Velominati Super Prestige: Women’s Road Championship 2012

Olympics, check, what’s next? photo: PA

It seems like just weeks ago that Cav won his rainbow stripes, things were said, umbrage was taken. Luckily we have found more umbrage so we are good to go. This course is not like last year. It’s not exactly a sprinters finish. It’s a 128 km rumble in Valkenberg and the Dutch team is there for Marianne Vos. She has finished second in the World Championships five times and only won it once. For her this is a problem. This race must haunt her. It will take some amount of courage for the stakeholders in this year’s VSP to bet against her. Yet the Italians, British and Germans, among others, have brought some serious firepower to counter the Dutch. Here is a link to a start list.

Though their prize list is only 30% of what the men get, here at Velominati it’s equal points in the VSP. Do your research, pray to your god, and tune in on Saturday.

Here is a little video from 1998. The last time the women raced in Valkenberg.

  7. FFS, I really have no idea beyond Vos. I’ve wasted a few picks on Pooley, she is out, too wee. Let’s see, a Brit, a German, a Russian, and Evelyn Stevens. It’s a joke. There is no talk of this, no one (meaning me) knows who these women are, a start list is hard to find. What will make women’s racing more compelling?

    VSP PICKS:

    1. Vos
    2. Barnes
    3. Kupfernagle
    4. ZABELINSKAYA
    5. stevens

  8. Mmm lack of any real knowledge of the womens race is leading to complete pic melt down…changed em all around again.

    3. stevens
    4. trott

  9. It is indeed hard to get past Vos, yet five times out of six someone has…

@Ron Yes, we generally have a poor record and manage to get about half the picks even vaguely right – in fact NOT being picked by any of us is as good a sign as being picked. One day races are even worse than grand tours.

I must update the Vuelta actually.

  12. Vos wins it by destroying everyone else on the Cauberg the last couple laps.

    Neylan silver
    Borghini bronze
Neban and Breggen round out the top five

  13. Finally a WC for Vos, absolutely exploded the break on the Cauberg. Totally expected but still amazing to watch it happen live.

Congrats to Amber Neben on a fantastic ride to 4th – I have had the pleasure of seing her out doing hill repeats on local climbs and motor pacing through the local canyons in recent years…her dedication is inspiring and though I’m sure she’d rather be on the podium, it’s a great result nonetheless.

  14. Nice!  I was wondering if Bronzini the Vampire was faking it a bit as she is such a marked rider.  I think that I read that she had never finished out of the top two in any worlds she raced in.  I guess a third is not too bad, though!

  15. We have some provisional results. Rachel Neylan doesn’t show up in our data base and I believe no one picked her so I don’t think it will change the results but they will stay as provisional until out lord and master returns from another voyage of discovery in the woods.
I’ve had to put a place holder in there for her, a fella. Please ignore. Results to follow. Cyclops, your method won’t work.

  16. Ahhhh, fuck me!  Never mind my dispute.  Just realized that Borghini and not Bronzini placed third.  My bad!  Who the hell is Borghini anyways?  Any relation to the doped to the gills Jeannie Longo?

  17. happy to share sixth place with 56 others who knew Vos would win but had no idea about anything else!

  18. Am I in actual first or is it still a big tie? I would love to get WC stripes with my first VSP win!

  19. Pastels are all right. I recently lost my Guest Contributor badge, the WC stripes can take over for a year.
