Velominati Super Prestige: Men’s Elite Individual Time Trial 2014

If Tony gets a flat or two and loses this time trial, bookies will be jumping off bridges into the Thames. It’s a lock, man, it’s a lock. There, it is now jinxed. You are welcome. Picking second through fifth will take some acumen. Will these be Vuelta riders or does that just hold true for the road race? Tony could have a jour sans. Consult your god.

Twiggo should be in with some speed, he could get lucky, or he could suck. You decide. Time is short and the points are worthy. Delgado at your own risk. A start list is somewhere, I sure can’t find it, FFS!

  1. @Gianni

    @simonsaunders

    @simonsaunders

Going with heart rather than head, I believe Tony Martin is unbeatable at the moment, but I just hope Wiggo can do it

    VSP PICKS:

    1. Wiggins
    2. Martin
    3. Cancellara
    4. Rohan Dennis
    5. Kiwatowski

Actually, can I swap out Kiwatowski ( not riding) for Kiriyenka please

    VSP PICKS:

    1. Wiggins
    2. Martin
    3. Cancellara
    4. Rohan Dennis
    5. Kiwatowski

Try just changing your pick, it should change until the count down clock has tripped the breaker on the VSP generator.

Yeah… unfortunately I didn’t manage to get back online to do this (or remove Cancellara) before the gun went!

    Arse!

    @the Engine

Why are you flicking your elbow like that?

  3. Delgado-ed. Doh.

  4. Nice one Wiggo!

    0
  5. Wow. I have to say that I did not by any means think that Wiggo was going to be able to pull that one out. Chapeau!

    0
  6. …and by 26 seconds nonetheless

    0
  7. Wiggo absolutely smashed that, no arguments. Chapeau!

    0
  8. So, uh, when do you think we’ll get a chance to see those stripes on the road next year?

    0
  9. Agreed. I think the fact that Wiggo himself is surprised tells it all. He had to know Martin was the hot favorite.Good for him. Another great – and well deserved – addition to his palmares. Chapeau. Sky have to be happy as their season (by their usual standards) hasn’t been that great.

    0
  10. He looks just completely destroyed in that interview…

    0
  11. @andrew

So, uh, when do you think we’ll get a chance to see those stripes on the road next year?

Same issue with Stybar being the WC in cyclocross.

  12. Zow! Simply Zow! I CAN NOT wait to see that on DCR tonight.

  13. Interviewer: “What went through your head when you woke up this morning?”

Wiggo: “That I needed a wee.”

Another gem to add to the list.

What a performance, with very few of the cognoscenti (velomiscenti?) predicting it. So where, in the all time greats list, should we place him now? Olympic track gold medallist, TdF, multiple classics winner and now world time trial.

    Surely up there somewhere?

    David

Up there for sure, but I’d be very careful equating cognoscenti and velomiscenti. Very rarely do those two groups intersect!

  15. @davidlhill yes to putting him in the pantheon but there is a slight hiccup with his “British” eccentricity, no? That is when the competition is Anquetil, Coppi, Merckxs et al?

Don’t forget Olympic TT gold medalist (beat Tony Martin in that one too) and he seems intent on riding the Classics again. Could there be a win coming this spring? He is surely “checking the boxes”.

    @Rob

Eccentricity? You’re being generous. He’s prickly, flinty and a little flaky, but cycling is much richer for Bradley Wiggins. Imagine what he could accomplish with Froome’s focus (but then he’d have to shave his head and flush his personality)? He’s certainly put another mark on the wall at SKY Pro Cycling.

    0
  17. @Minnesota Expat right you are. Actually I love that Brit thing – it’s never boring! Like some on the other end of the Chunnel…(calm down Froonk, just kidding).

Wiggo should have a bonkers good year coming up.

  18. Babooom! Despite that messed up hairdo of his, Sir Twiggins beat Tony soundly. Well done. And a few of you picked him to win also, despite my saying TM was a lock. Chapeau.

Read Sex. Lies and Handlebar Tape about Anquetil. His “eccentricities” make Wiggo look like some kind of zen bhuddist saint-like kinda guy.

  20. Holy shit, Wiggo. I mean, Holy shit!! Get in.

    0
  21. So, GB had six people to help Wiggins, but appartently couldn’t afford to take a woman for the women’s TT? For shame.

    0
  22. Wow what a result!

Can someone explain my score to me? I picked Martin, Wiggins, Dumoulin, Dennis, Kiryienka and scored only 4. Shouldn’t that have been 6?

Me thinks you should get 8 points: Martin (1), Wiggins(1), Dumoulin(4), Dennis (1), Kiryienka (1).

Click on the arrows next to each of your picks to ensure it was mapped to the right rider, that’ll also tell you how much you scored for each one.

  26. @wiscot

So, GB had six people to help Wiggins, but appartently couldn’t afford to take a woman for the women’s TT? For shame.

This is BS. The reigning national champion Emma Pooley has retired and the next likely riders like Joanna Rowsell have declared themselves unavailable because of track focus.

After that you’re looking at people who didn’t even make top ten at the Commonwealth Games. British Cycling decided to draw a line between sending someone for experience and sending someone as a token to finish 37th.

Australia only sent one man to the ITT instead of two but for some reason that hasn’t made the outrage news.

  27. Hmm. Apparently there is a Samuel Dumoulin. I’m disputing it coz who knew?

Looking at the tips I think lots have been burnt by this one.

  29. @ChrisO I would assume the Aussie decision is related to ensuring Gerro has as much of his OGE break neutralisation squad at hand as possible in the road race.

They could have given Hayman (the national champion) a ride, given that I don’t think he’s riding the road race. Though I don’t think he was in the OGE team in the TTT either? Hmm.

Err – I meant Hepburn of course. And he did ride the TTT. (I still stand by the “Hmm” bit though)

Pretty big sacrifice if you’re Luke Durbridge don’t you think?

And what’s Faboo’s excuse? I guess he has the RR in his sights. The course is a bit like MSR.

    0
  33. Faboo continues his downward slide in my estimation. I picked him without checking the start list. OK, my error, but wtf? On reflection he might not even have got a medal, as Dumoulin was only 15 sec behind Martin.

The RR course seems a lot more hilly than MSR, more than twice the vertical ascent, and more like LBL in my opinion. I would have thought not ideal for Faboo, but it’s the worlds, anything can happen.

    0
  34. Wow, thirty seconds ahead of the Panzerwaggen. Pretty damn impressive ride out of Wiggo.

  35. There are three disputed picks in the queue for Dumoulin; if you disagreed with the mapping, you should have disputed it before the event started it, as we’ve made clear all year; the rule doesn’t change just because you have points at stake.

Nevertheless, I am considering updating your mappings and awarding the points. HOWEVER, due to the bitching nature of the remarks made with two of the disputes, I am disinclined to feel sympathetic towards your situation. The third was very polite and I’m much more inclined to award the points to that individual.

The VSP is intended as a fun game and the fact that there are major prizes on offer does not give anyone carte blanche to violate Rule #43, particularly towards the good natured Keepers who spent time in his evening and weekend to map your picks (Brett and Gianni in this case as I was away). We The Keepers do this in our spare time; it is not our responsibility to intuit your intention when you fail to provide a full name or make it otherwise obvious who you mean.

  36. @frank wait a minute… an animated GIF without a cyclist in it?? Does this mean I can desist my refrain from using emoticons??

But in all seriousness, to all y’all out there, if you’re in the VSP for anything other than a badge, bragging rights, and maybe an apron with your name on it then you’re here for the wrong reasons. The way-over-the-top prizes are just the icing on the cupcake.

    0
  37. @frank

Normally, I’m anti-gif on this site. But I this one is an exception. How you find or remember these files for future use here is beyond me but this one is very funny. That ‘roo is about to kick the shet out of someone.

  38. @Harminator

    @Geraint

Do not doubt Spartacus, much. He fucked off right out of both the Tour and the Vuelta just in preparation for the road race. He has won Flanders and that has some climbing. Hopefully he has paid his Swiss teammates to work for him. If he hadn’t biffed into the barriers at the last olympics, Vino would not have won. He is my top pick!

  39. @Gianni

Sir Twiggins beat Tony soundly. Well done. And a few of you picked him to win also, because of my saying TM was a lock. Chapeau.

Fixed this one for you, Sir. And thanks for the tip on the RR; can we have a pic of Sparty to headline the WCRR VSP please, just to make sure?

    0
  40. @Gianni

Damn: is that the Gianni kiss of death for Spartacus’s chances? I suspect he’ll show up this week looking leaner than we’re used to seeing him. There’s little question: when he sets his mind to an objective, he realizes it. That singularity of focus throughout the year on the Men’s RR is pretty frightening. If I’m any of the other would-be contenders, I’m sticking a frame pump between his spokes if I want to hold him back…

It looks like Wiggins is trying out for a role in a good gladiator movie. But there is only one Spartacus. OK, maybe a few.

Depends how much the pay off is from OGE/Gerro/Gerry Ryan should the sniper get up…it’s not like he doesn’t have time on his side to tackle the TT.

  48. @freddy No sweat, you were not rude. Neither was one of the others who has already apologized as well. Stress of the week behind and it being Sunday and sunny out, I’m not as annoyed by it, either.

My brain is pretty useless for most things except stuff like that. I can do the same thing with Cycling and Star Wars trivia.
