Order: Orange Order Velominatus

Turning the cranks, one day at a time.

@Ron's activity:

In most situations, silence is an ominous thing that signals impending doom. Having never been in any danger myself, I base this largely on my experience watching box-office movies. As a general rule, I use Hollywood as the principal source of information on all subjects as they relate to doom and politics, principally because I’m loath t...

  1. Frank – grease the spacers. I’ve cleaned my cassettes but never done this. Grease whether plastic or metal or just metal? A light coating of a general lube? I don’t think something like the Park Tool grease would make the chain/cogs that happy. I guess if… »

The Bike. It is the central tool in pursuit of our craft. A Velominatus meticulously maintains their bicycles and adorns them with the essential, yet minimal, accoutrement. The Rules specify the principles of good taste in configuration and setup of our machines, but within those principles lies almost infinite room for personal taste.It seems in s...

  1. Just picked up a set of LOOK Keo Blade pedals, looking forward to testing them out. I’ve ridden Sprints and Max 2s, eager to see how these ride/feel. Also switched from white pedals to black on the #1. Amazing how a small change can make the entire bike … »

Twiggo is dreaming of a Giro-Tour double. He has sent out mixed messages about his Tour ambitions. Will he use the Giro as the ultimate Tour preparation or will be burn all his matches in May and hope he can find another pack for July? He has abandoned his successful 2012 Tour run-up strategy of winning every stage race he entered the previous spri...

  1. Hmm, looks as if Phinney has abandoned. Nice stage today, wanted to see Niemiec win. I wonder how many Polish Giro stage winners there have been? »

  1. Lots of sound advice here. I guess it’s my mindset – all rides are different. Some are leg stretchers, some are mind relaxers, some are Meeting the Man with the Hammer. If I take a break over 5 minutes during a ride my legs take a very long time to get g… »

  2. @frank Cool! I thought I was the only one. Feel much better now that I have a nice support group sag wagon! I guess that is the key – are you out riding just to ride or are you out to train, push, inspire, test yourself? I forgot to consider this. I gu… »

  3. I’m content to ride clinchers, for now, but someday I will make the move to tubulars. Something to dream about for the time being. A wonderful piece to keep me dreamin’, Frank. I have had lots of problems with my newest wheelset. Thankfully I at least ha… »

Bicycles and automobiles- can’t we all just get along? @Kah writes about this universal (do aliens have this issue also?) problem of us co-existing with humans in cars. We all drive cars too and have cursed the occasional cyclists for some good reason. Cars are our greatest threat. We can crawl away from our own bicycle crashes, thanks very m...

  1. That little shoulder jacket looks like mini denim jackets that are/were? in style. I rarely can resist making a laundry mishap joke when I’m around someone wearing a half denim jacket. »

  2. Yup, I’m all for a balance of safety & style. When I’m on my townie/commuter though my equation for style/safety changes a whole lot. It’s much more about function, whereas when I’m really out cycling on a road bike, I gotta keep style in mind. Bike… »

  1. Wow, weird. I can’t imagine many saw it coming. Both Wiggins and Ryder DNFs? What about Cavendish’s sprinting the past two days. Yesterday he seemed to be “closing the door” but did he move around too much? It almost seemed like with yesterday he was so … »

We close out the 6 Days of the Giro with our sixth and final installment.A body at rest, stays at rest. A body in motion, stays in motion. Things get a bit more ambiguous when it comes to a body on a bicycle tearing down a twisty mountain descent at speed, particularly in the rain. But it is here, on the boundary between clarity and ambiguity, wher...

  1. My god, Frank. What a final statement. One guy jumps back on, one guy rides on tires of glass. I watched that live and was amazed at the crashes, the jump backs, and the reaction of Nibali V. Wiggins. That right there sums it up: why is one Descendeur bet… »

  2. @Chris Hmm, very nice here, Chris. I’ll work on this and try it out the next time I’m cyclin’, which will be tomorrow. I’ll test my legs, then my brain + eyes. Should be fun! »

  3. Senor Harminator – That was incredible! Thank you for sharing. One thing I really, really dig about this place is that it stokes my love of cycling, yet opens me to new sports. Hi-Speed Moto, mountaineering, rock climbing, skiing, et cetera. Seeing “that … »

  4. I’m embarrassed to admit it, but I only recently realized the inside hand/outside foot pressure technique makes things much, much easier. My corner has gotten significantly better since I’ve focussed on those two things. And not having much of an off-roa… »

  5. I really love going downhill as fast as possible. It’s one of those things that as soon as I’m finished I want to try it again because I know I can correct some errors, or go a bit faster through certain corners. Descendeur-ing always has me wanting to g… »

I’ve been a fan of Danilo Di Luca a long time, and to tell the truth, was much more suspect of Menchov’s performance at the Giro than I was of Di Luca’s; Menchov rode the last few days of the Giro like it was a Sunday spin, while Di Luca seemed to visibly tire with each attack.  It’s always a shame when a rider I like tests...

@Ron's posts:

  1. Let’s bring this into the double-digits. Di Luca still riding strong a few years late. Huh. Makes you wonder about the residual effect on the body of doping. Also, how about the crazy new drug that a few guys have been nabbed for, the one with just lett… »

Day 5 of the Six Days of the Giro continues with an impromptu VSP event.Lets have a look at where we are in the 2013 Giro. Wiggins must have spent time training in Luxembourg because he’s been descending like a Schleck when things get dodgy before disappearing into the team van to have a cry about it. Hesjedal has put in some good moves and...

  1. Who the hell is the Lampre rider sporting the crazy mustache and Dumbo ears on Sunday? I can’t be the only one who saw him, looked more like a pirate (not that one) than a cyclist. I think I saw him again today and the Urstache was gone… Ha, that’s a t… »

  2. A lot of folks getting Ronned up here. Don’t be afraid to read the Rules, then the VSP Rules, and then don’t get too worked up. Reeelax, we’re all still Followers. »

  3. Well damn, I let the legs get heavy with the rest day and forgot to get my picks in for this stage. Shite. Yup, definitely liking Betancur on this one, maybe he can actually celebrate a win, not a second place… »

We’re into day four of the Six Days of the Giro series, let’s talk trash. Yes the Tour de France started a few years before the Giro and has always been credited as The Tour to win. You win the Giro, you are a stud. Win the Tour and you are a stud for life. Why is that? Is the Tour longer, tougher, more murderous, more beautiful? In the 20...

@Ron's posts:

  1. Damn, Hampsten’s sock/shoe combo was pretty impressive. I didn’t even pick up on the titles on RAI being in English. Damn, I guess I’ve been watching the racers too closely. So…what exactly does “corredore” mean? Also, the stage when Rabotini won after… »

  2. Also, where the heck has John Gadret gone? I haven’t heard that dude’s name in awhile… »

  3. I think Tiralongo is wondering why the hell he decided to carry overshoes, leg warmers, and a gilet all the way up that goddamn mountain. Also, the woman on the roadside in the black & white photo. My gosh! They don’t make ‘em like they used to. »

  4. A bit off topic, but hey… Visiting the in-laws and they have an insanely large television with the standard amount of stations in the U.S., something like 300 of them. I don’t own a t.v. I watch cycling as often as I can via my computer, I watch some m… »

  5. The Giro is easier to like for me – I’m Italian, I own a Casati and a Tommasini, and I’ve been to Italy, though to play futbol, not ride bikes. But hey, hard not to like Le Tour. It gets everyone talking about cycling, which is pretty cool. Then again, y… »

We continue our Six Days of the Giro series with a look at the troubled bond between Marco Pantani and the Giro.Some were meant to be tormented, as though it were preordained that their brilliance should be balanced with fatal flaws. These are tortured souls, whose dramatic highs are equalled only by the devastating depths of their lows. Continu...

  1. Ah, that’s what I was looking for, Frank. I agree as well, like the square-ish shape, don’t like the “shapey” lines. That’s kind of how I feel about my ~2007 Centaur crankset. I don’t mind the rings, but the cranks have the shapey thing going on. I reall… »
