Velominatus: Fausto

Order: Level 1 Velominatus

Location: Bristol, UK

A latecomer to the world of the V, via things muddy, knobbly-tyres and *gasp* gravity powered. Has since seen the light and is seeking redemption via Rule #9 compliant commuting, a love of hills and an indulgence in the craft. Sprints like a Grimpeur, climbs like a Puncheur - working on improving both.

Day 5 of the Six Days of the Giro continues with an impromptu VSP event.Lets have a look at where we are in the 2013 Giro. Wiggins must have spent time training in Luxembourg because he’s been descending like a Schleck when things get dodgy before disappearing into the team van to have a cry about it. Hesjedal has put in some good moves and...

  1. Heart wants to see Wiggo go on the attack and take ‘em all to bits; head says there’s about as much chance of that happening as there is of me making 1st Cat this season. Technically it’s possible but it ain’t gonna happen unless I get a shipment of Berti… »

We continue our Six Days of the Giro series with a look at the troubled bond between Marco Pantani and the Giro. Some were meant to be tormented, as though it were preordained that their brilliance should be balanced with fatal flaws. These are tortured souls, whose dramatic highs are equalled only by the devastating depths of their lows. Continu...

  1. *Sigh* I miss watching Pantani grinding himself to bits in the high mountains. Rocket fuelled or not, it was fantastic to watch. »

Twiggo is dreaming of a Giro-Tour double. He has sent out mixed messages about his Tour ambitions. Will he use the Giro as the ultimate Tour preparation or will be burn all his matches in May and hope he can find another pack for July? He has abandoned his successful 2012 Tour run-up strategy of winning every stage race he entered the previous spri...

  1. Nice racing, anyone who doesn’t get why downhills matter on a road bike needs to watch that stage! @Paolo You’re absolutely right, that Giro lid of Paolini’s looks bloody awful, more so with those ridiculous Assos bug-eyed sunnies. Seriously folks, he l… »

We’re heaping coals on the Giro frenzy that’s burning in all corners of the Cycling world by issuing the second installment of the monthly BigRingRiding Sur la Plaque series while at the same time kicking off the Six Days of the Giro series where we’ll post six articles on the subject of this, the best Grand Tour of the year. Y...

  1. @PeakInTwoYears , @DocBrian It was growing a pair and shaving them that got me into this bother! I’ve tried the Mutually Assured Destruction route of suggesting she doesn’t shave her legs, but frankly I find the idea as repugnant as she finds my sleek pi… »

  2. @PeakInTwoYears Nice, I like that plan, I’m just not sure if she’ll even let me get away with ‘for big races only’ – the reaction so far has been quite definite on any future shaving activity – or the lack thereof. No-one ever said the life of the Velom… »

  3. @ChrisO Yep, that’s my plan as well. I don’t think she can resist for long, and I know she’ll give in eventually. It takes two to tango, after all. »

  4. It seems I have a problem here, advice from the Keepers required please! Despite being a life-long Rule #33 dodger (for which read MTBer), I took our recent sunny training camp as the perfect time to become fully rule compliant. The guns looked great aft… »

  1. Wiggo has been working his over-long socks off on his climbing; I reckon he can do it. I suspect it will be more interesting than recent GTs with a few more swaps of the jersey to make it stick from Nibbles though. Ryder an honourable 3rd with a spirited … »

  1. V-kitte sighting: Bristol, UK. Witte V-jersey, Ashton Court climb, Thurs 25th April, 1830hrs. Black cycling cap with white stripe worn under lid – who are ya? Would be good to meet some other Bristol Velominati; we were descending the other way en route … »

There is something to love about a race that makes a deviation to its route for the simple joy of sending a fleet of professional riders up a fiendishly steep and narrow ramp. The Cote du Stockeu offers zero benefit to the route from a logistical standpoint – in fact, all it does is complicate things. On the way down from the Cote de Wanne &#...

We came tantalizingly close to adding a foray up the Mur de Huy during our excursion to Liege-Bastogne-Liege during this year’s Keepers Tour. But good sense and The Anti-V prevailed, as they are wont to do, and only two of us were left wanting a dig at the most notorious finishing climb in the Classics season.I write this, then, woefully igno...

  1. @Dr C Me too – are your mates on the Legro’s training camp? I’ll say hi if they are. A lot of Texans out here at the moment as well. Great riding out here; not sure I’m going to like going home to miserable weather and potholed roads, riding out here is… »

  2. Apparently the cheeky bit in the middle is 17%, still pretty cheeky though. Phil Gil to display some form in the bands, edging Martin through sheer bloody-mindedness. Would like to see Porte do well, but I’m not sure he’s got the goods to take the win – y… »

Last year we saw Evelyn Stevens out-last Marianne Vos at the top of the Mur de Huy. The take home message is don’t start one’s charge too early. Vos should know this finish, having won it four times already. It’s hard to know who is on form in the professional women field as the races are too far apart to infer much from the last...

  1. @Chris The key was in the previous post ‘Mediterranean training camp’ – definitely not Bristol! I’ve been outdone anyway; one of my mates ended up doing a short bit of climbing and descending with Sir Wiggo, got to shake his hand too. Safe to say we’re h… »

  2. @unversio I have both a GoPro3 and a no.bi number plate bracket – I must admit I hadn’t thought of combining the two, but I’m not sure the bracket will be strong enough, I think the vibration will stop it getting decent footage. What does work is the K-… »

Yes it is a race named after a barely drinkable Dutch beer. I have enjoyed Amstel beer, brought to our table by a nice waitress, sitting outside in the Dutch spring. Atmosphere is everything. Do the Dutch brew awesome beer? I drank some good stuff in Amsterdam last spring but I’m pretty sure it was Belgian. Now we begin the Ardennes three race...

  2. Do bike endoresments come any better? Not only am I lucky enough to be enjoying a sunny mediterranean training camp, but our group was joined today by Alex Dowsett (Movistar, ex-Sky) – not to put a bunch of chippers and club racers to the sword, but to r… »

Keepers Tour 2012 veteran @ChrisO is back to his racing ways in Cyprus. Yes, this is not Northern France; let us take a brief respite and go to warmer Mediterranean climes. It looks so easy on the television. Well, no, actually it looks pretty bloody hard. We think we have some understanding of how they suffer, how their bodies can take the continual beating. But we don’t really know. Not even by riding these abominations they call roads twice in the space of a few days can we understand the scale of the thing...

  2. I’d like to see Faboo extend his run of form, but I can’t help thinking that things happen in threes and he’ll end up on his arse again. As for the rest – pffft, pure guesswork. I’d like to see Phinney make the podium on V alone, Chavanel should be in wi… »

Imagine a world without the little things we take for granted; a house without a roof, a pub with no beer, a Keepers Tour without any clothes. The other thing that h...
