Gravel Time

Join us for the third annual Bay Area Cogal. We’ve done Marin and the Peninsula/Santa Cruz mountains. This year we’ll sample some classic East Bay roads and 40-50 Kms of dirt/fire roads.

North Berkeley BART (ample parking) and the route looks something like this

Recovery ales to follow at the Westbrae Biergarten.

Ride Classification

// Cogal // Rule V (Hard Ride)

  1. More route information:  The ride is intended to be practicable on regular road bikes.  Tires larger than 23mm will make the unpaved portions more fun and reduce the likelihood of flats.

Here are some more photos of the featured parts of the route.

  2. East Bay wildlife and livestock we may encounter:

    Sheep.

    Cattle.

    Wild Turkeys.

Men in blue leisure suits — this descent is part of the route.

  3. HELLS TO THA YEAH BITCHES! I’m all over this shit like white on rice.

And screw the motorhomes! I’m finishing this ride this year, dammit!

HELLS TO THA YEAH BITCHES! I’m all over this shit like white on rice.

And screw the motorhomes! I’m finishing this ride this year, dammit!

Motor homes are a pretty rare sight over here.  The turkeys chase them away.

I’ll note that in fact all the photos/videos of fauna above are somewhere on the route.

  5. Another secteur of dirt fire road located this afternoon near Mt Diablo. Stay tuned for an updated route, assuming it is not hotter than hell out there on the day.  Which it could well be.

  6. Revised route, if it is not 40C out in Walnut Creek.  More dirt/fire roads.

  7. My recent crash has me at a “maybe” for this.  I’d really like to do it, and will keep you posted.  Nice shots by the way!

  8. @EricW I hope you can make some or all of the ride.  At least join us – if you are up for it – for the first part to see if very narrow tire ruts from our muddy misadventure in April are still visible!

  9. More pics from the route.  The infamous Pig Farm:

  10. re. the route, have you considered Old San Pablo Dam Road? a bit more fun than the new road, in keeping with the theme…

Funny I was thinking about exploring that Sunday morning on a ride over there.  Thanks for the suggestion.  But does EBMUD allow bikes?

  12. Yeah dirt: confirmed Old San Pablo Dam Rd. open to bicycles.  Thanks @David K for the tip.

  13. @Nate

See you in the morning. In Marin and coming with a friend from here. Looking forward to it. Thanks for organizing.

    Cheers,

    Dave

  14. @Dave R super. Weather looks perfect, we won’t fry out by diablo. Looking forward to it!
