Velominati Super Prestige: Women’s Elite Road Race 2013

The Azzura previews the course.
The Azzura previews the course.

Where: Montecatini Terme to Firenze, Italy

When: September 28

How: 140 km including 5 climbing laps in Firenze.

It will most likely be gruppo compatto all the way to Firenze. The bombs start going off on the first of five climbing circuits. The strongest will stay near the front, with each circuit the pretenders will fall away. Sprinters and time trialists should stay at home. What should be left are the cunning, strong and a good descender or two. The finish is after the descent of the 5th climbing circuit so a regrouping of the last hard women could happen. Or not, it could unfold in a completely different way. I can’t help you. The start list can help you. And to add some confusion, here is another start list link. Lady luck or a sacrifice to the correct god may help you. I lament the lack of a ladies Vuelta so we would really know who was going to be there in the end.

If teamwork is helpful here, Australia and Italy have the largest squads. This course should produce an exciting race so find a good streaming video or stand on the side of the road in Firenze and shout your brains out. Bon chance to all.

Cheers, shame this year hasn’t quite worked out for her after such a big result in last year’s race. Got to spend some time riding with her here in Adelaide over summer, awesome lady.

@Mikael Liddy You have a proper crush on her Mikael. Its OK. I understand. I had coffee with Ine Beyen in Belgium and I’m still trying getting over it…

Guilty as charged, how are the ‘coffee-with-pros’ opportunities in Egypt?

You’re messing with me right? The coffee took a couple of weeks to source – black as coal, hot as fire, sweet as honey. Road riding is close to suicidal except on Friday mornings (prayer day) but there’s a decent bunch who are dedicated and keep a solid pace. I’m yet to go with them because I got fat and weak waiting for my bike to ship. Working on that.

The redeeming feature is world class mountain biking 15 mins away. And I can fly to Europe for a weekend in the Alps…

Egypt squire? Wow, that’s different. North African cycling, you are brave, I guess. I have no notion of it but if you can get a cheap flight across the Med and ride, that is not bad.
