Trying to suck just a little less each time.

@HMBSteve's activity:

White is a troublesome color; hard to keep clean. I have a white dress shirt that I never wear because even if I manage not to spill on the front of it, the cuffs and collar will look crap by the end of the day regardless. I mean, I can keep from eating something all day, but I can’t keep from drinking coffee or wine, and before very long som...

  1. @Frank – received my new kit last week in time for the Thanksgiving break. All is excellent, especially the gilet, which is without question the best piece of kit I own. Thanks for getting this sorted out. »

Many of us cyclist don’t go out on the bike for under an hour, at a minimum. What’s the point? It is barely a ride if it is not at least two hours on the bike. I need half an hour to convince myself maybe I do feel OK. After an hour, the first queries can go down to the engine room, is everything good down there? Some people feel better...

  1. Goggles – agreed; nothing like losing yourself in your ride. Once in a while, just stop and take it all in; then roll on again.  Below – the rewards of a three hour ride, leave the cities and the traffic behind.  @Nate and @Frank will recognize. »

Whenever you see one of those yellow cars or motorcycles laden with spare wheels and manned by efficiently deliberate young professionals with no allegiance or favour to any one rider, take a moment to reflect on the oft-overlooked pioneer of the neutral service as we know it today, M. Jacques Mavic.Usually only sighted once a year in July, Jacq...

@HMBSteve's posts:

  1. It is rumored that Jacques frequented the Carcassonne sperm bank to leave a deposit and receive his cash reward with which he pruchased Gauloise and Martell.  I am further led to believe the services of said sperm bank may have produced at least one U.S. … »

This article started off as a Reverence for the Camelbak Podium, and might still be, who knows, it’s late and my mind is scrambled. As often happens when searching for a suitable image for an article, tangents often appear from nowhere and derail the original train of thought. Soon one finds oneself careening out of control towards the only...

@HMBSteve's posts:

  1. Have posted a picture of this monstrosity before. At least he is flat-back riding. But tell me about the socks and short shorts?!? Then there is this cockamamie thing I wonder how hard you have to suck on this? »

It never gets easier, you just go faster. - Greg LeMond Rule #5 looms above the other Rules in terms of sheer relevance to Cycling; it is the fundamental building block upon which this sport is built. The Five is what drives us, it is the force that springs from a well that flows deep within each of us. It must be discovered, and then we learn...

@HMBSteve's posts:

  1. @frank – another typically excellent and reflective piece.  It seems almost axiomatic that the climbs never actually get easier if you are pursuing the V. We establish goals to get to the top faster than the last time or in a different gear or perhaps……. »

If Tony gets a flat or two and loses this time trial, bookies will be jumping off bridges into the Thames. It’s a lock, man, it’s a lock. There, it is now jinxed. You are welcome. Picking second through fifth will take some acumen. Will these be Vuelta riders or does that just hold true for the road race? Tony could have a jour sans. Co...

All hail, the Worlds are upon us. The time trials should be events where all VSP participants can rack up some decent points. Remove team tactics, national team versus trade team allegiances, using this event to train for another event, bonking and hanging onto team cars from the equation. All one is left with are possible flat tire, possible mecha...

I don’t mean to sound bitter, cold, or cruel, but I am, so that’s how it comes out. - Bill Hicks That famous quote from the Greatest Comedian Of All Time™ has resonated with me for many years. It became my silent mantra, as I don’t suffer fools gladly and sometimes don’t make much effort to conceal the fact. Lately, I̵...

  1. On his first appearance, if he offers to buy the first round of malted recovery bverages, then tolerate him. With each successive participation, discuss among the crew one of the Rules, starting with #43. Then simply apply #3 as @Nate suggests. »

Stupidity is a powerful force never to be underestimated. Geese are a good example; a more stupid vertebrate one would be most challenged to come across yet should you wander into a flock of them pecking about peacefully in a field, one is likely to erupt from its grazing to grab a billful of your ass and commence beating you savagely with it...

  2. @Nate Agreed; on the coast is fine – the real issues are in the inner bay around woodside, portola, etc.  Too many people, generally, all vying for the same airspace.  Bad recipe. Best to go where there are fewer cars for sure. »

  3. @frank – love the Urban Riding Tips.  In the SF Bay Area where you can’t swing a dead cat and not hit a cyclist, there is a decidedly love/hate relationship between the two camps.  While many of us follow these tips religiously, there are many cyclists wh… »

Summer is a time for getting fat. Winter is a time for getting fat as well, but in a different way; in Winter we get fat on meals of meat and potatoes covered in sauces made of meat and potatoes. In Summer, on the other hand, our minds get fat: we get nice tans, we tone our muscles, long days see us riding at any hour of the day that suits us. W...

  4. @Nate – Ha! I have seen some of your early morning rides. Maybe you were just a little bit asleep at the start. »

  6. @ShawnB – that’s as good a guess as any.  It is actually Higgins-Purisima in Half Moon Bay. »

  7. @frank – good read; conjures up many great and memorable rides. As you know from riding the Northern California Coast it rarely gets too cold or too hot here….unless you ride to the East or South Bay in July and August – @Nate’s territory. As I live on … »

@Nate’s take This year it was time for the Bay Area Cogal to visit my home turf in the East Bay. To make it more than just a long ride on roads I have ridden many times, and instigated by @EricW, the plan was to feature several sectors of dirt fire roads. A few scouting rides later, the route was planned. We rolled out on July 5 with @DaveR,...

@HMBSteve's posts:

  1. @Nate – great ride for all you guys.  Sorry I missed it.  Probably would have needed the grappling hook to latch on to your bike anyway.  Hope to ride with you soon. »

Brett’s recent post about Jensie brings up the dilemma of professional cycling for me. I admire many of cycling’s famous riders yet I don’t admire cheaters. Luckily for me I can fervently embrace opposable ideas within my consciousness and sleep well at night. Which also means I would have been one of those cheaters. I also see the tangle...

@HMBSteve's posts:

  1. @Gianni – thanks for posting this.  For me, it is no longer about dragging the sport down or flogging the cheaters; it is about celebrating the V in those who toughed it out.  Inga’s is a cautionary tale for any parent who has children with other role mod… »

Did everyone got tired of seeing a nearly naked Marcel Kittel on the massage table for the Tour’s VSP page? I know I didn’t. Young Kennaugh will be sporting his British road race jersey and his proper shoe/sock pairing in this Vuelta. Get used to it. Ladies and gentleman we have a race. Choice, or the perception of it, is one of the most powerful forces on Earth. The great secret lies in the locus of control, which suggests that if given the perception of a choice we will be more willing to endure hardship or suffering. We’ll suffer even for the promise of a future intangible reward so long as we feel we have a choice...
