GvA's race goes tits up

Velominati Super Prestige: Clasica Ciclista San Sebastian 2017

by / / 53 posts

This week we are currently in is the most boring week of the year. After three weeks of non-stop Tour de France coverage, we slip, without any warning whatsoever, back into the doldrums of loving a sport that doesn’t get any television coverage. When, on Saturday morning, I tune into San Sebastian, it will be via a crappy, low-resolution feed snaked off Steephill.tv.

San Sebastian isn’t exactly my favorite race, but it’s a race and after enduring the post-Tour hangover for nearly a week, I’m ready to take anything resembling a bike race. It even has enough climbs to make it interesting, and enough race motos to keep us biting our nails right to the very end.

So, go get jiggy with the start list, get your picks in, and let’s party.

  14. They didn’t do a very good job of hiding the motor on that BMC bike. You’d think the UCI commissaires would’ve caught that.

I know. I mean, grafting a whole bloody motorbike on the back of a BMC and then hoping no-one would notice? Really. But then again, maybe they only scanned the bottom of the seat tube and finding nothing, gave it the thumbs up.

  29. Truly a hardman yes ? “During the tour I didn’t have any problems when racing, but off the bike I wasn’t feeling very comfortable…”, Dan describes racing TdF with a broken back.

Just to be straight here, “…I wasn’t feeling very comfortable…” is how he describes having a broken back. Though he was fine when racing. Unbelievable. Reminds me of Thomas racing 20 stages, including the TTT, with a busted pelvis after getting injured on first stage a few years back.

  30. Frank: The race is live on Cycling TV in the USA. I think a 6 month subscription is $29. They do an internet broadcast of a number of fairly good races. For some reason, it doesn’t show up on Steephill as a broadcaster of this race. I have subscribed for a couple of years.

  37. After a Tour of mixed feeling for me (when it was Good, it was Very Very Good, when it was Bad it was a snooze-fest), I’m hoping this’ll be exciting! I’m at work, without a VPN, so not 100% sure I’ll be able to even get a stream running…

@frank Could you update the results on the Tour VSP page? They’re still showing provisional Week 1.

#5 should be Konig with the umlaut thingy, not like “King.” Stupid spellcheck for Merckx’s sake.

  44. Nice race. Very happy to see Kwiat take it, after doing some super-duper domestique work in the TdF.

  45. Missed this one. Didn’t even think the VSP was still happening given that the points for the TdF haven’t been calculated or posted.

  48. Get jiggy. Wow, been so long I nearly forgot people used to say that. Now I’m just waiting for everyone to stop calling everyone “bro”.

Completely forgot this race was on! Was packing up after a family beach trip and heading home. If someone had told me how many things you need to bring a 15 month old to the beach for a week…good lord!

Watched the replay. Pretty exciting race, I’d say. The Sky troopers are let off the leash and put in a nice 1-2 punch for a win.
