One of the finest things about Velominati is it attracts the crazy bastards. Cyclists are slightly unhinged anyway but there are more than a few out there who have no fear. Crazy is not constrained by nationality. Crazy knows no borders. Sure the Randonneurs would do this just to make sure they were happy with their choice of headlamp strap but @ba...

  1. Great ride, and great inspiration for riding beyond the home town loops! Thank you for sharing us those moments! BTW: Good choice of music! »

When you’re a kid, riding with your hands off the bars is something done for thrills, for style, and to impress chicks. As an older, wiser Velominatus, it can be a handy maneuvre to aid removing or donning extra clothing, taking a feed from your pockets, and to impress women (because that’s how adults refer to chicks). Get it right and...

  1. Far away of being a pro riding no hands I also made the experience, that some bikes work better for that task then others. On most bikes it works okay for me but not on my SLC01 for whatever reason. So with this one I try to do the task one handed, and if… »

We are the Keepers of the Cog. In so being, we also maintain the sacred text wherein lie the simple truths of cycling etiquette known as The Rules. It is in our trust to maintain and endorse this list. The Rules lie at the beginning of The Path to La Vie Velominatus, not at the end; learning to balance them against one another and to welcome them...

  1. Maybe Rule #17 should be extended for Event/Finisher jerseys: Don’t wear any Event/Finisher jerseys during another race. Wear those jerseys just when you really have participated AND finished them! »

An ancient Velominati legend states that when the The Prophet created the common fly, he gave it a maximum air speed of exactly 12 kilometers per hour. When he created the common Cyclist, on the other hand, he gave us a maximum climbing speed of 11.9 kilometers per hour. The worst flies on the planet live in the Pyrenees, where it is hot and humid...

  1. When I climbed the Bieler Höhe in Austria this year I was in the 8-9kph section, which was as slow to invite flies to sit on my handlebar! »

It is so deeply entangled at this point, I can no longer tell the threads from one another. The strands once ran cleanly from one bicycle to the next, linking a discrete sequence of events, considerations, wants, and desires. But then, 15 years ago, a strong force entered my life and I was forced to find alternate means of justifying the acquisitio...

  1. Thanks for the article! Myself is in a pretty comfortable position, even married to a non-cyclist! So far I was always able to get approvals for all new bikes and parts! But there is a nice story to tell: Last fall I was thinking about a Cyclocross mach… »

Aside from wheels staying in one piece and the frame holding together, the thing we take most for granted when riding a bike is how our bodies instinctively respond to and absorb bumps. The human body is, in fact, an incredible shock-absorber; our arms and legs are capable of flexing and shifting in ways that no mechanical suspension is capable of...

  1. Thanks for the article. Commuting very early at the day means for me to use lights on my bike almost all over the year. For sure in the summer some flashlights are enough. But as soon the nights are longer I am in the need of “a full set” of light. Afte… »

When it comes to weight and body dysmorphia, we cyclists can go toe-to-toe with any thirteen year old tween who has done their time flipping through the pages of Vogue and Sixteen. However fit and thin we might be, at some point it dawns on us that we’re not as light as we could be. The obvious solution is to buy lighter parts for our bikes,...

  1. well, had the same problem es well several years ago: for almost a year I could do everything and nothing happened with my weight. then I was thinking not just about the “how many” (sport & food) but also about the “when”. maybe that can help!? but i… »
