I’ve got a feeling in my gut that this is the GT where Pinot really challenges for the win, especially seeing as he won’t have the crazy pressure of being a Frenchman in July. That feeling is almost certainly wrong, but still.
1. Nairo Quintana
2. Thibaut Pinot
3. Vincenzo Nibali
4. Ilnur Zakarin
5. Adam Yates

A nice, interesting article then I got to that last paragraph… Fucken spot on mate!
Why is it that everything sounds so much better in Italian?
Even when translated into English it’s better – ‘fugitive’ describes a lone rider being hunted down by the pack so much better than ‘breakaway’, much more evocative !
Nice article, love the last para
Chapeau
@eenies
Fuck’in truth right there! That last paragraph needs to be written in gold and fucking emblazoned on the banner of this site.
Perfetto.
Brilliant! “We break away from society every time we ride, trying to gain time and space on the rest of life”
You sir captured the philosophy perfectly.
I’ll bet Oss might trade his 10.000 Euro prize for the honor of tossing that pink plasti-chromed THING in a wood chipper. And good on you sir Oss! Repeatedly going out against all reasonable hope and coming so close. What bravery!
And speak for yourselves. I’m putting 20+ hours a week on the bike right now before taper for my only race this year. I’m not worried about society. I’m breaking away from sanity and not terribly concerned that it might overtake me any time soon. VMW keeps asking me if I’m OK. Apparently I must be looking like a slightly tan zombie when I’m not on the bike. Drool. Glassy expression. Mumble. Pasta… Electrolytes…
nicely written, i had no idea about premio della fuga, it actually makes alot more sense to see riders in the break still pushing hard knowing the peloton is right behind them and they really don’t stand a chance. thanks for the insight. and yeah, that last line, golden ponyboy.
@eenies
I second this emotion. Great stuff.
1) Everything does indeed sound better in Italian I agree.
2) The last paragraph is gold I agree.
3) Very cool article and indeed for Mr Oss, Chapeau!
4) 20+ hours/week training for one, only one, race ? That must be one helluva not to be missed everything riding on it kinda race!
En français, it’s called doing Le Voekcler.
I’ve noticed Daniel kicking some serious oss the last couple of years. When commentators speak of an elite breakaway or chase group, Oss is usually in it. I’ve never heard of the premio della fuga (thanks Tom Mc), but he definitely deserves the accolades.
Nice article @Tom_Mc. I heard Daniel LLoyd talking about this jersey a few times during the many hours I watched. D. Oss is a stud. Watching him tapping out the kms, seemingly effortlessly in the break made me think, that’s what I’d like to be able to do if I was a pro.
I think he was there for some Spring Classics too. He rocks.
Very nice work here! Thanks for the article, Tom.
Since I haven’t seen it mentioned, how about the stage where Oss washed out on a corner while in the breakaway, only to jump up and just keep on motoring along. Damn, not even a pretty serious high speed crash can dim his passion for riding in the break. AVVesome.
Lovely article and the last paragraph is a gem. Thanks for writing!
With a four week old on my hands, doubt I’ll be doing much long riding for awhile. That said, even 1-2 hours puts me in an incredible mental space where I feel renewed and reborn. LOVE to return home feeling that way.
