Lifetime devotee to the Brotherhood of the Wheel. Breaking Away is the major influence of my life..have been a cyclist since my Dad and I saw the movie in the summer of '79. Started racing in 88, still do to this day, and have been a shop bike mechanic since 1991.

@Haldy's activity:

The darker months bring out the macabre in each of us; for Gianni it was the extinction of his beloved Park Tool adjustable clamp. For me, I found myself mourning the fact that I recently purchased a headset press. Ignoring the fact that a Velominatus of my stature didn’t already own one, the mourn behind the mourn is where the interest lies...

@Haldy's posts:

  1. @Bruce Lee Agreed…cartridge bearings that are replaced almost every other race. Why?..they empty out the grease and run them on oil. I have done the same thing for my track wheels for big events. But that’s not something the average guy can do on a re… »

We want to look like Pros, sure, but what we’re really after is feeling Pro. All the aesthetics are just a tool we use to fuel the fickle internal combustion engine of Morale. In the end, there is little that will make you feel Pro more than clattering along a stretch of cobbles in a small group; instant “select breakaway”. One...

  1. @Bruce Lee Ouch…Cartridge bearings are faster??….sorry..you got that one wrong. Loose ball systems have far less friction than cartridge bearings. Even the ceramic ones. The ceramic (sealed) bearings came along to try and compete with the smoothness… »

  2. @rfreese888 @rfreese888 That depends greatly on the level of ceramic bearing. The CULT bearings that Campy use in their current wheels required them to develop a special steel alloy bearing race because the bearings tore up the standard steel and alloy… »

White is a troublesome color; hard to keep clean. I have a white dress shirt that I never wear because even if I manage not to spill on the front of it, the cuffs and collar will look crap by the end of the day regardless. I mean, I can keep from eating something all day, but I can’t keep from drinking coffee or wine, and before very long som...

  1. @frank The computer is there so I can follow Rule #71. Sometimes I need the data to properly perform the workouts laid out by my coach. Remember him..the guy with the massive guns you saw at Alpenrose during your Festum Hour attempt. Electrical tape…… »

  2. You see the world too much in black and white…you need a little color in there…. »

Ever heard of Bert Oosterbosch? No, neither had I until I came across this excellent (and comprehensive) account from @ErikdR. A story of triumph and tragedy if ever there was one, everything you need to know about the Dutchman’s short career and ultimately, life, is laid out here. Give yourself some weekend reading time and enjoy. Yours in...

  1. @Buck Rogers I agree…go without glue. If you pre glue..then you have to make sure it dry..well dried before you fold it. Then..even then..on hot days it’s a bit of a mess to pull apart. As for tape..no…just no. I think that Rule #96 needs to be no … »

We just finished a thorough examination of the Cyclist’s marquee accoutrement, the Cycling Cap. Today’s lesson is about the Cycling Cap’s red-headed step brother, the Winter Cycling Cap.This is a toque born of necessity; the thin cotton cap is nowhere near warm enough for the demands of the Flemish winter training season. Form s...

  2. I’m genuinely stunned that no one has busted out this pic yet given the other Assos monstrosity that’s being passed around- »

One of the things that strikes me most about the English is they don’t appear to have developed any sort of “inner dialog”. It seems anything that passes through the brain is parlayed directly to the tongue; if the thought being expressed is an insult to you, it will generally include a query for confirmation: “You’r...

  1. @unversio I am at Bothell Ski and Bike, just a little north of Seattle. »

  2. @frank Can I put your phone number on speed dial on all the shop phones so we can call you during “emergency persuading” circumstances? I have a hardback copy of The Rules here at the shop to hit people over the head with. »

  3. @unversio It’s not for me that I look for these tires…it’s for the customers of the shop I work at, so…I am a bit loathe to turn them to other sources…I prefer they spend the $$$ in the shop that keeps me employed. :-) »

  4. @Chris Ha! Interesting point..had never really thought of it as possessive when using the apostrophe. Have always see Pave’ typed this way in all my communication with Vittoria since that’s how they type the singular and they type the plural as Pave’s. »

  5. @frank I completely agree…however I do have customers that are concerned that the green clashes with their bike( don’t get me started…), hence my search for the all black Pave’s.  But for me I have always and proudly run the Pave’s for Rule #9 seaso… »

  6. @TommyTubolare – I live here in the US of A, and Vittoria North America lists the tires as possible to order, but they never import them. I have seen them on the order sheets for years. My local walks in the door of the shop and right after saying “hi”, … »

  7. @Buck Rogers – To be honest…I like the green on the side better than on the center stripe. The green becomes more visible from all directions. Then more folks( assuming they are educated enough..I know..big assumption) can see you are rolling on Pave’s »

  8. @wilburrox Try getting your hands on the all black version. They are listed on inventory sheets, rps claim that they have seem them, but as yet..I have never laid eyes on the all black version of the Pave. My current ones have the green on the side. Vit… »

  9. @frank I will probably mount some FMB’s to next years race wheels..might even get some FMB tires to roll at the races on the track next year too. »

  10. @frank Very true. I await the completion of the frame before ordering up the gruppo. »

  11. @Walbly – Well…I do own a purple, yellow and orange bike…with Nemesis rims no less. These wheels will be going on a bike that will be pink/blue/black. The new team colors for next year. Here’s the Purple one- »

  12. @Buck Rogers Yes..Chris King goodness! »

  13. @antihero I hope you stabbed him repeatedly with his tire levers for such heresy! »

  14. I can’t wait to hear the hum from these…. »
