skyteam manage to loo… »

  5. Anyone found a link to a Cuddles post race interview yet….. just askin? »

The divisive nature of Rule #29 is not to be underestimated. It is but a humble satchel, but our rejection of its use sends people completely out of their minds. One fine gentleman even threatened my editor at Cyclist Magazine with cancellation of his subscription on the basis that they published an article wherein I espoused the virtues of goi...

I can can feel his cold breath on my back, like a shadow drifting through an alleyway. He’s not yet upon me, but the Man with the Hammer is lurking nearby. I’m not even sure he has the intention to strike; he’s just staying close, cruelly reminding me that my fate is in his hands.I feel the heaviness in my legs from the first turn...

The Amstel Gold Race, 251 km from Maastricht to Valkenburg, the hard way. There appears to be no flat sections longer than ten meters. There are thirty-four mean little climbs to ruin the legs. We have moved on from the real Spring Classics. There is no rest in this VSP; The Ronde and Roubaix were amazing but we must continue. Legs that are smoked...
