47 years young, loving husband, devoted father of two fabulous young boys, totally untalented but slightly obsessive cyclist since rediscovering the joy of the bike a few years ago. I work in the pharmaceutical industry but no, I'm not a drug dealer (as I was introduced at a party once) and no I can't hook you up with some EPO (I've been asked).

@Mike_p's activity:

The Bike. It is the central tool in pursuit of our craft. A Velominatus meticulously maintains their bicycles and adorns them with the essential, yet minimal, accoutrement. The Rules specify the principles of good taste in configuration and setup of our machines, but within those principles lies almost infinite room for personal taste. It seems in s...

Did everyone got tired of seeing a nearly naked Marcel Kittel on the massage table for the Tour’s VSP page? I know I didn’t. Young Kennaugh will be sporting his British road race jersey and his proper shoe/sock pairing in this Vuelta. Get used to it. Ladies and gentleman we have a race. We have some Giro winners, we have some Tour...

  2. I think the best thing about yesterday’s stage was the sound of King Kelly on Eurosport clearly trying not to piss himself laughing when he was talking about the handbags at dawn moment.  Classic. As for Bertie.  Sorry, not normal IMHO. »

The modern day Pro cyclist has many disadvantages stacked against them by comparison to their forefathers. They have to ride plastic bikes with little or no distinguishing character or discernible caché; they must willingly or perhaps unwittingly subject their body to an array of questionable “training techniques”; and they have to sp...

  1. @Deakus Wow, that is such a lesson in how to be Deliberately Casual.  I agree with you Deakus; I can almost imagine that as a black and white image from yesteryear.  He’s probably got Hugo Koblet’s comb in his jersey pocket.  Certainly showing some of … »

  2. @Chris I had the very unfortunate experience of coming face to face with a bloke in that lederhosen abomination in Italy recently.  Even more scarily, he probably weighed in at a little over 18 stone.  That coupled with his Project One Madone certainly ma… »

Jens Voigt is set to retire as we speak, having one final crack at a long break in some race in the Cycling backwater of the USA. Is it fair or fitting that he should go out like this, slipping out the back door with little fanfare, while others have been doing a farewell tour of all the big races, replete with fancy commemorative shoes and a son...

  1. @wiscot +1 for the VSP idea.  I think we’re all going to be stoked for it and rooting for him (oops, I almost sound Murican). Like everyone else, I’m just surprised. »

  2. @Rob …until he announces Ondrej Sosenka is “coaching” him ?!   I suspect Sir Bradley is sitting somewhere rolling his eyes and being a bit “sweary” this afternoon.  As for Faboo, well he’ll just be whinging, as usual these days. »

  3. @Puffy Oh no he’s not!  Just when we thought it was safe, he’s only decided to go for The Hour!  I shit you not….. http://app.bronto.com/public/?q=preview_message&fn=Link&id=7854jrgel8vjepr0ivbzyr41ldb59&ssid=31334&t=3 »

  1. Just back from two weeks holiday so thought I’d best check I can still get on to the community and through the security.  I’ve got to say, two weeks with maybe 30 minutes total internet access has been almost as liberating as riding my bike. »

  2. @xyxax ^^^ Gold.  It must be Friday. Joking aside, I know Frank has got a lot on his plate these days. It’s quite a juggling act he manages to do, so I can’t get animated about the spam. »

Choice, or the perception of it, is one of the most powerful forces on Earth. The great secret lies in the locus of control, which suggests that if given the perception of a choice we will be more willing to endure hardship or suffering. We’ll suffer even for the promise of a future intangible reward so long as we feel we have a choice...

  2. Bloody Hell @Frank, you’ve been brewing that one up for a while.  That’s a really beautiful piece. The more pain I can endure when I’m training, the more I know I’ll enjoy the simple pleasures of just riding tempo for a few hours. Suffering is still ther… »

  2. Folks, some advice please…. When I punctured the other day, I found that my latex tube had almost adhered itself to the inside of the tire and needed kind of peeling away.  I’d talc’d it when I fitted them a few weeks earlier.  Maybe I hadn’t used enou… »

I bought a Road ID the day I learned of Jon Lennard’s death on August 12, 2013. Someone in the posts of the original announcement of his passing (below) mentioned he was identified by his Road ID. We are the Keepers of the Cog. In so being, we also maintain the sacred text wherein lie the simple truths of cycling etiquette known as The Rules. It is in our trust to maintain and endorse this list. The Rules lie at the beginning of The Path to La Vie Velominatus, not at the end; learning to balance them against one another and to welcome them...

It’s no coincidence that Stage Five of the Tour was not only the best one to watch, or that it helped decide the race before nary a hill was crested, but that it was just, well, Stage Five. Only last minute copyright clearances prevented the organisers actually dubbing it Stage V, though they managed to get the rain delivered on time, an ess...

The Whale Shark is the biggest nonmammalian vertebrate* on the planet, rivaling the dinosaurs for size. How do you feed yourself when you’re that huge without loading up on carbs all the time? Easy, you swim around with your mouth wide open for 22 hours a day and hope enough food swims in there to take the edge off the hunger pangs. Attention all Velominati. The Tour VSP is going on line and it should be a good one. Sure, between Froomy and Bertie a person could hedge their bets but Moviestar is all in for Valverde, BMC for TeeJay, Astana for the Shark and Garmin is finally committing to a team leader in Talansky. Some other teams (ahem…Trek Factory Racing for one) have...
