Order: Level 1 Velominatus

I like riding bikes. Both fast and for fun. As a youngster I del'd the Pittsburgh Post Gazette 6 days/wk riding a cool 10 speed Ross. I saved enough to get a cool 12 speed Schwinn Voyageur that I rode to campus every day at U of Pittsburgh. I still ride that bike. Regret I waited far too long to get in to racing. So, I had much fun racing as an old man beginner CAT 5 (I did cat up in '14) and also mtn bikes and riding year round in AL. Cheers, Randy C

We want to look like Pros, sure, but what we’re really after is feeling Pro. All the aesthetics are just a tool we use to fuel the fickle internal combustion engine of Morale. In the end, there is little that will make you feel Pro more than clattering along a stretch of cobbles in a small group; instant “select breakaway”. One...

  1. @Harminator I’m gonna patiently wait until the US$ is on par or better with the Euro and my Benjamins will carry some weight across the pond. Two more years and this little trip will cost a lot less on a US$ basis. In meantime, a new gruppo, HED Stinger… »

Cyclocross could be the most perplexing of all the cycling disciplines. To me it’s  at once the most beautiful and the most unappealing. The beauty comes from the great European races, and of course by ‘European’ I mean ‘Belgian’. The lack of appeal stems from the fact that I just don’t want to do it. It looks...

  1. Couldn’t resist this old post… @VeloSix I swear it’s gotta be the meth rush addiction of cycling… a friggen blast   @gaswepass Every bit of that. @VeloVita Indeed ! @anthony I’m with ya on that! Cheers all »

It doesn’t take a genius to see what’s going on here. Rule #5, Rule #9, Rule #10; every rider in this frame Looks Fantastic (most other Rules). The riders are in short sleeves and shorts while the public apparently has scavenged materials from rubbish bins and the local grain elevator in a very visually unpleasant effort to keep war...

  1. @frank Tried to get a close up look at the orange banded chronograph but couldn’t make out what it was. For the longest time I’d simply kept the watch while on the bike to the good ol’ good ol’ ironman watch but lately I’ve left been less particular abo… »

  1. @teleguy57 Man that strap looks like it’s about to slice your ear off at the lobe! I am so particular about straps not touching my ears it’s enough to drive me nuts on a long ride if they do. And if I have to adjust my helmet because of a hat underneath… »

One of the things that strikes me most about the English is they don’t appear to have developed any sort of “inner dialog”. It seems anything that passes through the brain is parlayed directly to the tongue; if the thought being expressed is an insult to you, it will generally include a query for confirmation: “You’r...

  1. Hey all, re: Vittoria Pave’s…when I first started riding ‘em they had the green stripe down the middle. Now they come with the green sidewall. And, I’ve recently noticed, they also care available in all black. That’s news to me ’cause if they’ve always … »

  1. @campbellrae1 What a gorgeous bike. Or at least the foundation for the bike. I have to respect the commitment of $$ and the planning/thinking/creativity necessary to have a bike like this created. Someday… Major props due ya, Cheers »

  2. @Ron My beater cross bike for the season, and what a hoot it’s been: Not as cool as a made in the US of A Van Dessel for sure. Still, I’m getting full utility value and big grins from the ol’ hard tail. Cheers! »

  3. @Mikael Liddy all right, all right… Good point. I’d have never suggested to kixsand a Cannondale kit is just the ticket to go with his new ride. Cannondale kits are fugly.  And I wouldn’t suggest to chrismurphy92 that a black and white Rapha Classic jer… »

  4. @Mikael Liddy I agree, it would look good on that bike. But not as good as the Giant-Shimano kit. That’s what I’d wear every now and then if I were riding that very good looking black and white Giant bike. The whole don’t wear a pro team kit? Even if i… »

  5. @piwakawaka Many moons ago and before I’d stumbled on to this site and the rules I noted some cat showed up at a local race in full Sky team kit and didn’t exactly rep well. I thought that the team kit thing probably wasn’t a really good idea. I have to… »

Sharing the road with cars is mostly a losing proposition. It’s hard to share when your vehicle weighs 8 kgs and the other guy’s is 800 kgs. If we have to share we have to let go and that is not easy, as @Kevin Wilkins explains. Yours in Cycling, Gianni Continue reading...

  6.   I’ll stick with AL for racing. In part because if I’m gonna be dropped, lapped, whatev, I do not want to be that cat with the pricey C ride getting his a** kicked. Mtn bike? That needs to be C. Especially for racing. Crit race? Alloy is just fine. »

  7. @Buck Rogers I can say this: the CAAD10 or Allez w/105 group san running around US$1600 with deals to be had soon enough on remaining ’14 models I’d guess are as good as anything else available around this cost. These are AL alloy bike frames designed a… »

  8. @PanzerPuss Instead of spending $$ on the entry C frame (and I’m with ChrisO on his thoughts there) get the 105 group, some Conti four seasons and a good jacket and then ride the wheels off your bike this winter ! That would be a solid investment in time … »
