@Mikael Liddy I won the Vuelta VSP with no rest day changes. Im doing the same thing all of this year. Rule Ving this shit.

Can you explain how choosing riders who are actually in the race is Anti-V, as your position on this matter implies?

Good on ya, but my head says that if OPQS have two riders finishing in the top five, one of them is winning this…

I had a ton of fun with this VSP in 2011 and 2012 but found the odds sites in 2013 and got too caught up trying to win and just pretty much went off of Oddschecker, which really took the fun out of it for me. So, playing by heart and what I have been seeing in the races, not by oddschecker for this year. I am sure that I will not place as high overall but I am also pretty sure that I will have a lot more fun with it!

I recently discovered that my father-in-law was a cyclist in his younger days. His beloved vintage Mercier Poulidor edition is hanging in his garage. We were talking about it one day, and later Mrs. KW says, “I think he’d really like you to have it and fix it up.” I haven’t asked him about it since I haven’t really had the time or budget to consider it right now.

Fingers crossed that the job interview I had yesterday pans out. Involves a significant bump in pay that just might facilitate the restoration!

For me, and for many others, it was about cars that we dreamed about as kids. Hence the rise in value – crazy values sometimes, of muscle cars in the early part of this century.

In the case of vintage cars, original paint is highly sought after. Did you consider leaving the original paint?

Very nice story, lovely bike and tribute to your Dad as well.

Beautiful looking restoration.

BTW, we forget how little seatpost people used to show, ala Pantani

True that. The compact frame has necessitated lengthy posts. Note also Pantani’s non-slammed stem. Still within spec – looks like 10mm to me, but unslammed.

Brilliant, that’s a lovely bike and great story.

You’ll feel great riding that along some nice lanes – love that colour and the details like the top-tube mounted pump.

A Brooks saddle ? And what did you do for bar tape ?

Although, cough… bidon.

Yup Brooks saddle, bar tape will be Brooks Leather soon, current is a bit of a cheat as I had a pack of white Lizard Skin in the drawer so put that on initially. Searching for a more appropriate bidon (without paying a silly price) and also need to get the bar cage re-chromed before fitting.

i am no stranger to the asphalt but I am constantly going back and forth

this phase happens to be in the woods and more gravel grinding

my problem is I take it to extremes when going from road to woods or vise versa when it comes to the bikes when it comes to what I keep and what I off load

i will post a pic when I get proper pic that abides by the rules

thanks

hello all new to this lovely site

question about bike posting and advice

does it have to be a road bike?

I am having a color scheme dilemma with a mountain bike and quite frankly road folks have better taste than the woods crowd when it comes to colors and combination.

As long as you are on the path towards the road then all commers are welcome! Nice to see you here, there are many mountain bikers and CX riders on the site but the conversation turns almost exclusively to the road once the dark nights of winter (northern hemisphere) have passed and the clocks change…

By all means post a pic or describe your dilemma, but a note of caution, we are a banter ridden and objectionable lot on occasions so expect frank comment…. or praise….

Enjoy! VLVV.

No Stannard in the Sky line up. They are going with Eddie Bos and Swifty as their sprint options and Geraint as the guy who gets in a good position then crashes at the crucial moment.

Stannard is targeting PR I think…

Geraint is surely leading the points jersey in that category!

Yes but it seems a difficult choice. Stannard seems to be in form and building well this season and PR will suit his heavier frame and power over the cobbles. They may well double hat it on the basis that so much can go wrong especially on entry to the pave section where it narrows and the peloton gets squeezed. Both hard men, difficult choice…

Those battery’s last forever, ten hour rides plus stops won’t get anywhere near depleting a Garmin 500 battery.

If battery life of a bike computer causes you that much worry, don’t look too closely into the other areas of your life that require batteries.

Couldn’t help but think how different things are today. My kids have bikes that fit them, and wear helmets studiously. How different it was when I (we?) were young…….

Second on its usefulness: I just don’t understand why I or anyone would need to have some gizmo tell me what I have in reserve. I know what I got and usually I am surprised to find when attacked and in other situations, I have more than I thought. Are these cyclocomputers so advanced that they know how hot/cold you are? Do they know you are fighting a head wind? Do they know the difference between a tail wind and riding in the peloton? Does it know you just dropped your bomb and in 15 minutes you are going to exploded? Do you really have time to look at the thing and figure, “Hmm it is saying I have been going this fast for this long and now there is this hill and then I have to drop this wheel sucker, but wait a minute, the finish line is 38.6 km away and I am thinking I good for a cool 39,” and then decide OK I should go?

No Stannard in the Sky line up. They are going with Eddie Bos and Swifty as their sprint options and Geraint as the guy who gets in a good position then crashes at the crucial moment.

Stannard is targeting PR I think…

@tessar For the intimidated, this might sound like I am beating a dead horse, but as long as I am taking an beating what the hall?

First a comment on aesthetics: a fine racing machine constructed of aluminum, steel, carbon, a bit of leather finely engineered to be strong, reliable and light is a truly beautiful thing. Having it crested with a hunk of battery powered plastic, in my opinion destroys that aesthetic. It makes it look like the engineer forgot something. Oh yeah, we will just slap it on here.

I am not criticizing here as much as I am trying to understand the true value of the thing versus dragging through the wind while making your bike look geeky. Why doesn’t the venerable Rule #5 apply to such gizmos. Doesn’t it bother anyone that the thing needs a battery? Do we really want to trust our ride to a mindless toy? The great god Apollo said “Know Thyself.” Its not a rule, but it aught to be.

Oh crap, by computer battery is going dea

ok, lets get this all done so the dead horse, the intimidated, the pedantic, and the lurking mofos can all move on.

1.aesthetics (ie removing the novel/high ground of the argument)

Rule #74
// V Meters or small computers only.

Forego the data and ride on feel; little compares to the pleasure of riding as hard as your mind will allow. Learn to read your body, meditate on Rule #5, and learn to push yourself to your limit. Power meters, heart rate monitors and GPS are bulky, ugly and superflous. Any cycle computer, if deemed necessary, should be simple, small, mounted on the stem and wireless.

2. for those racing/training/obsessed/etc., the power meter/computer is not only a real time instrument. it collects data for review later. this could be the basis for learning. perhaps even leading to improvement. magical wireless devices could be stowed in a pocket for the purposes of point 1.

3. fuck/stay/lay/pray- its your choice. but FFS, stop expecting to win the internet.

“A computer mounted anywhere on the bike has always been a red flag to other cyclists that you are asking to be dropped. (When ever I see one, my suffering is forgotten and then I dont see it anymore.)”

So if I understand correctly you think that riding with a computer or power meter is asking to be dropped and apparently that you’re the man to do it.

I really hope we are on the same ride some day.

Mikael – I kinda like Mike Tomalaris. But, maybe that is mainly because I see him in old footage that is very easy to like. He might not be cool if I had to see him all the time.

I spent a couple of days in Far North Queensland last year on a media junket, and Tommo was MCing the Croc trophy race. He is a funny guy to hang out with, totally aware of his reputation as being a bit of a bumbler (at least in his early days) and was very self-effacing in his humour. And he dished it out as good as he copped when we were on the drink and talk turned to the Pharmy years… I even told him how I’d contacted SBS TV on a number of occasions asking for his job, and he just said “well, you didn’t get it!” A good guy.

It is the driver’s insurance, I’m definitely going to push for it. The shop said they advocate strongly, so hopefully they can help out.

Having read this now, still check out your own policy & if you’re going to get better coverage on that, make the driver’s insurance company pay for your excess instead.

It looks like my bike may be done for after getting hit, dropouts are out of alignment and rear wheel is not completely true-able. It gets a vibration that is unnerving for cornering and especially descending. The insurance company is talking reimbursement of purchase price less depreciation. My LBS is saying it has always been MSRP reimbursement from their experience. Anyone here know what is up?

Check the actual policy document for your insurance policy, that’s what will determine what you should be paid.

My bikes are covered as general contents under my home & contents insurance as long as I’m not motor-pacing or racing, and that policy has a “new for old” clause in relation to any contents so I either get a new bike or the equivalent cash amount.

@RedRanger I think the tie break system looks at when you first entered your picks, not when you update them, so those that aren’t bothered by the Piti Principle could technically make placemarker picks as the comp opens & revise at the end…but you’d be a knob.

First one to recognize the significance of the release date. Plus One badge to you, mate!

Your own homeowners or renters policy should have a replacement cost provision. Check with your agent. If you were on the bike at the time, you might mention the pains in your neck or back.

@Steampunk

Question: do we get to make “rest day” changes after the Cipressa?

No. You stick to winning Barry’s quizzes!

He doesn’t give away bikes, wheels, and gear though…

Great stories like these make me wish I was a few decades older. Alas, I am but young, eager and lacking common sense. Still, this makes the legs itch to whip out the first proper bike I still have. The bike looks amazing, thank you!
