The race of the funny hat.Every team seems to have included one or two riders fresh off the Tour. One would either feel ruined or unbeatable a week after that slug fest, more than likely, ruined. I imagine there are a few riders dodging calls from their directors this week. Continue reading...

  1. UUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHHGGGGGGHHHHHH. This race is tailor-made for two riders, Dan Martin and Peter Sagan. Which mean’s it isn’t tailor-made, exactly but close enough. We’re not talking bespoke, FFS. So…………Pedro is tired from a Tour in which he overpla… »

It’s no coincidence that Stage Five of the Tour was not only the best one to watch, or that it helped decide the race before nary a hill was crested, but that it was just, well, Stage Five. Only last minute copyright clearances prevented the organisers actually dubbing it Stage V, though they managed to get the rain delivered on time, an ess...

  1. VV Dam is possibly the best nickname in recent memory. I hope one of us Keeper dingbats has the sense to put that in the Lexicon. That is solid gold! Bretto, this is your best piece yet. This is going into the scrapbook: »

The Whale Shark is the biggest nonmammalian vertebrate* on the planet, rivaling the dinosaurs for size. How do you feed yourself when you’re that huge without loading up on carbs all the time? Easy, you swim around with your mouth wide open for 22 hours a day and hope enough food swims in there to take the edge off the hunger pangs. 2. @tessar Sounds like a Delta, which does actually brake as well…its just that they were a massive pain in the ass to adjust right. But if they were, they worked fantastically well. Even for people who couldn’t get them adjusted right, they worked fin… »

No technology can increase the energy of the willpower of the rider, nor can it lessen the doubts which sometimes overwhelm him. - Bernard HinaultAs I swung off the main road, I was momentarily consumed by the simple thrill of my tires leaving the hard tarmac and hitting the rough gravel of the unpaved forest road. It was a brief distraction of the...

  1. @Owen I’ve never used Sora, but the Shimano 105 that I bought using my summer chore money after 7th grade (more years ago than I care to admit) is still in use in my stable and I agree: it tends to work better than much of my top of the line gear. Wel… »

  3. @Zman Only on the bad days, but that’s when you need a strong mind more than ever! @KW Sometimes I think that the better my gear has gotten, the slow I ride. @unversio Nice one! »

  4. @Ccos It always amazes me when you toe up to a ride and you spot the chubby guy who you figure will go out the back the moment the road points uphill. And then when the road goes uphill he drops you. @imakecircles I’ve never heard that before, but … »

  5. @piwakawaka Hinault has another quote that I can’t seem to track down to the effect that whenever he was really suffering, he’d go on the attack so no one could see how bad he was. Sounds like you’re taking a page out of the right book! Then there’s a… »

It has been many years (25!) since professional female cyclists have raced on the cobbles of the Champs Elysées. While running the Giro Donne concurrently with the Tour de France makes no sense to me, this Sunday’s women’s race does make sense. It should be the model for a Women’s Tour de France: the route, infrastructure, roadsi...

Attention all Velominati. The Tour VSP is going on line and it should be a good one. Sure, between Froomy and Bertie a person could hedge their bets but Moviestar is all in for Valverde, BMC for TeeJay, Astana for the Shark and Garmin is finally committing to a team leader in Talansky. Some other teams (ahem…Trek Factory Racing for one) have...

  1. Well, that does it for this year’s Tour. What a race, I really loved this whole thing soup to nuts. As for the VSP GC, lets see what we’ve got here after La Course and Le Tour’s points are added in: 2014 VSP G.C.1. il muro di manayunk (144 points) 2. fr… »

  2. @wiscot I agree on all counts here. I’d also like to point out that I hated Contador’s Giro win mostly because I never liked him as a rider. I also didn’t like Nibble’s Giro win – it felt boring. But somehow, I’m loving this win of his even though it’… »
