Purple Extreme lube on the #1. I get over 2000km out of a Dura Ace 10 speed before the chain checker says .75. Change before 1.0 and cassette is good for 3 chains. Shimano wet lube on the winter/ rain bike.

Just stripped down chains on N1 & 2 and then applied Dumonde Tech….man that stuff smells awesome….I will be sorely tempted to smother the VMH in it tonight!

Where are you riding in GC?

The climb up from Mogan to 2/3 way up is one of the best climbs anywhere – bit shitty on up to the top of the mountain after that, but glorious up to that point, and what a descent! 10/10 – mind you, it’s in a sheltered gully, so make sure you have plenty of water and and ice maker on your top tube, coz it’s gonna be frikking hot in the summer

Staying in Amadores this year. This will be the 4th year in the past few I’ll be in GC, spent a couple in Lanzarore and Tenerife. Just not the same. I know that Ojeda climb well, it was one of the first I discovered and the one I look forward to most every time I’m back. There are options to continue for a whole day run taking in the 1949m of Pico de las Nieves or return via Soria or Ayacata if its a couple or 3 hours. Free Motion do great hire bikes, no need to risk my own to a Ryanair baggage handler. It does get a bit cooler up high, but still sharpens the tan lines nicely. Plenty local options to sample an espresso and top up the bottles. Going to have a closer look at the north of the island this year.

In the interests of health and safety and not blowing up my house, I am not going to spend any time melting down parafin wax…..as they say….a fool and his house are soon parted!

There was a study done similar to this which had Dumonde Tech as the worst performer. I don’t generally use it on a rain bike because it is a real oil-based lube. On the other hand, in clean conditions, nothing runs smoother and quieter and I still use it and love it.

And it smells fantastic.

They should have been independently added on the day.  I can not remember which stage was the “one off” where a VSP were run on a single day for that stage only, but if it was stage 10 they were all added on the day.  Your 9 points for the finish should then have been added a day or so ago…

Apparently it is not the wax catching fire that is a worry (although that can happen too) it is the fumes that are extremely flammable and explosive.  You need some sort of low heat burner…i.e. a cadle or hex tab might do it.  Do not try and light it up with a pinch of C4!

I use their Ice wax on both my road and mountain bikes, but it only rains here 2 weeks the entire year, and I have to contend with all the dust and sand that gets into everything.

I ordered it off ebay and it was shipped from the states…it was a little pricey but I figured if it works as well as stated it would be worth it.  The N+1 has a brand new chain so I have been living with the factory wax but am about to do a strip down and re-lube so I will be cracking the seal on the Dumonde any day now…

If I’ve had a soaking and can’t clean That Fucking Bike due to family duties I spray GT 40 on the drive train to keep corrosion at bay until I can – I’ve seen rust develop during a coffee stop.

You might wanna try green oil super dry chain WAX , yeah, it’s “dry”, but given that we clean & lube more regularly than you’re average punter it will do the job. It’s great for avoiding that build up of shite

Particularly since the good Doc appears to be better with a scalpel than his spell checker as I had a job of it sorting out what he’d said. And, the people he appears to have a beef with don’t run the site. He attention to detail mirrors his opinion of electronic shifting.

I’ve just assumed it’s his digital version of a doctor’s particular brand of illegible scrawl…

Every single one of ’em who finished that tour, hard as FUCK, long, fast, steep, wet, cold, steep, freezing, fast, steep, snow, rain, hail, and they’re racing each other, hard as FUCK. Great tour the strongest guy with undoubtably the strongest team, he still had two left 3km from the finale of stage 20, very well ridden by both, so if Nibali is not at TDF then who is Astana’s GC guy?

Looking forward to seeing how guys who rode the Giro perform in France, Cavendish must be rubbing his hands with glee at his prospects, again great support from his team, another great aspect of this noble art is that it requires an entire team for one individual to win, and that’s just the team on the road, the investment must be huge at this level, anyone know what kind of budgets they operate with?

Carbon rims on your rain bike.

All of my riding through this autumn in Melbs has been on Carbon rims.  The thing that I’m discovering is that;

i) They perform surprisingly well braking wise

ii) They stay clean!!

I’m loving the fact that even after a filthy wet ride, my bike isn’t covered in that shitty aluminium / grit paste that is ground off the braking surface of aluminium rims.

Carbon rims for all conditions. Put your aluminium hoops in the bin. Now.

….Aaaaand; GO.

What is it with the fucking thrones? Its a worse trend than baseball caps on the podium.

I’m telling you, after Sky/Wiggins dominated last year they have become the model to follow it seems.  First the TT-winning fist pump, now a throne.  I was surprised by the distinct lack of sideburns throughout the peloton, even on the Modfather.  Perhaps that explains his poor performance?  Contador is taking some races off to grow his out before the TdF no doubt.

Even when the tech is to make stuff lighter, the tech has to be slowed down by 70 grams here;

I read somewhere a while a go that the UCI regulations on minimum weight was there to make sure the bikes are of solid, ‘safe’ build. The above pic throws out that theory.

This whole electric it’s good/ bad reminds me of clipless vs. toe clips and straps. I loved old school pedals and straps but I would never go back (maybe on the track?). I ride an old Bianchi with down tube shifters and she’s just fine for all my regular needs. Last summer I demo-ed a Felt with electronic shifting and as expected the shifting was awesome! But more awesome was the 6 1/2 kilos of felt vs my 9 1/2 kilo 30 year old.

Bottom line when all this stuff costs less than a used car or I get sponsored by Viagra to ride the masters worlds I am happy to lug along and watch the Felts and Storcks from the back of the pace line.

I use rain blocks and they are great; my carbon rims brake better in all circumstances than alu, but they go after brake pads like a fat guy at an all-you-can-eat buffet.

I’m still working on moving all the bikes to 10-s. Then I’ll have to take it to 11 before I even consider electronic. Thus, I have plenty of time for the engineers and everyone else to continue riding it before I even need to think about trying out an electronic Gruppo.

I cant imagine going to 11 spd as it is bad enough wearing out the 10 spd chain every 1500km !

+1. Visiting the mountains of Gran Canaria this summer and hiring a bike, Cannondale, 10 speed mechanical shifting. However. I do intend to hire a Di2 dura ace equipped machine for a couple days just to see what all the fuss on electronic shifting is. Can’t see me buying it anytime soon though, wife and kids to feed and clothe and its no gonna make me any faster than some real training would. No question its seen as Gucci kit, there’s plenty of that in the sport but that’s primarily the domain of those with plenty of free cash. Jury out til jury wins the lotto.

Honestly, choosing wheels is like choosing the character for your bike that day…I love being able to swap between machines. For that reason alone, I’ll be buying up as much 10spd Campa as I can manage just to resist the investment of buying 11spd for all those bikes.

Besides, having ridden Mektronic killed my love of electronic shifting, though I’m given to understand Mavic Zap! was pretty good. Mektronic made  me vow to always keep a cable between my hand and my rear mech.

You are doing something terribly wrong, newer chains last a lot longer than the old ones.

Dunno – our roads are covered in a sort of grinding paste that gets everywhere especially in the wet – 1500kms is not far off my average and I’m cleaning the damn thing constantly. It could be the wattage from our mighty guns causing the chains to wimp out of course…

I dont think I am doing anything ‘terribly wrong’ at all. I just ride the bike at a decent pace and check the chain stretch. When it hits ‘1’ I change the damn thing, otherwise I woill wear out all the other more expensive bits. 1500km seems to be the average figure before I need to really monitor things and think about swapping it out. As @The Engine says, our roads are shite and our weather is generally shitier, and we have a lot of hills. PM is the way to go.

Funny how when people give an opinion around here, and don’t like getting criticism back, it’s like the end of the world. Personally, I could give a fuck wether Elect works better than Mech systems. As someone above stated, it adds $1000 (at least) to the price. Pushing a button, vs flexing my wrist 4 inches doesn’t seem worth the $$. And while they may shift perfect every time, again, 45seconds at the rear barrel adjuster, once after the cables stretch, seems like no big thing to me. I’ve test driven Di2, and it’s nice, but I like the feel of mech shifters.

I am a fan of both – but given the choice today it’s mech because I prefer the sensations – I prefer the look of mech set up; I prefer the feel of mech shifting – the visceral tactility and connectedness of a confident mech shift; and as important the sound : I find the high pitched whine of elec front derailleur disconcerting – much prefer the satisfying thunk engagement of mech shift.

Its all about personal preference and we are splitting 1st world hairs over this – but elec does de-sensitise the bike another degree like carbon over steel anaethetises the road just that little bit more than I like.

But really – what a problem to have. Poor us.

I think you need to get a grip and have a word with yourself. As far as for the self opinionated morons you are in disagreement with, as far as I can see, none of them run this site.  They just come for entertainment same as me and you.    Self opinionated is redundant by the way.

@ChrisO I’ve been using di2 for about 8 months. 100% reliable and the comparison of time needed to be spent on maintenance compared to mechanical is stark. Apart from a monthly recharge, done more as precaution than need, there is zero necessity to tune etc so the gears work perfect every time, reaffirming Velominati rule of silence.

The only thing I’ve noticed is that after training on it for 8 months on rides requiring little gear changes; when I raced at Port Macquarie recently on a hilly course requiring numerous gear changes I woke up the next day with a sore wrist! The di2 has made changing gears so easy my formerly muscular wrist area had withered into an insipid lacklustre tool.

Here, in my opinion are two great reasons to not go the electric route.  The second reason speaks for itself. Who wants limp wrists?  The first, well the only thing I like about cycling more than riding my bike and spending time in my lbs looking at shiney new stuff or awesome kit is being out in my gagrage and cleaning and tinkering and tuning my bike. Usually with a decent beverage. If I didn’t have to tune it what would I do? I get a real sense of satisfaction out on the road when the bike is silent and shifts perfectly…I made it do that.

Actually there’s a good third reason and that’s that elecy will make you a poorer rider surely?  I know enough people who already wait too long to shift gear on a climb…crucn crunch ping…know what I mean?  From what I understand on di2 etc you can change under load any time you like.  It’s like using super wide super side cut skis. Any fool can do it, Where’s the skill or art in that?  

I’m sticking with my Sram red 10s now but my next build will be campy super record 11s mechanical and I look forward to lots of hours tuning it and giving it love and attetnion.

I’m still working on moving all the bikes to 10-s. Then I’ll have to take it to 11 before I even consider electronic. Thus, I have plenty of time for the engineers and everyone else to continue riding it before I even need to think about trying out an electronic Gruppo.

I cant imagine going to 11 spd as it is bad enough wearing out the 10 spd chain every 1500km !

You are doing something terribly wrong, newer chains last a lot longer than the old ones.

Where are you riding in GC?

The climb up from Mogan to 2/3 way up is one of the best climbs anywhere – bit shitty on up to the top of the mountain after that, but glorious up to that point, and what a descent! 10/10 – mind you, it’s in a sheltered gully, so make sure you have plenty of water and and ice maker on your top tube, coz it’s gonna be frikking hot in the summer

+1. Visiting the mountains of Gran Canaria this summer and hiring a bike, Cannondale, 10 speed mechanical shifting. However. I do intend to hire a Di2 dura ace equipped machine for a couple days just to see what all the fuss on electronic shifting is. Can’t see me buying it anytime soon though, wife and kids to feed and clothe and its no gonna make me any faster than some real training would. No question its seen as Gucci kit, there’s plenty of that in the sport but that’s primarily the domain of those with plenty of free cash. Jury out til jury wins the lotto.

Funny how when people give an opinion around here, and don’t like getting criticism back, it’s like the end of the world. Personally, I could give a fuck wether Elect works better than Mech systems. As someone above stated, it adds $1000 (at least) to the price. Pushing a button, vs flexing my wrist 4 inches doesn’t seem worth the $$. And while they may shift perfect every time, again, 45seconds at the rear barrel adjuster, once after the cables stretch, seems like no big thing to me. I’ve test driven Di2, and it’s nice, but I like the feel of mech shifters.

The pink jersey fitted me very well when I wore it for a day at the start – as you know I’m a prologue specialist and no good in the mountains although I Climb Well For My Weight.

@ChrisO I’ve been using di2 for about 8 months. 100% reliable and the comparison of time needed to be spent on maintenance compared to mechanical is stark. Apart from a monthly recharge, done more as precaution than need, there is zero necessity to tune etc so the gears work perfect every time, reaffirming Velominati rule of silence.

The only thing I’ve noticed is that after training on it for 8 months on rides requiring little gear changes; when I raced at Port Macquarie recently on a hilly course requiring numerous gear changes I woke up the next day with a sore wrist! The di2 has made changing gears so easy my formerly muscular wrist area had withered into an insipid lacklustre tool.

You got to be careful……that limp wrist could get you in all sorts of trouble……(cue semicolon, cloe brackets! )

Not so sure about Minion though.
