Handlebar V-Cufflinks (Bar plugs)

by / / 50 posts

Details are what separate the Velominatus from the Cyclist; we don’t just pay attention to them – we devour them. Our bicycles are carefully curated with every part sourced to meet our personal specifications, requirements, or whim.

And just as fine cufflinks round out a finely tailored suit, the Velominati V-Cog bar plugs dubbed the Handlebar V-Cufflinks round out the details of your beloved machine and subtlety state your place among the Order.

  1. @mcsqueak have you even used that pair of the aristocrats? They look shiny bright!

  2. Trigger pulled, shall be rocking the Zwarte on white combo.

  3. Wicked sexy, nice work gentlemen.

  4. @Marko

Hah, it’s absolute bottom-shelf crap. I bought it while camping a few years ago in California and there is a reason the bottle hasn’t been finished.

    @Mikael Liddy

I’ve only worn them a few times – they showed up right before the weather turned to crap for the season.

Awesome @Frank. For the record, who did the prototype again?

@sthilzy not only did the prototype, but wound up buying an injection molding machine and manufacturing the whole thing soup to nuts. Amazing dedication and awesomeness. Its been a total kick going through the process with him step by step as we’ve been working out the details. We’ll have to get him to write up his experience and photos of the process. All very cool stuff.

It’ll be a lengthy write up! There’s lots of processes that went into producing the V-Plugs. Here’s just the basic steps, and each step involves multiple processes.

3D CAD Design, 3D printing of prototype, paint masks, painting prototypes, die mold design, mold design build, injection molding, hot stamp printing, packaging. Correction, I ended up purchasing a hot stamping machine for the colour printing of the V-Plugs. Not an injection molding machine. Did look for one though!

Here’s the ‘V’ cavities being CNC machined. 12000rpm with a 1mm ball nose cutter.

@frank has tested the V-Plugs on his CX bike and has survived numerous crashes as well as his CX rig being thrown around in race conditions. As Frank put it,”They’re made from Flandrian plastic!” Enjoy the handle bar cufflinks!

  6. Hi Velominati.

Been lurking for a while but when I tried to buy these I got the “your cart is empty” message.

I figured the shop is for registered folks only, so here I am, registered at last, but still no joy with the cart.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks

  7. I should add that the zwarte cufflinks are for my reincarnating 80’s steel machine, a humble (Tange 900) Ricardo Elite, manufactured in my home town (back when we actually made stuff in Australia), and bought new by me as an 18 year old in 1987.

I knew bugger all about bikes really, but this seemed like the real deal to me back then, no 10 clunky speed “racer” that’s for sure. Hell it even had those fancy French valves. I pedaled it far and wide, grinding the 52/13 everywhere.

Oh to be a sinewy 68kg again.

  8. @El Segundo

I tried it and got as far as the Place Order button without any problems. Maybe a browser issue ? Apparently Internet Explorer makes the Baby Jesus cry and Frank swear.

Either that or it’s a metaphor, but I don’t know what for.

  9. @ChrisO

Thanks.  It came good. 2 sets of V cufflinks heading my way.

Jesus weep no more, Frank curse no more.

  10. Dang! I was hoping they were actual cufflinks.

  11. Based on the demand already apparant in these comments, how about some actual cufflinks?

  12. Real cufflinks for shirts? Count me in too. I regularly use them at work and would love to subtly remind myself about laying down some V on the next ride while off the bike.

  13. @mcsqueak

OK, here we go. I like to think the whiskey adds an air of sophistication…

(seriously though, they are really cool and it’s awesome to see an idea someone had become a real product.)

Personally I never think E additives are beneficial to food products.  Especially Whisky.

  14. Excuse the Rule #45 violation… Old man, sore back… Colour coded beautifully with the frame.

  15. @VeloJello

I think the amount of V in your last name makes up for the stem.

  16. I’d echo the shirt variety cufflinks request!

    David

  17. @KW Ha ha. Thanks.

  18. Any news for those of us who ordered and paid for these before they were marked out of stock? Mine has been “processing” for over a month now, and nobody is replying on the orders email… :-(

  19. Frank,

I’m sorry, but you’ve lived in the US too long and need to get back to Europe. When I tried to buy the bar end cufflinks the site came back with “You can’t [I’m paraphrasing] while we make adjustements to our fullfilment process.”

Adjustments to our fullfilment process?!?! What’s wrong with “while we change our ordering system.” Sheesh……

Anyway, I’d like to order socks and bar ends – any idea when that might be possible?

    Thanks,

    David

  20. I was slightly disappointed when I clicked this and found out that these were not in fact formal wear cuff links like I initially thought.  However, they’re quite beautiful and very liable to be ordered at some point in the semi-near future.

hint – Actual cuff links would be awesome.

Speak to Frank…………….dunno but I heard a rumour something could be in the offing downstream.

  22. @frank — you posted in the V-pint thread about kit being available after the first of the year.  Does that include cufflinks?  Would appreciate an update on timing on these.

For sure, in fact I might have some of these around too – if so I’ll put them up online this weekend as well.

Excellent.  I’d love a set in black for my ti Hampsten!

    And a 1 on real V cufflinks.

I’m putting my first road bike together in the next few weeks. Some V cufflinks would certainly help in the Looking Fantastic department. Any word on when/where I can get these?
