Do I wear the threadbare bibs or do I wear the colored bibs? (the black are threadbare from being worn the most). This is also only temporary, as I’ll replace the black bibs as soon as possible. Then order shall be restored. In the meantime, I need a Ruling…

You have been warned Ron, don’t expect a second one to be so nice. Bin the black ones asap. No one ever needs to see a man’s crack up close especially for a long time. There is a Rule about this but I can’t find it. I will and point it out. Much better to wear fucked up pink short shorts than black see-through ones. Veddy bad juju there.

Suck it up sweet heart and throw out those bibs!

I think it’s part of the BS nonsense where one’s life is dictated by trying to live as “ironically” as possible at all moments.

Yes. I believe they call themselves hipsters. Dressing gentlemanly whilst covering oneself in copious exposed tattoos also calls to the irony you speak of. Some of it I think is cool actually, but I’m ironically trying to live my life, whilst being a complete fuck up, so ironically I am probably even more hip than the hipsters in this regard..

Very serious question regarding the Rules – my VMH has informed me that my favorite bibs are getting a bit threadbare just above the chamois in the aft. Indeed, the Lycra is a bit thin there upon inspection. Not good.

Budgetatus levels do not allow for a replacement of these bibs, which are black, at the moment. However, I also have them in colors. Relax, I like colorful clothes but would never wear the colored bibs with The V-jersey I have, or on a group ride, just for solo training.

Wear a black base layer, or black singlet, that goes down to above the chamois. That should do until replacement bib is available.

Or say you’re riding to Burning Man!

Didn’t make me miss getting all dressed up for winter riding.

The VMH kinda twisted my arm into taking part in a charity/fun relay race happening on Saturday. I’ll be the cyclist leg, during which I also have to pit stop to eat some local food.

Pretty weird fascination with food in the U.S. these days – t.v. shows are either about losing weight because you ate so fucking much for so fucking long, or about how to cook like a professional (stop referring to chicken and fish “protein,” you stupid arsehole with a food blog), or a challenge to see how much you can eat. Can’t I just eat afterwards? I’d enjoy it more instead of having to chug it down.

You remind me that I’m a fucking hack and you’re actually a writer.

Its funny, I train alone 99% of the time; my work schedule, responsibilities here, and family (in that order) mean I ride when I carve a hole for it in my schedule, which is not usually when a group ride is planned.

Group training with friends is also something I admonished long ago when I got serious about sport due to the inherent competitive nature, or even the fact that you’ll naturally wind up riding at different speeds, or get tired at different times, or want a coffee at different times.

Even now that I’m not serious about sport from a “become a pro” perspective, I’m still inclined to do all my serious training alone – less distractions, 100% focus on what I need or want, when I need or want it. But its also hard; I have to find the motivation in only one source: me. It amplifies my love for it, it amplifies my disdain for it.

But I love the group ride for the social aspect and just to kick it with others, but I’ll rarely get into the competitive side of them – save it for Race Day, I used to say. Convenient now that Race Day is usually just a few days a year, not every week. Old habits die hard. Which isn’t to say I won’t go hard in a group ride; its just that I’ll only go hard when I feel like it.

That said, a week like Keepers Tour is beyond awesome. Riding with people who are first strangers and then friends is a journey I wouldn’t miss for anything in the world. Bretto and I just commented today on the daily withdrawl we’re still going through.

Whether your environment is you or strangers, or friends, bikes manage to always be the needle carrying the thread between them.

VLVV.

Wake me up when this is over…

Last weekend’s World Cup XC MTB race, though. Wow! ‘Strayans take U23 women’s and elite men’s races.

There was an Absaloncopter. More of a slam straight onto the ground, breaking the RD. Mud, rain. Excitement! I’ve watched it three times this week.

Still got the lantern. Cant waif for Contador to do the same all over the tour and Bretto to be wildly ecstatic over every stage.

What cracks me up the most is the way he chucks Cuddles into the “classless” can one day and then the next he’s the greatest ever Tour champion in the history of time. Then back into the “classless” bin and so forth.

This is how it is designed, actually. You are ranked by how negative your points are (thats how we get the order between the “tied” donuts) but scores don’t actually go negative. Same things goes for the overall GC.

I’m glad you were paying attention during our design sessions on this stuff.

@Steampunk just sent in some very interesting ideas for next year. Cool stuff.

In the winter on Fridays we have races at the velodrome too.

As for Nibbles’ domination, well, look at the competition… hardly a class field he’s up against. This ain’t the Tour.

Hey, you can only compete against those who show up or stay until the end. Too many coulda, woulda, shouldas if you start saying, “we;ll, if Wiggins haad stayed in” if Contador/Froome/etc was riding” As unhappy as I am about it, Oscar Pereiro won the Tour. Shoulda? No. But he’s in the books as the winner. Nibbles is a damn fine rider. He showed up, has raced smart and stayed healthy. So long as he doesn’t fail a test (and he’ll begetting tested every day as Maglia Rosa and as a stage winner) he’ll be as worthy a winner as there could be.

I logged on specifically to voice my suspicion about Nibbles but I see you’ve beaten me to it. I trust Astana about as far as I could throw them (I wouldn’t want to try; too much risk of building some muscles mass on my arms) and I can’t help but look on this with a degree of suspicion.

Obvioisly the same could be said of Sky at last year’s TdF; is their abject failure (by their standards) at the Giro proof that they’re not ripped off their tits on uppers or merely trying to make it look less suspect? Personally I believe it’s the former…

Nice! I passed up a similar-vintage Kestrel not so long ago. It sat in my office, then in my garage. Too much work to make it road-worthy and just a bit too big. More vintage time piece than functional alternative to what was already in the garage.

I’m staring to get a sense of deja vu.

On the other hand, I’m looking forward to the various excusing which should be forthcoming from Cuddles any minute…

I’ve been quietly pleased with my outside bets: Santambrogio and Intxausti, both of whom have now fallen out of the top five, but have taken stage victories. I’m rather hoping for an epic collapse from Scarponi and Evans to put them back in the money. But that might be asking a bit much.

No change on the GC from the VSP perspective, but 2/3 could shuffle

Will be rooting like mad for Uran to make this happen… that way I could at least salvage 8 points.

Of course with my luck Evans will completely crack tomorrow and saturday, drop down past 3rd and I’d be back to 1 point again.

Oh well, either way can’t wait to watch the next 2 days of racing. Hoping the weather is good enough to run the race, but bad enough to make it epic. Here’s a shot from the Stelvio webcam at 12pm local time today:

Some serious backpacks on a couple of those riders.

Yikes, Nibbles on a monster. Too bad any suspense in this year’s race is gone. He’s racing like a 2006 Basso.

Interesting commentary on my (and I presume others) view on our culture; I considered him clean at Liquigas, and his move to Astana (which I don’t consider clean) and a performance like this puts him squarely in the suspicion category. The alternative is that they’re all clean and he’s rising to the top because of it, but I put as much stake in that as I do that as being the reasoning for the Great Columbian Ascension.

No change on the GC from the VSP perspective, but 2/3 could shuffle and personally I’d be grateful if Scarples fell to 5th..

I too would appreciate Wee Scarpo falling to fifth as it looks like that’s my only realistic change of getting any of the top 5 right. Looks like Evans had a bad day which I was sad to see – I think he’s ridden a great race. OTOH, his low finish helps keep the red jersey on Cav which I want. He was robbed of it last year by being taken out in two sprints in which he would have scored points – in the end he lost it by 1 point.

I’m going to remain hopeful….I find it inconceivable that in the modern era the lead riders would still dope when they are tested out of their skins…surely there is more scope for larger time margins on a hilly ITT and that he did have a very quiet first week with little excess expended energy but even as I type this I have quesy feeling in my stomach.

I just hope my gut feeling is wrong and that we are able to celebrate his stonking form….

@Deakus Vacansoleil and Androni are riding Bianchis with Campag. And Bardiani ride Colnago.

You’ve got 4 teams (at least) riding all-Italian bikes, and two of those are Italian teams.

That leaves 15 teams with a range of Italian, French, German, American, Taiwanese and Swiss bikes coupled with Shimano or Sram.

So, statistically higher odds.

Thanks I stand corrected….so many teams and people that have not see the true path!

@Deakus The chances of an Italian on an Italian bike with Italian Gruppo winning any stage are fairly high in the Giro.

In any case Visconti had been tipped as a possible stage winner yesterday.

And it wasn’t as if the peloton forgot to chase – they had got less than a minute from the break when Visconti went away and actually there was a very technical section where it was always going to be hard for a big bunch to chase. After that it was downhill mostly, again favouring a breakaway.

The group was made up largely of GC riders and the few others who had ideas of winning were on their own with no teammates to lead the chase. It kept starting and breaking down.

And then of course there was Navardauskas who didn’t even realise Visconti was ahead and thought he was sprinting for the win. ooops.

Finally, if there was a conspiracy then surely the Shimano and SRAM teams would do everything possible to disrupt it.

Nothing to see here…

Erm…I’d have to check but how many teams run Italian bikes with Campag on? (I’m thinking of the main teams not so much the wildcard entries) I thought it was only Movistar..?

Now you have just gone and spoiled a perfectly good theory! I do however feel the peloton made a bit of a hash of chasing him down…especially with race radios to hand, but then I guess they did not see him as a GC threat and so didn’t focus enough…after all it was meant to be a sprinters stage right?

ok ive updated my bike. yes the bars still need to be slammed. but no more white tyre and tried to make it more “photo” correct. i’ve tried to keep the bike simple with little bling. Shot taken from my blackberry so im sorry its not the best quality.

Damn those blackberrys they always seem to capture the cranks at the 6 o’clock postion! Bike is looking stunning though..and was great to see yesterdays Giro victory was on a Campag equipped bike on their 80th anniversary in their home city….mmmm the way Sean Kelly and his buddies were waxing lyrical about Campag and the way the peloton let that break of one get away, it could almost have been staged…*cough…no conspiracy here…move along….

Don’t know why, but I hate the loud noise of the expensive/flash hubs these days. I can’t remember where, but I read an article where a rider joined some pros for a training ride. After discussing prior with one of them about ettiqute and style, on the first downhill his mentor chided him “PROS DON’T FREEWHEEL!”

Descents aren’t for recovery, they’re for going faster…

And if you feel the need to freewheel in the group, how about jumping on the front and using up all that conserved energy champ?

i believe that was cyclingtips who mentioned that. he rides with pros pretty regularly.

the only time you should hear a freehub is when you’ve reached Escape Velocity. and then it shouldn’t matter anyway, since the wind in your ears is all you’ll hear.

and you’re right; there’s nothing worse than hearing freehubs in the paceline. if you’re riding a wheel, soft pedal. if i hear your freehub (or you being too chatty) and i’m on the front, i’ll up the pace.

So Visconti bridged the break before sharting them out the back!? Effervescent!

I am not one for conspiracy theories normally but let’s call this a strange coincidence. From 50kms out the commentators (Eurosport – Sean Kelly et al) were waxing lyrical about Campag (this is a good thing, I ride it and love it). They covered the history, the innovation, the quality and all this I was lapping up thinking….bloody right this is Italian shit is great stuff.

Then a lone Italian breaks away. The peloton spectularly forgets to chase in a timely manner and ensure his solo break succeeds.

So on the 80th anniversary of Campag, in their home town, a lone Italian spectacularly rides away from the Peloton on a largely techinically free finish, on an Italian bike with Campag Gruppo with the commentators giving Campag thousands upon thousands of pounds of free advertsing..

and this does not seem like an incredible coincidence….er little bells are going off in my head…

Sometimes I feel

Sometimes I feel

Is the city I live in
The city of Angels
Lonely as I am
Together we cry

I drive on her streets
‘Cause she’s my companion
I walk through her hills
‘Cause she knows who I am
She sees my good deeds and
She kisses me windy and
I never worry
Now that is a lie

I don’t ever wanna feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way
I don’t ever want to feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all that way (yeah yeah yeah)

It’s hard to believe
That there’s nobody out there
It’s hard to believe
That I’m all alone
At least I have her love
The city she loves me
Lonely as I am
Together we cry

Yes, he was a voice in the wilderness. For the next year it was just the other Keepers and Jarvis commenting. We start slow.

You tell ‘em Frank.

I’m all for fighting doping in cycling, but the various cycling governing bodies appear to be more interested in appearing tough on drugs than actually being tough on drugs

Six years later and that little twat is still racing, despite at least two drug offenses. He should have had his license revoked and made redundant, as the brits say.

Fuck…and it took 6 years for the first comment to be posted on this…2007 must have been a very quiet year in the Velominati…@Frank were you a cohort of one at this time?

ok ive updated my bike. yes the bars still need to be slammed. but no more white tyre and tried to make it more “photo” correct. i’ve tried to keep the bike simple with little bling.

That’s right. Winter is almost on you “down under”. I dream of visiting NZ someday. Originally for the climbing, but more and more for riding.

On a side note, today’s weather in the PNW:

Great evocative article @Brett. I was only commenting the other day with a cycling buddy how life has become so much easier now that the full winter regalia has been put to bed for the summer up here…although the weather forecast here today looks a bit changeable!

Over the next few months in Dubai it will take much motivation to go out and lose 5% of body weight to the heat.

Some people need an event or a target to get themselves through these periods.

I’ve always found the group ride is good motivation in itself. I’m happy to work at whatever pace the group wants, but if they choose to enter the pain cave I want to have plenty of matches to burn, and a few spare to put under other saddles.

I am amazed at the OCD and ADD I have developed as an adult. I woulda never cared even 5 years ago.

lol ya man. i have to clear and back bidons cause they match the bike. ive also learned that the “cheaper” ones are better cause they squeeze better. screw the camelback bidons.

@thebaron I dont get that, how do you have a Shimano cassette on a Campa hub?

skills my friend. skills. lol. comes with a small adapter to make it work. honestly these wheels are amazing for the money.

i also have an S3 specialized road helmet, so im all over the place. but i tried and researched so many lids and this one was too good to not buy. i was torn because of the cannondale/specialized clashing.

i like this.

Me too. Having a old loyal mutt myself, this brings a tear to my eye. Awesome.

im not gonna lie, made me tear up a bit too. a dog will always be mans best friend, and sharing one last great road trip would be something special.

The main one is that we are perpetually chasing the greener grass and oblivious to whats right in front of us. Im on the bike all hours of the day in the heart of the city and in a blanket of black on roads forgotten. Both can make the mind go blank and cover the face with a shit eattinf grin, just because.

The consumer confidence index needs a new metric, whether or not theyve been on a bicycle in the past weeks.

First ever race. Registered, went back to the car and first thing I pulled out was the rear wheel. Sidewall cut, there goes my race…

That sucks to be sure. But when you’ve been on the bike for 75 miles, a shit ton of climbing, whittled the field down to 8 (from 110 starters, trip to Nationals on the line), 3K to go, and you flat. That sucks worse.

To finish first, first you have to finish.

I actually invented the milarcopter.

Just quietly, Rule #4 & Rule #11 compliance to be sorely tested by this little fella over the coming months…

Congrats! I’ve been out window shopping and found this for the little fella at the Fyxo shop!
