200 on 100

Vermont is spelled with a capital “V”, surely no coincidence. With the loads of mountains and climbs available, it had to start with a “V”. I mean, if it was mountainous enough to draw a runaway “loose” nun who left the church for a sailor, it must be good, right? (Great nordic skiing there””Trapp Family Lodge, if you are there in the winter months as well).

Anyways, being a seventh generation “V”ermonter myself, who was raised on a family farm on Rogers’ Hill in West Newbury, VT (which was hand cleared and settled in 1763 by my G-G-G-G-G-Grandfather and still owned by my father) I have a deep love and feel for VT, liberal politics notwithstanding. So when I heard about the 200 on 100 “Dumptruck of Awesome” that was available, I just knew that I had to do it. And not only that, I knew that I had to share this beautiful “Ode to the V in Vermont” with all of my best cyber-cycling-soul mates. Okay, soul mates might be going a bit far there, but you get my meaning.

So, enough with the intro.

Break out the rollers, get on the trainers, find your winter gear; lay off the seconds, nurse that one glass of booze, hold the toasting to one drink, dodge Cupid’s chocolates and shoot the Easter Bunny because training for this bastard started yesterday and you’ll be paying for it on the 28th of June, 2012 in spades!

See you in the pre-dawn hours on the Canadian border with our eyes firmly fixed on the prize of the Massachusetts border. Let’s drive this dump truck like Mel Gibson leaving the compound in a post-apocalyptic world, baby!

90k this morning in under three hours. Humidex was at 41 when I got home. This at 75% sinus capacity. Ask me if I’m ready for Vermont. Dare ya!

Hollow eyes, hollow cheeks. You are Schleckian in your readiness. Weight-wise – not phychologically-wise. I hope.

    You look badass.

  2. @Steampunk  this is an example of the transformation that the V transfuses into even a humble academic! I remember an image of you in some club kit from a year ago and you looked puffy and anemic…

Take note @all you too could become this if you doned the sacred Vestments and maned up for a cogal!

    Don’t Fuck With This Canuck.

I had no idea an academic could look so fierce.

Just you try & hand in that assignment late!!!

Any issue with manning up for a cogal and then donning the sacred Vestments? Will the size I ordered pre-cogal be all wrong?

  5. @mcsqueak

Seriously, I’ve very much enjoyed following this thread as you guys have all prepped for this ride. I can’t wait to read how it goes.

I feel like a kid a Christmas right now! Over the next 8 days, it’s going to be EVEN MORE about the bike:

My cycling sensei is on his way down from Ottawa as we speak, a package from realcyclist should be delivered today (including lights for VT–just in case), and vacation starts tomorrow. Will be on the bike everyday except Tuesday between now and June 28: 60km on Thursday (taking my sensei on a training ride from my grasshopper days), 25km on Friday, 165km on Saturday (Savage Century–too close to the cogal, but too late to back out of this one). The focus will then be on rest and recovery with recovery rides on Sunday and Monday, drive to Vermont on Tuesday, light spin on Wednesday morning, ride the big yellow bus full of awesome  Wednesday afternoon, and cogal on Thursday!

  7. Longest day/shortest night, new moon and eight days to go!

Great group – Check (thanks Velominati)

Transport in style – Check (huge thanks to Rogggger)

Housing – Check (ok, one end is sketchy but were only in it for maybe 6 hours and it’s not like there were choices, actually our hosts sound terrific, it’s just that the VMH heard that it was a dorm and….)

Sag – Check (thanks to the Canadian contingent and M.J. From Boston – Huge!)

Route – Check (kudos to Vermont the most sensible state in the Union)

This has all the signs of being epically awesome or at the very least epically interesting, never to be forgotten and hours of B.S. stories for the grandchildren!

  8. Okay, update from VT.  Arrived from France a few days ago.  Now 10 days post P-R and felt sore for a week but now my right knee is KILLING me.  It did not hurt for the first few days postride, at least compared to everything else, but now it is killer.  Besides my hands still aching, that is all that hurts.  Still PRAYING to Merckx that it stops hurting soon!

As for pick up ride: Is the bus going up Rt 7 or the interstate to Burlington?  I can get to either route easily.

    Thanks! Buck.

You’ve got a Cipo look going.  I’m calling you Lion King from now on.

  10. @Buck Rogers Oh shit.  I don’t think there will be any testing at the 200/100.  Prescribe yourself cortizone–as much as you can handle.  You can have surgery to correct any damage AFTER the ride.  This is THAT important.  Totally worth a two-year ban.

  11. @Buck Rogers

    Bummer dude!

Triple check that seat height. The only benefit i can say about the isp on my wilier is that that variable has been eliminated.

  12. @Buck Rogers

PR was not going to let your body forget about her in 10 days time.  The sore knee is more a blessing than a curse. At least that’s what I’d tell myself.

  13. @roger

Yeah, you’re most likely right.  I will give it a test ride this weekend and see how she does.  Also, I will meet you up in Burlington if that is okay.

JiPM:  Man, if I knew a local orthopod I would have a shot in a second but I am not at my hospital so I am out of luck on that account.  But, don’t get me wrong, I am planning on riding this puppy and hopefully with another six days of rest, it’ll come around!

A collective 6 US states, 2 Canadian provinces, and a man from the future who calls everywhere home will be representing the V in a weeks time.  It’s been a great lead-up and one I likely will never forget.  Thank you all for making this a reality, and thank you @frank for giving us this forum.

    @Buck Rogers

I wish you all the best in getting that knee in order.  A few emails back, we’ve decided for the Burlington contingent to meet around 1500-1515 at the EMS in South Burlington, right across from the mall and I believe there is also a PlayItAgain sports in that plaza and a book store.  If you’re leaving a car, perhaps there is a better place to park the car and meet up with one of the others, so you don’t return to a towed car on Friday.

  15. @roger

Man!  There is NO ONE from VT or Ted King’s home state of NH on this ride???  Perhaps they know something that we do not?

Thanks Roger for the advice.  I know the meeting place and my VMH will drop me off so not to worry.  Thanks again!

  16. @Buck Rogers

It’s okay, mate: I’ve got you covered. I’ll bring down cheap drugs from Canada. Failing that, I’ll fix the glare on your knee and scare it into submission. Looking forward to comparing the glare above with the 1000-mile vacant stare at the end of this thing.

  17. @Steampunk

Ha!  Perfect.  That IS one killer stare!

I have been trying to get a hold of Floyd or Tyler for some of that Clear stuff but they haven’t been answering my calls.  Maybe Lance could help me out?  Lance, if you are reading this, please contact Frank for my number if you would, I really  could use some help.

  18. @roger Don’t forget Brian from NY (Rob and Tim’s neighborhood) who is preparing for a DOUBLE Ironman and will be pulling us all.

His advice, if I recall correctly, is don’t worry about a thing and eat a lot.

  19. @Buck Rogers

Never realized that until you mentioned it.  Perhaps they all have their senses about them.

    @xyxax

I think that’s 04 Spags.  Unless we have two Brian’s.  After reading about the Brian from @nate and @sgt Cogal, I would imagine there has to be a theme of crazy strong cyclists all named Brian.

  20. @xyxax

    oops, ID-10T error..

Mien gott em Heimmel, Rob looks fantastic! Shaved up and kitted out. His socks are perfect. And the ride? Steel is real, chrome fork. Nice. And young Tim looks like a good person to draft. You bastids are going to kill this ride.

  21. Hey, Gianni, you old dog, you. Yeah, he is kinda cute. And I know he appreciates y.oU noticing his spiffy white socks. ;)

    The Wife

  22. roger – Ha, Tobias! Somehow I had never watched any of that show until about two weeks ago. A cycling pal suggested it and I’m officially hooked. Love how much craziness goes on in each episode. I’ve seen David Cross live, awesome at stand-up, great as a Never Nude!

This is coming on fast! Leaving this weekend on the honeymoon. Heading to eastern Canada from NC. I should get a V-flag sewn up so I can fly it from the car should we see you HardMen out there!

    Good luck, lads.

  23. Ron, as great as the Cogal will be, nothing is more memorable or wonderful than your recent marriage and honeymoon to be.  A sincere congratulations to both of you!

In the spirit, I wish you many many years of, well…

Still working on rides from the finish but I am pretty sure that I will have something lined up either going to North Ferrisberg, VT (mid-way up the West side of the state) or the Newbury, VT area (mid-way up the East side of the state).

North Ferrisberg, VT is pretty much on the way back to Burlington so we should be able to give your a ride there if needed. I will have a spare bike carrier on the car.

Quick check, and it’s okay if you cannot, but can you accomadate two of us? Myself and another rider are returning to my place in North Ferrisburgh, right off of Rt 7, after the ride and the first possible return ride plan for us has fallen through. I still have other options but curious as to how much room you have. Thanks!

FML!!! Steamy, my minivan in VT is DEAD!  That was our return vehicle.  I am working on other options right now.  Canuck, were you returning with Steamy and me as well?  Just trying to see how large a vehicle we need.

    Thanks!

  25. Hey fellas, I know short notice can raise the stress meter, so if you’re not able to get a ride back north, I’d be more than happy to bring you up Thursday after I finish the ride and shower up and enjoy a drink or two.

Itd be the cargo sag van, so you’d hve to be creative to get comfy.

I’d be more than happy to so if it helps, let me know!

Surely I can’t be the first to see a resemblance…

I particularly like the line: “It won’t be Paris-Roubaix, but neither is it Oprah on a hybrid.”

  28. @xyxax I thought the tacit acknowledgement of the inevitable suffering was pretty good too:

“We would like you to wear a helmet, because we think you are valuable and don’t want you to get hurt, unnecessarily”

Are you serious???   Are you already returning that night up North?  I am game for it.  First Steamy’s minion’s abondoned us, then Canuck’s VMH, now my minivan.  Seems like we are cursed.  CRAZY!

I am off for my first ride in two weeks now.  Knee still killing me walking stairs but hopefully pedaling will not e too much of an issue.

Hell, that’s apropos.  Still praying to Merckx for my knee, will have an update in a few hours, although my internet connection is really sketchy here at camp.

  31. @Buck Rogers

We need you Buck.  Put some lidocaine eye drops on that shit.

    @ten B

“Don’t worry. We’ll be water-boarding you with impurity-free fresh spring water.”

  32. @Buck Rogers

I’ve not any business up north after getting to north adams. i live in boston.  that being said, you fools will need a ride, and since i don’t sleep much to begin with, i’ll definitely help out and give you 3 a lift back up.  i’ll bring the ipod.  hope you dont mind 3 hours of rick astely’s never gonna give you up

  34. Hey y’all

I just tried the Allen Lims rice cakes and they are fantastic!!! Sticky rice with bacon, egg , some braggs aminos, and brown sugar . They pack easily , digest well while riding and taste great! I’ll make as many as I can tues. nt and wed am. If any of you would like the recipe it’s on the velonews website. The more the merrier I’ve ordered the Martha wrap from amazon for easy access while riding. I’ll bring the wrap if you’ve made some and would like to portion out your cakes.

Anyway weather looks perfect, the group is psyched, the bike is in good nick. We’ve got some ass kickin riding coming up folks!! Can’t wait!!!
