Gent (Deinze)-Wevelgem, it starts with 130 km of cruising around Belgium and Northern France followed by a flurry of bergs and then a final 38 km of  flatter riding to the inevitable sprint finish. How hard can the climbing be if Super Mario got over them? Ask the riders from KT 2012, (the ones not in the following car) and they will tell you...

The Ride. It is the cathedral of our sport, where we worship at the altar of the Man with the Hammer. It is the end to our means. Indeed, The Bike may be the central tool to our sport, but to turn the pedals is to experience the sensation of freedom, of flight. It is all for The Ride. The world is overflowing with small, twisty roads that capture ou...

  1. Celebrated turning 61 yesterday with a 61 mile ride. And by an amazing stroke of luck there was a brewpub just as I rolled over th 61st mile. »

  1. This Cogal will be run over my favorite roads, found through kilometer-after-kilometer of riding and joyful experimentation. It’ll be a twisting ride through the northern unit of the Kettle Moraine – an area shaped millions of years ago by glaciers – lots of ridges and undulating roads. We’ll ride on very few main roads so group riding should be fine. It has also been designed to eliminate any traffic lights from the route. The Cogal has been designed with an eye to good surfaces, lack of traffic, picturesque nature and a route that will mitigate any nasty winds. There will be some flats, but much of the route is rolling with quite few little steep bergs to test the legs. There will be various rest stops along the way at gas stations for refueling; the first at around 60 kms, thereafter every 25-30 kms.

Fitness. The rhythm, the feeling of precision in our movement, the sensations of The Ride. The temptation of knowing we might in some way control our suffering even as we push harder in spite of the searing pain in our legs and lungs. The notion that through suffering, we might learn something rudimentary about ourselves – that we might f...

  1. @wiscot I’ve been riding a road bike for just over a year and never considered riding in the rain and cold. Was surprised how much I enjoyed it. Did get some looks from passing cars. »
