Back on the bike after 25 years of gradschoolkidsworkmarriagedivorcelotsofboozerunningrockclimbingflyfishing and, now, a partner who loves to ride. Even in my youth I was never more than a Cat 4 who was Too Fat To Climb, but now at 50 I've rediscovered the transcendence of time spent in the saddle.

I think it would be hard for anyone to make the case that Eddy Merckx was Roger de Vlaeminck’s Cycling Sensei, but I think we can all agree that De Vlaeminck was a student of Merckx, if only a student of his domination. But every student at some point becomes the master, and the driven student will always challenge the Order of Things.Eve...

White is a troublesome color; hard to keep clean. I have a white dress shirt that I never wear because even if I manage not to spill on the front of it, the cuffs and collar will look crap by the end of the day regardless. I mean, I can keep from eating something all day, but I can’t keep from drinking coffee or wine, and before very long som...

I’m trying my best to stay thin this winter, but I’m nowhere near where I was when it was warm and the days were long. I keep flashing back to the last time I felt genuinely skinny and declared to myself, “This time, I’ll keep it off!”This photo is a metaphor. Winter me is on the right, Summer me is on the left. Mi...

The darker months bring out the macabre in each of us; for Gianni it was the extinction of his beloved Park Tool adjustable clamp. For me, I found myself mourning the fact that I recently purchased a headset press. Ignoring the fact that a Velominatus of my stature didn’t already own one, the mourn behind the mourn is where the interest lies...

Look Folks, on 18JUN2015 a bunch of us are going to head out from Portland, Maine at V:0V in the “A.M.” and ride all fucking day long to Burlington, Vermont, probably arriving near-to-after dark.

This is a Redux of the 200-on-100 that we rolled in June 2012 which was one of the most physically challenging and mentally tough things that I have ever done in my life. Brutally awesome and I am feeling the need to ride something EPIC this next year.

As of right now this is a get your own ass to Portland and ride completely-bloody-committed because there is no support for this puppy but the Two Massive Guns of Steel that you see when you look down every day. That is unless, of course, you are too fat to see them when you look down. In that case you have one of two choices: Either lose that gut or don’t show up because this is a compete DROP ride. No way that one can wait for someone else on a ride of this magnitude.

I am planning on showing up with a few fellow V members that I know are of a similar ability level. We are planning on staying together for at least the first 150 to 200 k’s. If you want to make similar arrangements, that’s cool, but do not plan on everyone singing kumbaya and waiting for your sorry ass if you cannot hold the line. Not being cruel here but being realistic. On the 200-on-100 we all started together and broke into MANY sub-groups and never saw each other for the entire 12 to 15 hours.

For the route we will be riding the reverse of the 200(Not)-on-100 that T. King/Johnson and Kelly did in 2012.

So, dust off your rollers, break out the winter parka, stop making NancyBoy excuses and channel your inner Leonard Smalls because the training for this fucker started yesterday!
