Velominatus: Haldy

Order: Level 1 Velominatus

Location: Mountlake Terrace, Wa

Lifetime devotee to the Brotherhood of the Wheel. Breaking Away is the major influence of my life..have been a cyclist since my Dad and I saw the movie in the summer of '79. Started racing in 88, still do to this day, and have been a shop bike mechanic since 1991.

@Haldy's activity:

We just finished a thorough examination of the Cyclist’s marquee accoutrement, the Cycling Cap. Today’s lesson is about the Cycling Cap’s red-headed step brother, the Winter Cycling Cap.This is a toque born of necessity; the thin cotton cap is nowhere near warm enough for the demands of the Flemish winter training season. Form s...

  1. Or since we have the brimless Andy H. pic….I feel obliged to add- »

  2. I’m genuinely stunned that no one has busted out this pic yet given the other Assos monstrosity that’s being passed around- »

One of the things that strikes me most about the English is they don’t appear to have developed any sort of “inner dialog”. It seems anything that passes through the brain is parlayed directly to the tongue; if the thought being expressed is an insult to you, it will generally include a query for confirmation: “You’r...

  1. @unversio I am at Bothell Ski and Bike, just a little north of Seattle. »

  2. @frank Can I put your phone number on speed dial on all the shop phones so we can call you during “emergency persuading” circumstances? I have a hardback copy of The Rules here at the shop to hit people over the head with. »

  3. @unversio It’s not for me that I look for these tires…it’s for the customers of the shop I work at, so…I am a bit loathe to turn them to other sources…I prefer they spend the $$$ in the shop that keeps me employed. :-) »

  4. @Chris Ha! Interesting point..had never really thought of it as possessive when using the apostrophe. Have always see Pave’ typed this way in all my communication with Vittoria since that’s how they type the singular and they type the plural as Pave’s. »

  5. @frank I completely agree…however I do have customers that are concerned that the green clashes with their bike( don’t get me started…), hence my search for the all black Pave’s.  But for me I have always and proudly run the Pave’s for Rule #9 seaso… »

  6. @TommyTubolare – I live here in the US of A, and Vittoria North America lists the tires as possible to order, but they never import them. I have seen them on the order sheets for years. My local walks in the door of the shop and right after saying “hi”, … »

  7. @Buck Rogers – To be honest…I like the green on the side better than on the center stripe. The green becomes more visible from all directions. Then more folks( assuming they are educated enough..I know..big assumption) can see you are rolling on Pave’s »

  8. @wilburrox Try getting your hands on the all black version. They are listed on inventory sheets, rps claim that they have seem them, but as yet..I have never laid eyes on the all black version of the Pave. My current ones have the green on the side. Vit… »

  9. @frank I will probably mount some FMB’s to next years race wheels..might even get some FMB tires to roll at the races on the track next year too. »

  10. @frank Very true. I await the completion of the frame before ordering up the gruppo. »

  11. @Walbly – Well…I do own a purple, yellow and orange bike…with Nemesis rims no less. These wheels will be going on a bike that will be pink/blue/black. The new team colors for next year. Here’s the Purple one- »

  12. @Buck Rogers Yes..Chris King goodness! »

  13. @antihero I hope you stabbed him repeatedly with his tire levers for such heresy! »

  14. I can’t wait to hear the hum from these…. »

  15. ..and the Prophet seems to channel plenty of V at high cadence…. I feel like there is a Rule #10 reference in here somewhere too… »

  16. It’s all about being smooth Frank…smooth application of power…at many many RPMS. :-) Ironic that you posted this today in that I just switched my Walker off of the clinchers to a set of my Golden Tickets with… »

Doing things the hard way is a luxury. It says to the world that we’ve beat evolution; intelligence is no match for technology and economy is no match for indulgence. We need only step a bit outside our bubble to realize the scale of the illusion, but nevertheless it has become reality for many of us who live our lives happily and fortuna...

  1. @frank I have been pondering this for a bit since we briefly discussed it( and since I have been gluing a bunch of nice tires/wheels at work lately), and it falls in under doing things the “hard” or maybe Proper way..I think we need to have an addition t… »

I have a huge capacity for watching bike racing on TV. I’ll watch hours of it even when nothing is really happening. I’m certainly not bragging. So I’m quite certain I could sit in the cramped, possibly smokey, noisy, Gent velodrome and watch an evening of six-day racing. I bet the ratio of men to women (who actually want to be th...

  1. Yeah… as a dedicated trackie I would love to see a 6-Day in person. Thankfully internet streaming allows me to watch a few of them live as they happen. »

The Bike. It is the central tool in pursuit of our craft. A Velominatus meticulously maintains their bicycles and adorns them with the essential, yet minimal, accoutrement. The Rules specify the principles of good taste in configuration and setup of our machines, but within those principles lies almost infinite room for personal taste. It seems in s...

  1. @Teocalli I think the rule applies when the wheels are mounted on a bicycle, not when sitting alone. Besides..I aligned them this way so that one Golden Ticket and the FMB label could be seen with the background of the wall. Wasn’t sure the phone camer… »

  2. Okay..not a full bike yet..but this is what we are building it upon…. »

To keep chickens is to walk a path towards introspection. From the songs they sing after laying an egg (which I assume is “chicken” for “I’m Every Woman“) to the sheer glee they show when they find a worm in the mud, chickens provide a perfect example of living life in and for the moment. The most interesting aspect o...

  1. @The Grande Fondue I am not sure @frank will agree these bars count as Belgian style, since the confound him so…he is always giving me crap about my using them. I absolutely love them though. Sure wish I had Cam Meyers turn of speed though… »

  2. @frank So…much awesome… V-ness in these pics…. »

  3. @frank – I’m shocked you forgot this pic- »
