Oh, and I just got in 50 k this morning, my first proper solo road ride in my town in over three weeks. It was amazing, mind shut off, legs went, on a nice bike, having a good time.

And I realized the article on urban riding, plus the conversations afterwards made me a better busy-area cyclist today. I rode more aggressively defensive, instead of passive-aggressively defensive. I used to expect the drivers to take care around me, then get pissed if they didn’t. Today I let them know, with hands, a look, a signal, what I was doing at all times. Most were very cool, one or two who ignored my “suggestions,” but hey, it worked most of the time.

Did have one near right hook. Driver sped up to pass me, then turned right RIGHT after passing me, as I was whiping my brown on my shoulder. Phew. It only takes a second, constant vigilance is a must. Cars, pedestrians, and squirrels + deer for me today.

Alright, so it is Monday for me and I just finally got the chance to watch the final 9 k, via Sporza feed, in Flemish. However, I knew what happened and, more importantly, how it happened and who Did This To Them. As Ryder says, he’s making other very strong PROS look like stupid dicks.

On that feed from 9 k to 5.8 k, the camera just shows Barredo. Then, at 5.8 k the Man in the Belgian Champion kit makes his first appearance. Ugh oh. Then the camera moves forward, revealing that he has the wheel of a teammate. Ugh oh. You guys are fucked. He’s just going to go and see if you can chase him.

When Gilbert entered the camera like that, it was like the cowoboy in black just walked into the bar. He’s bad to the bone.

This happened to the French when they backed off the sauce as well. I think it's no wonder that the countries who work the hardest at fighting doping go through a dry spell. They'll turn around and the wins will be good ones. And, Nibali should be good in the Fall Classics.

@Marko +1 to that. It's sad that in the US, it's hard to see any discussion of cycling these days. I was surprised that the NY Times had a couple of stories about the TdF during the last two days of the race. Yup, the LAST TWO DAYS!! And one article mostly addressed issues we, too, had been discussing, including the likely diminished use of doping in the peloton. ESPN (24 hour sports television, for those not in the know) had a brief mention of the final stage, with the commentator saying that "Andy Schleck won the final stage", all while they ran the video footage of Mark Cavendish crossing the line behind the HTC lead out train. Good grief.

Bravo to all who had the class to pick Gilbert. I wish I had. I felt bad putting in Andy Schleck as a choice for a few people because he wasn’t racing and I felt bad for people who picked Sastre as he maybe was there.

Gerrans, Ryder, Richie were a few dark horse picks. Cunego was picked a tons. Who knew? And I hope Purito=Basso or a few people will be contesting the results. And a few picked Sanchez without specifying which, so I picked Sammy for those. Anyway, contest away, I will abide.

I was really surprised to see Frank Schleck in the mix. I wouldn’t say his TdF was easy, but he seemed to maintain nice form. But Gilbert? What I said in an earlier post rang true. Totally. Winning. Good race, overall. What was more surprising was not seeing Cunego. He finished six and a half back. Wow. Guess he couldn’t go after all.

Alex makes some good points above. I think a strong breakaway takes this race. The climbs are not for the weak. Gilbert has just enough true grit to get the win, and I think he still has the legs and form to make it happen. But, I’ve been wrong before.

absolute stacked field crapshoot, but an elite break will go.
Riders coming off form post tour, riders coming into form post tour, well rested Giro-heads, classic specialists and GC contenders all in the mix.
Me-thinks the top climbers from the tour will distance Phil this time, these aren’t punchy climbs.
Ryder is in the mix, two top 10 finishes in the last 2 years and rode well in the end of the tour.
I think J-Rod will be just too motivated and quick for them. You should see the list of riders i left out!
