Velominati Super Prestige: Amstel Gold 2016

Ooooof! The VSP generator and operators need more than a week to recover from that race. Tommeke may never recover, that chance will never come again.

We now move into the Netherlands and the first of three Ardennes races. Whomever did well in Paris-Roubaix probably won’t like all the hills in Amstel. Same with the beer but I’ll leave that beery subject alone this year.

PhilGil has been busy fighting drunk drivers (He Badger’d him!) and is now off the start list then again he is back on as of Wednesday. Sure, the police pay attention when the cyclist in the altercation is Philippe Gilbert, ffs. Matt Hayman and Tony Martin are on the list, ouch, no rest there. So rest, recover, don’t spare the malted rehydrating beverage. No Delgados please.

  4. And so it came to pass that everybody got exactly one point. ;)

Enjoyed that finale! Nice lesson in how to time your attack.

  5. Yup, I got a duck on that one. Unlikely I’ll be maintaining my 4th place in the overall.

Disagree. But maybe I should watch again…

Time to move the finish back to the top of the Cauberg. At least then the attacks have to go on the climb instead of a bunch of guys sitting in and waiting for someone else to bridge on the flat. Just about the total opposite of last Sunday.

I can see that; I do prefer a fight on a climb.

Still, Wellens went too early, and when the counterattack came after he was caught it was enough to open a gap and get the win. There’s a lesson in there.

(That shot of Wellens noodling on his own after he finished with the media all crowded around Gasparotto? Heartbreak.)

Maybe not a world class finale, but I enjoyed it and found it instructive.

  8. Serves me right for swapping out Gasparatto for Costa last night. Chapeau to a classy win.

  9. Nice emotional win by Gasparotto in the end there, but was that the most boring hilly classic ever otherwise?

  10. Anyone see the footage of Felline crashing out in the neutral zone? Talk is he was using his hand to remove some glass in his tyre & then got the hand jammed between fork & wheel.

Unfortunately it looks like he’ll be out for a while has he broken his nose & they’ve also found a small skull fracture (landed face first).

I reckon it suffers from the fact that it directly follows P-R (and especially in comparison to this year’s), but when one of the little fellas spent most of Saturday night keeping us up, I wasn’t too upset in having to sacrifice watching it last night. Was pretty sure I could happily find the last 10k online this morning for review before looking at results.

    Ouch!

Could probably have been avoided if he’d read the post (& discussion) about cleaning tyres on the go by Gianni last year.

Ouch is right. Who needs disc brakes when a human hand stops you so much better? It was like he hit an invisible wall!

Happy to see Gasparotto win and win it for a small team. Wins like this really help keep the smaller teams in the sport because it keeps their sponsors happy.

  15. If only I would’ve picked Gasparotto for the win and not 2nd…

Oh well, at least I finally got on the board.

  16. Gasparotto and colbrelli were on my shortlist, but then again so was felline! Ouchers! Poor man, that was some whack!

  17. I watched the finish again last night and it just seems odd to me.

So many teams had thier team leaders with support in the final selection but they were all just looking at each other when the big move went down – I was almost (almost) thinking it must have been fixed because it just seems so crazy that no one followed – when Valgaren went it looked like a couple tried but either stopped or popped. Perhaps it was because they were all marking each other – so none of the names went, because none of the names went – they just neutralised each other. But even then is seems strange that the support riders wouldn’t chase down the move – a lot has been made of Matthews and Gerrans, no doubt because of the Worlds debacle, but it seems to me there were other teams who seemingly stuffed the finish despite having numbers.

All that said it could just be that they were toasted having dodged the street furniture, endured the downpour and gone up and down all day – maybe no one could go when it mattered and I guess if the leaders can’t go why should you expect the support riders to be able to go?

  18. @dyalander in last year’s race, Matthews absolutely cooked himself following the standard Gilbert attack up the Cauberg, but because the finishing straight is so long over the top, they were reeled in again before the finish, at which point he had no sprint left. I think there was a lot of assuming that the two up the road wouldn’t last, especially seeing as that finishing straight was apparently in to a head wind.

  19. @Mikael Liddy

sure, he wouldn’t have wanted to get burnt again and I’m sure quite a few others didn’t go then for the same reason, but then why not chase and reel them in like last year? And why not send your team mate to cover the move? And that doesn’t just go for OGE – a bunch of teams had numbers.
