Midwinter Meikleour Metric Cogal 2013

by / / 55 posts

Another Cogal in the Northern Hemisphere in 2013? Oh yes, The Farmer is inviting one and all to a Scottish Cogal, December 21st.

Start and finish at the Meikleour Inn. V to 9 as it should be light enough by then and will give enough time to get back before it gets too dark, mmmmmmm! Hopefully anyway.

Strave route is here.

  1. I should make it, weather permitting.

  2. Fluffing heck, this is turning out to be a real deal. There was me thinking that everyone would be in pre-Christmas lockdown and not allowed to leave the house until 8am on the 27th, except for that grea festive tradition of a countryside walk (once a year!).

Looks like possibly 6 in total so far, lets hope the nice weather continues for another 6 weeks!

  3. Only a month to go loons, I see the sun sets at Perth at 1538h on the 21st, but then the days get longer, ya beezer. Looking forward to it.

  4. Just trying to plan ahead, and do a bit of panic training natch! What is the consensus on catering etc? The idea will be to head to Aberfeldy which is halfway and have a light lunch there, I will also try and persuade the pub to do espresso pre start. But will everyone be heading home straight away or will you be needing a warm shower and a bit of a feed? Given that it is the Saturday before Christmas I thought no one would come but how wrong am I! Are you getting all day passes or having to rush back for some carol singing, insert other religious ceremonies for those not of a Christian bent.  My house is only 1 mile from the pub if that helps your decision.

  5. Is this open to all comers?  I live near Arbroath and would be up for it, that is if the day before in the Ferry doesn’t get too messy…

  6. Is it called Black Friday in Arbroath as well? I don’t drink a lot so I’m safe. Unfortunately that makes me the driver. Feel free to come along.

  7. Coffee, filtered. And will there be pie ?

  8. Planning to head home straight after. Christmas night out at Kingennie. Duncs where you at? I’m in Arbroath.

  9. How bout coffee instant and a scotch pie!

  10. I’m going to try and make this but haven’t been on a bike for two months.  Baby Indy arrived safely but she’s not yet learned that sleeping should happen at night.

Like @strathlubnaig my winter bike is made by the company I dare not name, maybe I’ll just cover the livery with electrical tape.

  11. @snoov The black electrical tape does the job okay, was out on the thing today. Stopped by your flat last month but naebody in. Hope to see you there at Meikleour !!

  12. Congratulations @snoov. I thought about contacting you several times over the past weeks but every time something came along to make me forget! Probably just old age.

Looking forward to catching up with you all. I will be diving off sharp though to prepare for a night on the sauce.

I have some really sticky black packing cling film that has covered my Douch fixed. Works a treat and will not risk damaging anything if/ when they come to their senses. Adds a nice sheen to the downtube for the moment.

  13. only 8 more sleeps everyone! I have realised that it shouldn’t be called a cogal as it is not long enough. Hopefully we won’t be blacklisted for this oversight, possibly Rule #9 conditions may make up for it!

As stated format is start at the inn for 9 still trying to negotiate the pub to open early for espresso, worst comes to worst there will be  a flask!

park in the gravel car park and then we will head off.

lunch will be at half way at Aberfeldy , depending on the winds on the day I may alter the route. Maybe not best to be heading up a steep hil straight after lunch, I scottish and don’t want to pay for something that may not stay down! On the plus side gives us a very fast downhill pre lunch.

Post ride plan is coffee and cake chez farmer, drink for non drivers and non alcoholic for drivers, warm showers available as well before you head away. I wasnt planning anything for the evening entertainment as I have something on and it is not the best time of year to book another night out, so that is another reason this isn’t a cogal.

given our 9 am start, allow an hour for lunch we should be back by 3 or Thereabouts. So should be ok fr light

  14. @the-farmer Thanks for the update. Looking forward to it. I’m bringing the pre ride flask and will have spare to share. Trying a new bean, Australian Skybury. Not sure how it will travel in a stainless steel thermos. I also have another event on at night and will toast the day with a post ride recovery  ale or 2 then. Timing perfect but the lights will be attached just in case.

  15. I’m sure it will travel better than aldis finest instant!

Looking forward to this – was hoping to get out today but weather beyond Rule #9 in Callander.

  17. @the Engine According to the forecast the rain is falling up there.  I thought that any day that the rain was actually falling vs going back up again was a good day up there?

@the-farmer  My twisted brain could not help but smile at linking “I scottish and don’t want to pay for something that …….” and “….warm showers available as well before you head away”.  Only family allowed hot showers?

  18. Ok, maybe not warm showers eh! That’s maybe pushing it a bit. My grammar and spelling don’t seem that great but I blame the ipad.

  19. Slight change of plan. We will now be parking and meeting next to some white sheds, these can be seen from the middle of the village, if coming from Perth turn left in the middle of the village opposite the small cross which has iron fence round it. Park in front of the  white office block on the left as you go up the drive. About 100 metres nearer Perth than the pub.

  20. I’m off to start my last shift of 2013. What time I get finished will depend on whether I see you all in the morning or not. If the let us out early for being good then I will join the rest of you sheltering from the strong winds behind @the engine for the Cogal. If I end up working till the wee sma hours then I wish you good riding, no punctures, a merry Xmas and I hope to see you all in the new year.

  21. Thankfully the wind strength has dropped off in the latest forecasts, so now we just have to contend with rain/sleet. Should be fun! See you in the morning.

  22. Gutted I cannot be along for this… Best of luck, have fun!

  23. @campbellrae1 Have a good one.

  24. @eenies

As for shelter, you boys haven’t met me yet! And you had tot go and mention punctures!

  25. Forecast is much as we can expect for midwinter day really, wind may be the issue, but what the hey…. Just spent a full on heavy metal week getting beasted on my rope access L3 renewal, so more than ready for some fresh air.

  26. Couldn’t make it today folks.  Got home yesterday afternoon to find a couple stealing stuff from my flat having kicking the door in.  Managed to grab them and get them to drop what they had apart from some necklaces and a ring which were later recovered when the cops got them.  I’m sad to say that the first thing I did was not check if the bikes were ok but when I got to that they were all present and correct and undamaged.  Bastards were about to make of with over two grands worth of stuff and my Lezyne bag with my spare tubes and multi tool etc!

If all goes well they’ll get five years.  Dirty fucks.

  27. @snoov sorry to hear that Snoov, but I am glad you nailed them before they got away. I hear that the sherrifs are supposed to be putting a greater sentence on house breakers, so if there is any justice they will get that 5 years. Psychological blow for you and your VMH though, wish you all the best for xmas & new year.

  28. The Meiklour Midwinter Metric Mini Cogal went ahead despite some inclement conditions, four hardy souls headed out over the hills of darkest Perthshire, and it was very dark at times, for just over the tonne, café stop in Aberfeldy too, and coffee n mince pehs at @The-Farmer’s ranch afterward. Typical scenery below.

  29. @snoov Sorry to hear that. Glad you and your VMH are OK though.

Was a good day out, if a bit cold at times… I’m pretty sure sleet and 65kph gusts counts as Rule #9. Great company as always on these rides! Looking forward to the next one already!

  30. @campbellrae1   et al Top effort guys.  Weather is appalling dahn souf.

@snoov Gutted, that’s terrible but I guess better that you got back in the nick of time.  Sorry to hear that anyway.

  31. Strong work loons. Sorry I missed it too but like @snoov my plans were scuppered by Mad Friday. My nephew was stabbed in the neck and missed death by a mm or two but he lost a cupla litres of blood… Where’s Doctor Fuentes when you need him? Thankfully he is on the mend after a night in intensive care. I did get out for a cupla hours this afternoon, defo a Rule #9 day.

  32. Ohhhhhhhh the pain the pain! Sitting here nursing cramping legs. You dirty so and sos! Very enjoyable day though. Just need to improve my fitness now. Proper weather for it, wet, sleety, cold all in all a fantastic day. And you should have been there tosee the violations.

  33. @the-farmer   Apply distilled malted beverage from the inside?

  34. @snoov 5 years? With our liberal legal system? I wish. Good effort on catching them dude. Summary justice would have been very appropriate. I know an officer of the law should not advocate that but sometimes…

  35. Feel so selfish now that I notice I didn’t even mention your ride, glad it went well.  I’ll be there the next time.

@eenies hope your nephew makes a speedy recovery.

Thanks everyone for the supportive comments.  @JohnB evidently there’s some legislation or something brought in so that any burglary caught over the Christmas period get five years, possible just a political stunt, we’ll see.

  36. @snoov pity about the break in but hopefully they will feel the full force of the law! Must have been worrying when you caught them in the act. Between that and a stabbing sounds like an eventful mad Friday for velomiscotties everywhere.

@teocalli duly applied some balvenie double wood very good, one of the few malts I can stomach usually enjoy jamesons Irish whiskey, sacrilege for a Scotsman.

  37. @JohnB

…he just fell down the stairs guv’nor…

  38. Thanks for another damn fine day out Velomiscotties (inspired @the-farmer!). It was definitely a day of two halves though. The first couple hours to the coffee stop into a block headwind accompanied by frequent driving freezing rain was frankly no fun at all. Never have so few been so grateful for the presence of wood burning stove and the sympathetic patience of the Watermill Cafe staff! I also appreciate the weather gods gift of a little watery sunshine and fair conditions for most of the second half. I’ll post what few photos I have on flickr in the next few days. Today I found out that fingers can get so cold they can have no effect on the iPhone screen until you stick then in your mouth and in that state you can’t get the glove shaped object back on!

Rest assured I toasted the ride with a dram of Highland Park on arrival at my evening function. Have a great Christmas and New Year, here’s to the Cogals in 2014

    Fixed your post. Watertight.

…he just fell down the stairs guv’nor… WITH EXTREME PREJUDICE,

  41. Two halves eh! The first half was cruel and the second was the unusual punishment.

    Have a good one.

  42. did someone say “coffee” ?

  43. @strathlubnaig Dead Man’s Hands. The blood will flow again…..

Nice selection of books over my shoulder too. Hoping for the one at the back for Christmas.

  44. My only excuse is weakness…

  45. …however I believe that @JohnB is the only Velomiscottie to have a 100% Cogal attendance record

  46. @the Engine Ooo, we would all be there if we possibly could. Nice scenery there.

  47. @the Engine

…however I believe that @JohnB is the only Velomiscottie to have a 100% Cogal attendance record

But his 100% record is inextricably linked to my 0% record and this of course rebalances things!

Stunning it makes me long for the highlands.  I return to the mother land about twice a year (Isle of Lewis) and the journey up the A9 from Perth to Inverness and then on to Ullapool just makes my heart swell with pride, especially in winter.  Good work all!

  49. Of course, the Midwinter Metric will now need to be an Annual Affair, see what @the-farmer started ?

  50. I have written up a bit of a Cogal report, will send it on to Gianni to add to others or chuck in le poubelle as required.
