The Velominati have our own set of nicknames and terms which have developed over time through posts and correspondence. Some of these are names of landmarks or terms in cycling; others are nicknames for some of the riders in the pro peloton. While not intended to be offensive or derogatory, the nicknames in the list represent the riders’ personalities or their reputations; usually little more than a play on words, these are intended to be a bit of fun in the sometimes too-serious world of cycling.
It goes without saying that names such as The Cannibal, The Badger, Mr. Paris-Roubaix, Der Kaiser and Il Pirata are taken as read, and should be well enough recognised by any Velominatus to warrant their non-inclusion in this list.

There is a pre-determined Coefficient of Difficulty for each Velominatus on each ride. Velominati are capable of registering their training regimen by a CoD being no less than V and working towards an intensity of VV. The three Coefficients of Difficulty are V, V.V and VV. Thanks to @unversio.
Just as the Illuminati would stage their fabled, and somewhat feared Cabals, the Velominati stage our own modern-day versions, the Cogals. A meeting of like-minded misfits brought together by the promise of beer, preceded by a bike ride. A Cogal distinguishes itself from other group rides by the following criteria. First, Cogals are organized and supported through Velominati, though not necessarily a Keeper (legally speaking, however, we have no involvement, so if you crash or die, it’s your own problem. Second, a Cogal is a day-long undertaking that focuses 100% on the bike. The rides are categorized (Casually Deliberate, Rule 5, Rule 10, for example) but are long. This is what you’re doing today, nothing else; see Rule 4. Third, Cogals always include a session of Malted Recovery Beverage Consumption after the ride. Whenever possible, it should also include a pre-ride espresso.
We don’t strictly endorse their interpretation, but like the Catholics and Opus Dei, we recognize them as part of our own.

Just look down, ruminate briefly on the message conveyed to your oxygen-starved brain and lactate-laden legs, and V the fuck outa there. What’s the gradient of the climb? V. How fast are you going? V. What’s your heart rate doing? Your V-max? You will instantly and unequivocally know the answer.
A rider’s ability to channel The V is directly proportional to their V-Receptacle count. There are several known ways to increase one’s count, among them continued mediation on The V, Training Properly, consumption of Post-Ride Recovery Ales, and adherence to Rule 2 and Rule 3.
This is typically not due to any reduction in passion, due to outide factors that should be banished, like friends, family, or work.

I failed to take my prescribed allergy stuff this morning””thinking the season past the pollen allergies (wrong!). I suspect it puts me on the wrong side of the UCI drug monitoring (it’s a steroid), but I invoke the Boonen Clause: I have to spray it up my nose. So I’ve decided it’s okay.

I know everyone is different but I found a great allergy med, I wonder if you’ve heard of it. In season without it my nose runs like a tap, I get 20 to 40 sneezes in a row and my eyes get really itchy, but I never touch them, that makes them worse.
The med is called Opticrom, it’s an eye drop, and a drop in each eye every couple of hours totally stops any symptoms whatsoever. It may be a product you can’t get in the US but the active ingredient is Sodium Cromoglicate. It costs £4.95 per season! If you try it, let me know how you get on. Good luck.

I might add, I use a compact myself, one day I’ll get a real BIG RING.
FYI, climbing a hill on a 50×17 is more Rule V than climbing it on a 53×18. I trust this assists your understanding of the issue.
Um Ok, it doesn’t have to be a term of derision. Someone else said something about not using “Sur la plaque” if you were running a compact, I was just responding to that.

Honestly the compact vs. standard big ring argument is simply silly.

This is gear inches with a 170mm crank, 700 x 23 tires, with the 50 tooth on the left, 53 tooth on the right, a standard 11 to 23 rear cassette.
You loose one high speed cog and gain one climbing cog.
Here’s the effective speed at 90rpm with all things the same as above:

It’s effectively not a huge loss at top end. I rarely find myself searching for more gear inches, I don’t sprint that fast and there’s no need to kill yourself on the descents. If you apply enough rule #5 going up then you’ll be focusing on recovering and choosing good lines on the way down.

I’ve honestly considered getting a compact… because Singapore is so flat. Oddly, I find I like to be in the big ring (psychologically, maybe, it just feels better) and this means that I only really use about half of my 11-25 cassette. I’m not able to cruise alone at over 40 for any real distance so, looking at your chart, I just don’t use the last 4 cogs on a normal solo ride (yes, I know the chart is for a 11-23). There’s seldom any reason to shift chainrings (alright, no reason I have encountered thus far).
I think I’d just have the same issue if I exclusively used the 39 at the front, but with the cog-use shifted down the cluster (ie, I’d never use the bigger ones).
Hmmmm… Dura Ace compact with a straight-block cassette? Maybe time to crunch some numbers.

Totally agree KC, to which I would add my belief that many (maybe most) people running standard front rings go with 12-25 not 11-23 so they have a smaller top gear and one more gap.

Yes a good day, a new beginning, when my devoted wife whom endures my endless hours on the bike, my retelling (overused) epic stories, maintaining my machine in my half of the kitchen, and stocking my approved groceries — bestows upon me a loving nickname. When I heard it there was total delight! I must have merited the name by conditioning her thru example. Always very dutiful to maintain and upgrade parts, wiping off the machine after most rides, donned a 3T cap under my helmet all winter (any day below 49ËšF) — and today she ultimately calls me “3T”. Perhaps referring to my “ULTIMATE PERFORMANCE” (ba-duh-BING) !!
VOU – Velominati Obsessive Unit – that “little extra” that you must do after the tape measure, calipers, and electron microscope are exhausted. Can be any type of measurement (angle of tape wrap, torque of screw, alignment of seat) but if you are rechecking an adjustment yet again, you can be certain you are in search of a VOU.

The VOU will come into play once you switch the stem out. Damn, it doesn’t seem to be within a VOU of alignment with the front wheel. Are those handlebars rotated one VOU degree too far? Add your personal “exact” adjustment here, but that is part of the fun, right?
Meaning that a VOU adjustment is not counted until it is adjusted perfectly ??

I was thinking more that a VOU adjustment isn’t finished until adjusted “perfectly”. It is the extremely minor adjustments that non-Velominati (Velominots?) wouldn’t even notice but that make all the difference.
