Never said you couldn’t get injured going 17 mph or 0 mph. At 56 I know a think or two about getting hurt including a TBI with an 8 year recovery. Million of cyclists around the world ride their entire lives and never hit their heads. Some do. I know the ‘risks’ [extremely limited] and have made my choices.

If people are really worried about my safety they’d come get the Potato chips out of our pantry.

In the unlikely event you are hit by a car, even when standing still you’ll get flipped on its bonnet (hood) and your head will make contact with the windshield. You’re not going to walk away from a trauma like that but you might recover from it if your head has some protection.

In my only major impact with a vehicle I was struck from behind by a pick up truck and didn’t end up on the bonnet. I rotated forward and dropped into a roadworks trench landing right on the top of my helmet and then over onto my rucksack(early morning commute) still attached to the bike at the pedals. My helmet split and I did crush my tinned soup lunch. The worst injuries were 2 crushed vertebrae (T7 and T11) but I’m sure my skull would have worse off without that layer of polystyrene to take the impact with the hardcore. I do know of many other rear end shunts where the rider did strike the windscreen though and came off much worse than I did. I was lucky this time. Never the less I’m never comfortable on the bike without a lid but still believe it is the individuals decision to wear one.

Oh ouch. That’s pretty nuts there, @JohnB. I have to say that I’ve been lucky with my recent accident-by-sideswipe. I did hit my head and I’m VERY glad I was wearing a helmet. (As an aside, I’ve also hit the deck at 65mph on a motorcycle, and also hit my head during that impact. Thank Merckx for helmets!)

Not necessarily will you get flipped onto the bonnet (hood).  In my case I was hit directly from behind by a car and as far as can be worked out I cleared the car completely and landed in the road behind it.  All things being considered I was extremely lucky as I landed on my shoulder blade and head.  My rucksack took a lot of the impact (I was on the way home from work and so had work clothes etc in a rucksack) which saved my shoulder/back and my helmet was split in two.  No doubt I would most likely have bee daisy fodder without a helmet.  As it was I “just” had a heck of a headache for a few days, neck injuries (trouble supporting my head for a few days) and road rash from above my waist to my knee on my back and side from the post first bounce impacts.  Oh and the bike was trashed.

Uh, take a look at my post above, with the pic of my broken helmet and the X-ray of the plate holding my clavicle together. I was going approximately 17 MPH when I went down. Hell, you could fail to unclip at a stoplight at 0 MPH–your skull is always going to give before asphalt and concrete.

I’m totally on board with the idea that cycling is not a dangerous activity but you should check the Design Standard of your helmet if you want to make an informed decision.

Of the two situations you described it’s designed to protect you in one of them (maybe, depending on the Standard) and it isn’t the one you are using it for.

FUCK’IN Ludo Dierckxsens!!! Talk about your throw back cyclists! Guy is just awesome! Watching him hammering out those P-R’s with Hincapie and Museeuw back in the late ’90″²s/early 2000″²s just blows me away! Just hardcore! But, for the helmet, we are missing the back piece on that helmet that he always wore. Not sure what it’s purpose was?

Further evidence of my amazing computer savviness here:  It only took me 48 hours to figure out how to post the photo of dear ol’Ludo’s helmet with the useless whateverthefuckitis back visor!

When the helmet laws were introduced in NZ (New Zealand) the number of people cycling (not cyclists, just bike riders) dropped significantly. It’s a public health issue as it discourages those who look for excuses to not ride.

I’d rather it was a personal choice issue. I’d always wear it out cycling, but maybe not while riding in the park with my kids.

I know this is a very debatable opinion, but I don’t like being told what to do.

I’ll add mine to the gallery. Hit a bump in the road (which I have no memory of doing so). Hit the deck really, really hard. Broke my clavicle, cracked a couple of ribs, partially collapsed right lung. Huge bruise on my forehead and the headache from hell for two days. Had surgery to put a plate in the clavicle. That was last September 15, and by the end of November I was back on the bike.

I won’t even ride around the block without wearing a helmet.

Yes. We even got a little Rule #9 toward the top. And what made it more sublime was that I was riding with a Cat 3 from Texas (elevation 190m) who was not yet acclimated to the 2500m elevation so it was nice to be on the dishing out end of the climbing suffering for once.

I just got a Troy Lee A1 in silver flake for the MTB. Ridiculously comfortable. I wish they made a road helmet. I probably can’t get away with removing the visor for CX races.

Why did I own one of those shiet early Giro helmets when the Specialized ones that looked so much better? Maybe no Spesh dealers nearby but you are right, all the early Brancale, Bell, Giro helmets sucked DB.

Also, the Three-Point System is hard to deal with when one has a massive, thick-walled, nearly empty skull. Helmets just can’t cover all that real estate. Maybe that is the only thing I have in common with Fignon.

Is this why?

Most serious crash to date was with one of these Giro’s back in ’94 – fairly sure it saved my life despite its looks. Still have the remains as a reminder.

When I first got my black Propero II life was perfect: the shoes matched the socks, matched the bike, matched the tires, matched the seat, matched the kit, matched the bar tape, matched the helmet, black, black, black….ahhhh… I get shudder just thinking about the beauty of it. Slowly my shades, Half Jackets, began slipping from the vents. At first just when dropping my head in exhaustion, then while peaking under my elbow, and now they come unseated at every bump, twist, and turn. I am forced to at all times wear them over my eyes, because I refuse the disgrace of slipping an ear piece between my neck and jersey.

Exactly the same thing with my Jawbones and new Giro – exactly the same as the recently mangled one but the Oakleys just won’t go in.

I prefer to have the arms of my sunglasses grip the back of my ears a bit, so I usually bend them down if they’re straight.  On all of my helmets, that has the effect of raising the glasses up when tucked into the vent.  It also lets the glasses hook into the vents a bit more for security.  Note: I do the upside down tuck to get the lenses out of my field of vision.

And, I must admit, there is nothing better than donning the cycling cap, in fall, and heading out into the setting sun with the bill of the cap doing exactly as it is purposed for, keeping the sun out of your eyes.

I have to disagree on you calling out Monsieur Fignon on his 3 point violation. Those are prescription glasses and cycling specfic eyewear (as far as I know) did not have Rx inserts back then. Add to this the fact that the legs of his glasses would not have fit around the straps properly, and they would likely have kept falling off. I say he gets an exemption.

You’re confusing Rule #37 with the Three-Point System. Totally different animals. And, while both would be wrong, both are independently violable.

I wish I could say the same for Sean Kelly who despite being my #1 rider of all time, wore some god-awful brain buckets (I’m looking at you, Brancale) for the $$$ as thy were not mandatory when he wore them.

Kelly was the classic example of the Pro who could not transition between hairnet and helmet. We bought the rights for two photos in The Rules just to demonstrate this very notion.

As an anesthesiologist at a major trauma hospital, let me assure you all that your skull doesn’t care if you were riding a crit or going milk pick up milk. Could I get a clarification on Rule #16 from a Sensei please?

Although I strictly adhere to Rule #16 and respect the jersey, does Rule #16 apply to caps when worn under my helmet?

I want to wear one of my various team caps but do not want to be in breach of Rule #16 which although it applies to the jersey, the spirit of the rule could be extended to caps.

Frank, I’d strongly recommend not looking into “tiagra-gate” It’ll only raise your blood pressure..

If they are not in use over the eyes, they must be tucked in the helmet vents.

I always felt like Contador was one of the few allowed to break this rule.  Hanging the shades on the back collar of the jersey is a douche look, but being a personality who has fully embraced his inner douche, it fits the character.

FUCK’IN Ludo Dierckxsens!!!  Talk about your throw back cyclists!  Guy is just awesome!  Watching him hammering out those P-R’s with Hincapie and Museeuw back in the late ’90’s/early 2000’s just blows me away!  Just hardcore!  But, for the helmet, we are missing the back piece on that helmet that he always wore.  Not sure what it’s purpose was?
