Velominatus: Gizmo_

Order: Level 4 Velominatus

@Gizmo_'s activity:

2013 was The Year of the Anti-V. In every other year, the Velominati Cogclave to decide the V and The Anit-V awards is full of curses and thrown pint glasses, usually in defense of each of our chosen V-Moments. 2013 saw the same scene, except this time it was for us having too many competing Anti-V Moments and when it came time to discuss the V-Mom...

  1. @Mike_P Another vote for Tony Martin’s breakaway here.  174km with your nose in the wind and not slow either – 44.8kmh average.  And when he knew the peloton were trying to close him down he went deeper and deeper into the cave trying to make it happen… »

The dark makes everything worse; something primal awakens in us when the sun has gone and we are wrapped in the black cloak of night. Laying in bed, my worst thoughts and fears come knocking like some used-car salesperson who won’t leave me alone. There is no shutting down of this process, our imaginations are given free reign to do their wor...

  1. @Pedale.Forchetta Bella fotografia! How technology has advanced in our short lifetimes.  I remember well a night around February 1995, I was riding home after helping backstage at a local theatre.  It was past midnight, misty, and chilly, but only a fe… »

I’m a naturally loud and weird person who expresses excitement through volume. Also, alcohol is supposed to be a depressant, but it doesn’t appear to work for me; all it does is make me happier (and louder) – until I have a little too much at which point I get weirder (a too-happy, too-loud kind of weird). But being a happy pers...

  1. I’ve found a Third Way on the Helmet Question.  I’ve been wearing a Hovding and a proper cap. »

Addiction is typically defined as a bad thing. Addiction to drugs, to alcohol, sex or even work is usually portrayed as a condition to be battled, to overcome. The same sources may recommend a strict regime of regular exercise and healthy living as the perfect antidote to the bad addictions that befall an overwhelming majority of the general popul...

  1. For me the reason why cyclists become so obsessive about it is the difficulty.  I like to walk in the forest near where I live.  Without any real training or commitment, just a (fairly) decent pair of walking shoes and some base fitness, I can walk for mi… »

Passo San Boldo lies in the northern reaches of the Italian Alps, and was a walking path until World War I, when the Austrians realized that traffic accidents were a less conscience-laden approach to controlling population growth than chucking mortars across a border at people who drink different alcohol than they do.  Access to the steep, one-la...

Ah, February 14 is here again. A very special day for all of us. A day you don’t want to forget. A day when you make that extra effort to show the one you love just how much they mean to you. V Day.On this day, I will rise early, tiptoeing out of bed so as not to make any noise and stir the sleeping. I will dress quickly and quietly, leaving...

  1. Beautiful. I cast an eye over my lovely lady last night as she slept.  She’s properly dirty at the moment; this morning when I woke her she was a little grizzly, a little reluctant. Tomorrow, I shall strip her down and make her feel like a new lady agai… »

Before the New Year, it was my ride up Haleakala. At present, it’s Keepers Tour: Cobbled Classics 2013. Before Haleakala, it was one of the various Cyclocross races and before that the Zoo Hill Time Trial. The targets change, but throughout my life as a Velominatus, there always seems to be a goal looming over the horizon which spurs me on. T...

  1. @piwakawaka That’s pretty impressive training that made the bike lose weight too. ;) »

As a dyed-in-the-wool Northerner, my time living in the South was a mixed bag. Southerners think differently, speak differently, eat differently, and prioritize life differently than do Yankees. In many ways, I became a better person during my time in the South, learning to relax a little bit and stop chasing my tail over everything all the time...

Let’s talk about bikes. Yeah, bikes are good. After all, they are “the central tool to our craft.” They are the reason we became Velominati, the portal through which we travelled to this life. When we were kids, we saw a bike for the first time; we liked the look of it, and when we rode it our lives were changed forever. We didn&#...

  1. Tip on the iPad / iPhone photo upload – get the Photobucket app and a free account.  You can copy the image location and use that. Re the singly bike – this is not helping my desire to n+1 something old and classy.  Not one bit. »

There was no need for Rule #74 until the cyclometer showed up on our handlebars. According to the late Sheldon Brown, the cyclometer has been around since the early 1900s.“Star-wheel cyclometers, such as the Lucas unit, suffered two serious problems. They made an annoying “tink-tink-tink” noise. At high speeds, the star wheel would s...

  1. @eightzero And again for the record – I’ve decided I don’t need more bike shit. I need more time to ride my fucking bike. Amen to that. »
